"A proposal to create a federal grants to help teachers educate students about climate change was defeated by a margin of 53 to 44 in the Senate on Wednesday, after one prominent Republican raised the specter of a “President Trump.”

During debate over legislation to replace No Child Left Behind, the country’s main K-12 education law, Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) proposed a competitive grant program for public schools that want federal dollars to help teach about climate change.

“The children of our country deserve the best scientific education they can get on this topic,” Markey said. “They are the future leaders of this country and the world. They must be equipped.”

But Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), co-author of the main bill to replace No Child Left Behind, said the proposal smacked of federal interference, and any program about climate science education would be vulnerable to shifting politics.

“If you like Washington D.C. getting involved in Common Core in your state, you’re going to love this amendment, because it gets the federal government involved in creating a curriculum for climate change,” said Alexander, who argued for his colleagues to vote it down.

“As soon as we authorize, it’ll begin to write regulations defining what we mean by climate change,” Alexander said, referring to the federal department of education. “And we would have to change textbooks in 100,000 public schools every time we have a presidential election.

Just imagine what the curriculum on climate change would be if we shifted from President Obama to President Cruz and then back to President Sanders and then to President Trump,” he added.

Minutes later, Markey’s amendment went down in defeat.
