High incidence of Islamists raping Norwegian girls and women, scholar says is women's fault, must consider culture

.
Rapist says 'his religion' allows him to rape. "Norwegian women must take their share of responsibility for these rapes" because Muslim men found their manner of dress provocative."...(paragraph 10, "Asking for it," Mark Steyn)

6/23/11, "Police Report: All Assault Rapists in Oslo Follow Muhammad," Arutz Sheva (Israel National News), Gil Ronen

"Defenders of Islam call it a "religion of peace" but many Norwegian women are learning that Islam is the religion of rape. According to an amazing (Oslo) police report released there this month, every single solved case of assault-rape (rape preceded by assault) in the country in 2010 was carried out by a Muslim immigrant.

The report was cited by an official Norwegian television station, which interviewed a victim who said that her
  • rapist explained to her that his religion permits him to rape her.
According to the police report there was a total of 186 of known rape cases in 2010. These fall into various categories, the largest one of which is assault-rape, carried out by sheer physical force, of which there were 86 cases. In 83 of these cases the perpetrator could be identified by the victim. In all 83, the attacker was described as having "non-western appearance," a laundered euphemism for Muslim immigrants from Africa, the Middle East, or Asia....

(Note: the translation of the Norwegian TV report embedded here does not make a distinction between "assault rape" and other forms of rape, and appears to confuse the statistics for 2010 with those for 2006-2010).

A female police officer who commented on the report explained that “Many of the perpetrators who commit these rapes are on the edge of society often unemployed, arriving from traumatized countries. In the past five years it has often been asylum seekers.”..."...
  • (Meaning you must understand their feelings. ed.)
(continuing, Arutz Sheva): "A report in Aftenposten in 2001 said: “While 65% of those charged with rape are classed as coming from a non-western background, this segment makes up only 14.3% of Oslo's population. Norwegian women were the victims in 80 percent of the cases.”

“In other words,” says the New American, “Muslims from Africa and other benighted Third World places are targeting Western women for rape.” It elaborates:
“In 2005, the blogger Fjordman reported on a similar rape wave in Sweden. A crime prevention study that year reported that Algerians, Libyans, Moroccans, and Tunisians ‘dominate the group of rape suspects,’ he reported. The same year, the newspaper Aftonbladet reported that nearly half of all rapists were immigrants.”
Yehuda Bello, an Israeli blogger who is well-acquainted with Norwegian culture, noted the report and claimed that Norwegians are a culture that suffers from “extreme boredom” due to the presence of huge oil reserves, and are thus inordinately interested in multiculturalism and assorted “human rights” campaigns."...via Gateway Pundit

"According violence researcher Ragnhild Bjørnebekk the Police Academy in Oslo (Norway), gang rape has historically been very rare in Norway and in Scandinavia , but has increased as a phenomenon since 1997. When several are together on the rape, the violence is often more serious:

- The people applaud each other and communicate in a way that violence can be rougher. You are doing each other up, and in some contexts it can end in murder, she says.

Assaults and rapes are often planned, although the idea of making it can be impulsive, and people who rape have a cynical attitude towards women.

- They see rape as exciting, and perceive it as wrong in relation to themselves, says the researcher....

At the same time says the report from the Oslo police that the figures for 2010 show that 19.7% of the rapists [including domestic rape, date rape and assault rape] came from Africa, 15.1% from the Middle East and 14.1% from Asia. Since the Middle East, partly located in Africa and partly in Asia, it means that 48.9% of rapes had perpetrator of one of these two continents.

17.4% of the population is thus for 48.9% of rapes, which is a huge over-representation: The rape rate is between four and five times greater in the group of people from Africa and Asia than in the general population.

Right Psychiatrist Michael Setsaas ideas are not alone in believing that cultural differences may explain the non-western men are overrepresented on rape statistics:

In 2009 launched the Immigration Directorate (UDI), a new project where young asylum seekers to learn about Norwegian women and the Western view of sexuality through education film "My body". Immigration took the initiative to make the film, which will help young asylum seekers of women , sexuality and contraception. The reason for the UDI's action was the Oslo police report showed that asylum seekers were over-represented in terms of particular assault rape....

Jan Opsal at Mission College in Stavanger, with sharp criticism of how asylum seekers will be introduced to the Norwegian society. Also Opsal is of the opinion that the extreme over-representation in part due to cultural background and of women:

- The entire reception apparatus and reception centers must take more seriously to give asylum seekers coming to Norway better introductory course on the Norwegian society and how the Norwegian women ter, says Opsal to NRK....

- The goal must be that asylum seekers are learning to tell the difference between the sexes tradition they come from and who they will. They must learn that Norwegian women are no worse than Muslim women are fair game, even if they behave differently than they are accustomed to, said Opsal.

Religious Researcher January Opsal explains Muslim men's views on women in this way.

- Women who are married belong to his childhood home until she finds a husband, and will not usually travel alone in public. The woman must protect her honor with a view to a future marriage. She breaks these limits, it means that she also breaks his own respect, and thus also their right to keep the boundaries around themselves, explains Opsal.

Opsal said that a Muslim from the Islamic ethics is not entitled to assaults against a woman, but when this occurs has religion scholar this explanation.

- A lone Muslim asylum seeker coming from a society with strict restrictions on how women ready themselves and walk in the public space, will interpret the behavior of Norwegian women as an invitation to try out. When he is rejected, this may be the result of frustration and anger, says religion researcher in January Opsal.

Opsal and Setsaas supported by a police sergeant and a specialist in Opsal and Setsaas supported by a police sergeant and a specialist in investigations of sexual abuse, Tor Erik Riska Thorsen Rogaland Police District, which also states that non-Western men's over representation in terms of rape due to background in cultures of ancient women and little openness about sexuality."...

There's also an economist at the University of Michigan who has studied diversity and decision making and has found that at every business decision, diversity leads to better decisions. In other words, a group of all white men are not gonna reach the best decisions. There's something about a group of men and testosterone, you know, making risky decisions that's very real. Attorney explains 14 factual errors in Time Magazine cover story about the Constitution

.
6/29/11, "Fourteen Clear Factual Errors in Richard Stengel’s Essay on the Constitution (And I Am Looking for Your Help)," (And I Am Looking for Your Help)" Big Journalism, Aaron Worthing

"On June 23, 2011, Time Magazine published an essay entitled “One Document, Under Siege” (one page version, here) by Richard Stengel. I consider the publication of this article to be nothing less than a scandal. Besides the deep philosophical disagreements I have with Mr. Stengel, the piece simply fails as journalism. As I will demonstrate in this post, there were fourteen objectively verifiable errors in Mr. Stengel’s piece, piece, half of which could have been discovered simply by reading the Constitution itself.

I will lay out all of the false claims and evidence in a moment, but let me preview the most egregious error in the article, when Mr. Stengel wrote this:

If the Constitution was intended to limit the federal government, it sure doesn’t say so.

As one commenter wrote: “I had to read it twice to believe my eyes. Time really did say this.” And while I will prove definitively in a moment that he is wrong, I suspect every single person reading this knows it already.

The fact that this and thirteen other egregious errors appeared in Time at all is bad enough. But further, it was a cover story....So I will present to you fourteen clear errors Mr. Stengel has made in his article, starting with the most egregious errors. Here are the fourteen errors, in short:

  1. 1. The Constitution does not limit the federal government.
  2. 2. The Constitution is not law.
  3. 3. The Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment emancipated the slaves.
  4. 4. The Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment granted the right to vote to African Americans.
  5. 5. The original Constitution declared that black people were to be counted as three-fifths of a person.
  6. 6. That the original, unamended Constitution prohibited women from voting.
  7. 7. The Commerce Clause grants Congress the power to tax individuals based on whether they buy a product or service.
  8. 8. Inter arma enim silent leges translates as “in time of war, the Constitution is silent.”
  9. 9. The War Powers Act allows the president to unilaterally wage war for sixty days.
  10. 10. We have only declared war five times.
  11. 11. Alexander Hamilton wanted a king for America.
  12. 12. Social Security is a debt within the meaning of Section Four of the Fourteenth Amendment.
  13. 13. Naturalization depends on your birth.
  14. 14. The ObamaCare mandate is a tax.
It is also scandalous because of who wrote the piece. The author is not only the Managing Editor for Time, but he spent two years as President and CEO of the National Constitution Center. And even today, he works with the National Constitution Center’s Peter Jennings Project for Journalists and the Constitution, whose stated mission is “to help both professional journalists and students interested in journalism understand constitutional issues more deeply.” That is right. He is there to help journalists understand the Constitution better....

"Here, point-by-point, is proof that each one of those claims are incorrect.

False Claim #1: The Constitution does not limit the Federal Government."...

(The author explains each of the 14 errors).

ATF whistleblower fired by Obama admin. accused of having BO

.
"The termination letter also notes there were complaints about his smoking and “even your hygiene.”...

6/27/11, "'Project Gunrunner' Whistleblower Says ATF Sent Him Termination Notice," Fox News, Maxim Lott

"The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is being accused of retaliating against an agent who helped publicize the agency’s role in allowing thousands of guns to cross the U.S. border and fall into the hands of Mexican drug gangs.

The agent, Vince Cefalu, who has spoken out about the ATF's so-called "Project Gunrunner" scandal, says he was served with termination papers just last week, and he calls the move politically motivated....

Cefalu first told FoxNews.com about the ATF’s embattled anti-gun smuggling operation in December, before the first reports on the story appeared in February. “Simply put, we knowingly let hundreds of guns

Since then, Cefalu’s claims have been vindicated, as a number of agents with first-hand knowledge of the case came forward. The scandal over Project Gunrunner led to congressional hearings, a presidential reprimand – Obama called the operation “a serious mistake” – and speculation that ATF chief Ken Melson will resign.

Yet last week, Cefalu, who has worked for the agency for 24 years, was forced to turn in his gun and badge. He can appeal but will be on “paid administrative leave” during the process.

Cefalu’s dismissal follows a string of allegations that the ATF retaliates against whistleblowers. When the Project Gunrunner scandal broke, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, wrote the ATF that an agent who had been giving his staff members information about the scandal had been

  • "allegedly accused... of misconduct" by the agent’s boss for talking with Grassley’s staffers....

ATF spokesman Drew Wade denied in a statement to FoxNews.com that the bureau is retaliating, but he declined to comment about Cefalu's case. “ATF will not comment on specific, ongoing personnel matters. It is illegal to use disciplinary actions to retaliate against employees, and ATF does not engage in such improper reprisals.”

The ATF's termination letter to Cefalu, obtained by FoxNews.com, makes no mention of Cefalu’s role in the latest scandal.

You think they would just come out and say that?” Cefalu said.

The letter instead says that Cefalu should be fired because he leaked documents on a website he helped create, CleanupATF.org, and showed a “lack of candor” on past projects, in particular a 2005 operation that Cefalu led. Cefalu admits he made information about the case public but says he did so

In the 2005 case, local police wanted to wiretap a suspect to gather evidence, but Cefalu objected, saying it would be illegal to use wiretaps until all other options for gathering evidence had been tried.

Cefalu was then removed from the case. But he continued to speak out and file internal complaints about what he viewed as illegal ATF wiretapping. And that’s when his life became difficult.

“That was the beginning of the end,” Cefalu told FoxNews.com.

“I had never had a disciplinary action in 18 years. Outstanding evaluations -- above average -- and on the 19th year, when I filed a complaint, I get my first unsatisfactory evaluation ever.”...

He received unsatisfactory evaluations complaining about his use of foul language. The termination letter also notes there were complaints about his smoking and “even your hygiene.”...

Cefalu said his work on the Project Gunrunner scandal likely was

  • the last straw for his bosses.

I think it’s obvious why they’re doing this. It was my willingness to expose (Project Gunrunner) and support other people to come forward,” Cefalu said."

US emergency oil reserves technically do not exist, as they are now 'global' oil reserves eyed especially by geniuses in Europe these days

.

The Bush fellas were globalists, but Obama elevates the definition. It appears 'our' emergency oil has been viewed by other countries as 'their' oil since 2005, and today relates to European supplies vs the war in Libya:

6/26/11, "Why Did Obama Open the Strategic Petroleum Reserve?" Steve Malloy, RedState.com

"I concluded that the President’s goal (in releasing emergency reserves) is a bump in the polls, but that the effect would be short-lived. Most in the media concluded the same.

But then I reread the DOE press release: “… the U.S. and its partners in the International Energy Agency have decided … .” Ach so. Our International President strikes again. Ceding control of a uniquely American asset to an international body is troubling, but par for the course in the Obama Administration.

Then I read the press release one more time.

The Administration will continue to consult closely with other consuming and producing countries in the period ahead.

Reserves in the SPR are sufficient to allow Mr. Obama to play this game from now until

  • the November 2012 election.

Uh-oh. Now I’m really paranoid.

In 2008 the Congressional Research Service issued a report titled “The Strategic Petroleum Reserve: History, Perspectives and Issues” (pdf link) which describes the legal requirements for a President to order a draw on the SPR. Initially created as strictly a emergency stockpile for domestic supply disruptions, in 2005 Congress loosened the drawdown criteria and explicitly contemplated IEA cooperation.*

Excerpt from "The Strategic Petroleum Reserve: History, Perspectives and Issues", a report prepared by the Congressional Research Service, May 8, 2008. Highlighting added.

Read that last highlight again. A conniving president could, if I read the CRS study correctly, declare back-to-back emergencies eight times between today and the November 2012 elections. Eight times 30 million barrels is 240 million barrels. Take that away from the 727 million currently in inventory, and it leaves you with 487 million barrels, just under the statutory minimum volume of 500 million barrels....

To the extent there is an “emergency”, it’s a lot more urgent for Europe than it is for the U.S.

Who are the IEA member countries? Basically, the European Union, plus the U.S., Canada, Australia and South Korea.

IEA’s announcement of the release makes no separate mention of the U.S., although SPR oil accounts for half the total. In the IEA account, the release was an IEA decision.

International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka announced that the 28 IEA member countries have agreed to release 60 million barrels of oil in the coming month in response to the ongoing disruption of oil supplies from Libya. This supply disruption has been underway for some time and its effect has become more pronounced as it has continued. The normal seasonal increase in refiner demand expected for this summer will exacerbate the shortfall further. Greater tightness in the oil market threatens to undermine the fragile global economic recovery.

Here are some questions that journalists should be asking Secretary Chu, Secretary Geithner and President Obama:

---------------------

*In 2006, a year after Bush globalized our oil reserves, Republican voters had seen enough. Bush lost the House of Representatives to democrats. Shortly after that came Obama's election, a landslide for democrats in the House in 2008, and a technical passage of ObamaCare in 2009 (which not even Obama apparently has read).

.

Highest GOP polling since 2009 was week before Nov. 2010 elections proving again that Tea Party is right and establishment GOP is wrong

.
More proof if needed that the establishment GOP which gave us Obama could easily beat him if they wanted to or if they listened to the voters. But they don't want to beat Obama and they despise voters.

6/27/11, "Generic Congressional Ballot," Rasmussen Polls

"Republicans hold a seven-point lead over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the

  • week ending Sunday, June 26.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 44% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate, while 37% would choose the Democrat instead. This is almost

The GOP has been consistently ahead on the Generic Ballot since June 2009, leading by as much as 12 points and as little as two. The week before Election Day last November, support for Republicans peaked at 51%, the highest level of support either party has enjoyed in the last two years,

  • but GOP support tapered off after that.

This marks the 14th week in a row that Republican support has fallen in the narrow range of 41% to 44%....

Republicans post a 38% to 24% lead among voters not affiliated with either of the major parties, but another 38% of that group remains either undecided or leans towards a third-party candidate....

It is worth noting that during 2006 and 2008, Democrats led on the Generic Congressional Ballot and also were trusted more than Republicans on the health care issue. Following passage of the president's health care proposal, the Republicans became the more trusted party on health care and also took the lead on the Generic Ballot. In January of this year, Republicans held a 14-point advantage on the health care issue,

  • but that has disappeared.

Still, for four weeks in a row, a generic Republican candidate has led President Obama in a hypothetical 2012 election matchup.

Voters are more willing than ever to elect a woman president, and most think there’s a good chance a woman will win the White House in the next 10 years.

Most voters still want to repeal the national health care law, and confidence that the law will improve the quality of health care

  • has fallen to a new low."...

Anatomical term 'labia' now included in trips to US airport. Canadian wonders why Americans have given up their country to terrorists so easily

.
An American notes our elected 'representatives' continue to ignore this illegal farce already proven easy to foil. Obama came to destroy and the GOP won't stop him.

6/27/11, "TSA Obergropinfuhrer of the Day," Mark Steyn, NRO, The Corner

"Amy Alkon posts a response from a bureaucratic bozo to her own experience at the airport. Caution for sensitive types: The word “labia” is included. But that’s because in 21st century America the anatomical feature “labia” are included in a trip to the airport – and that’s what should concern you. As the crack TSA agent informs Miss Alkon, “We
  • go thru sensitive areas
  • with back of hand.”

That’s great news! Somewhere on page 273 of the handbook, there’s a graphic detailing the precise point on the upper thigh where the licensed state groper is obliged to invert his paw....

Lean, constrained government would not only be affordable but smarter. The bloated moronic airport security regime is a particularly ugly example. In a decade of existence, it has never stopped a single terrorist, but it can successfully cow a dying woman born during the Wilson Administration
  • into removing her diaper."...

Obama TSA forces dying, 95 year old woman to remove soiled adult diaper, was impeding TSA perv search. A 4th amendment violation

.
Republicans who are thrown out in 2012 should wonder if the reason was their failure to do whatever necessary to stop TSA molestations. If a Republican president had started these searches, screaming riots and protests would long since have ended them as a violation of the 4th amendment.

6/25/11, "Elderly woman asked to remove adult diaper during TSA search," Northwest Florida Daily News

"A woman has filed a complaint with federal authorities over how her elderly mother was treated at Northwest Florida Regional Airport last weekend.

Jean Weber of Destin filed a complaint with the Department of Homeland Security after her 95-year-old mother was detained and extensively searched last Saturday while trying to board a plane to fly to Michigan to be with family members

  • during the final stages of her battle with leukemia.

Her mother, who was in a wheelchair, was asked to remove an adult diaper in order to complete a pat-down search.

“It’s something I couldn’t imagine happening on American soil,” Weber said Friday. “Here is my mother, 95 years old, 105 pounds, barely able to stand, and then this.”

Sari Koshetz, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration in Miami, said she could not comment on specific cases to protect the privacy of those involved....

Weber’s mother entered the airport’s security checkpoint in a wheelchair because she was not stable enough to walk through, Weber said.

Wheelchairs trigger certain protocols, including pat-downs and

  • possible swabbing for explosives, Koshetz said....

Weber said she did not know whether her mother had triggered an alarm during

  • the 45 minutes they were detained.

She said her mother was first pulled aside into a glass-partitioned area and patted down. Then she was taken to another room to protect her privacy during a more extensive search, Weber said....

She said security personnel then came out and told her they would need for her mother to remove her Depends diaper because it was soiled and was

  • impeding their search.

Weber wheeled her mother into a bathroom, removed her diaper and returned. Her mother did not have another clean diaper with her, Weber said.

Weber said she wished there were less invasive search methods for an elderly person who is unable to walk through security gates....

Koshetz said the procedures are the same for everyone

  • to ensure national security.

TSA cannot exempt any group from screening because we know from intelligence that there are terrorists out there that would then exploit that vulnerability,” she said.

Weber filed a complaint through Northwest Florida Regional’s website. She said she received a response from a Homeland Security representative at the airport on Tuesday and spoke to that person on the phone Wednesday.

The representative told her that

  • personnel had followed procedures during the search, Weber said.

“Then I thought, if you’re just following rules and regulations, then the rules and regulations need to be changed,” she said.

Weber said she plans to file additional complaints next week.

I’m not one to make waves, but dadgummit, this is wrong. People need to know. Next time it could be you.”"

-------------------------------

These searches are in violation of the 4th amendment

11/29/10, "Pat down or profile: time for Uncle Sam to stop groping and “get a grip”, Historeo, Bill Brewer

"The Fourth Amendment protects citizens against unreasonable searches. An unreasonable search is any search conducted without “probable cause.”

TSA has obviously been violating the Fourth Amendment for a long time. It’s time to stop the abuse.

“Probable cause” is all about probabilities.

Some things indicate a higher probability of being a terrorist. Some things don’t.

The probability of an elderly, widowed, Caucasian, female, native U.S. citizen being a terrorist is close to zero.

But the probability of a young, unmarried, Muslim, Arab, male, native of Saudi Arabia being a terrorist is reasonably high.

So searching the elderly lady would be unreasonable. But searching the young Arab would not. In the latter case, failure to do so would be reckless.

Of course there’s another name for making distinctions between young Arab men and elderly White women. It’s called “profiling.”

Some call it unconstitutional. The Fourth Amendment sees it as a hedge against unreasonable searches."

Green regulators have turned off the water in the heart of Central California's farm land, creating massive unemployment and starvation. To help California, Soros spent a fortune to legalize marijuana there. Californians have come to believe this would be good for their economy, people would be put to work selling the marijuana and collecting sales tax. All this is proof if needed that liberalism is a disease of suicide and homicide.

"Then there’s California, rich in everything from oil and food to international trade and technology, but still skimming along the bottom of the national economy. The state’s unemployment rate is now worse than Michigan’s and ahead only of neighboring Nevada. Among the nation’s 20 largest metropolitan regions, four of the six with the highest unemployment numbers are located in the Golden State: Riverside, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. In a recent Forbes survey, California was home to six of the ten regions where the economy is poised to get worse.

One would think, given these gory details, California officials would be focused on reversing the state’s performance. But here, as in Iran, officialdom focuses more on theology than on actuality. Of course, California’s religion rests not on conventional divinity but on a secular environmental faith that nevertheless exhibits the intrusive and unbending character of radical religion.

As with its Iranian counterpart, California’s green theology often leads to illogical economic and political decisions. California has decided, for example, to impose a rigid regime of state-directed planning related to global warming, making a difficult approval process for new development even more onerous. It has doubled-down on climate change as other surrounding western states — such as Nevada, Utah and Arizona —

  • have opted out of regional greenhouse gas agreements.

The notion that a state economy — particularly one that has lost over 1.15 million jobs in the past decade — can impose draconian regulations beyond those of their more affluent neighbors, or the country,

  • would seem almost absurd.
Californians are learning what ideological extremism can do to an economy. In the Islamic Republic, crazy theology leads to misallocating resources to support repression at home and terrorism abroad. In California green zealots compel companies to shift their operations to states that are still interested in growing their economy — like Texas. The green regime is one reason why CEO Magazine has ranked California the worst business climate in the nation.

Some of these green policies often offer dubious benefits for the environment. For one thing, forcing California businesses to move to less energy-efficient states, or to developing countries like China, could have a negative impact overall since shifting production to Texas or China might lead to higher greenhouse gas production given California’s generally milder climate. A depressed economy also threatens many worthy environmental programs, delaying necessary purchases of open space and forcing the closure of parks. These programs enhance life for the middle and working classes without damaging the overall econmy.

But people involved in the tangible, directly carbon-consuming parts of the economy — manufacturing, warehousing, energy and, most important, agriculture — are those who bear the brunt of the green jihad [ ] . Farming has long been a field dominated by California, yet environmentalist pressures for cutbacks in agricultural water supplies have turned a quarter million acres of prime Central Valley farmland fallow,

  • creating mass unemployment in many communities.
“California cannot have it both ways, a desire for economic growth yet still overregulating in the areas of labor, water, environment,” notes Dennis Donahue, a Democrat and mayor of Salinas, a large agricultural community south of San Jose. Himself a grower, Donahue sees agricultural in California being undermined by ever-tightening regulations, which have led some to expand their operations to other sections of the country, Mexico and even further afield.

Other key blue collar industries are also threatened, from international trade to manufacturing. Since before the recession California manufacturing has been on a decline. Los Angeles, still the nation’s largest industrial area, has lost a remarkable one-fifth of its manufacturing employment since 2005.

California’s ultra-aggressive greenhouse gas laws will further the industrial exodus out of the state and further impoverish Californians. Grandiose plans to increase the percentage of renewable energy in the state from the current unworkable 20% to 33% by 2020 will boost the state’s electricity costs, already among the highest in the nation, and could push the average Californian’s bill up a additional 20%.

Ironically California, still the nation’s third largest oil producer, should be riding the rise in commodity prices, but the state’s green politicians seem determined to drive this sector out of the state.. In Richmond, east of San Francisco, onerous regulations pushed by a new Green-led city administration may drive a huge Chevron refinery, a major employer for blue collar workers, out of the city entirely. Roughly a thousand jobs are at stake, according to Chevron’s CEO, who also questioned whether the company would continue to make other investments inside the state.

Being essentially a religion, the green regime answers its critics with a well-developed mythology about how these policies can be implemented without economic distress. One common delusion in Sacramento holds that the state’s vaunted “creative” economy — evidenced by the current bubble over surrounding social media firms will make up for any green-generated job losses.

In reality the creative economy simply cannot make up for losses in more tangible industries. Over the past decade, as the world digitized, the San Jose area experienced one of the stiffest drops in employment of any of the 50 largest regions of the country; its 18% decline was second only to Detroit. Much of the decline was in manufacturing and services, but tech employment has generally suffered. Over the past decade California’s number of workers in science, technology, engineering and math-related fields actually shrank. In contrast, the country’s ranks of such workers expanded 2.3% and prime competitors such as

  • Texas , Washington and Virginia enjoyed double-digit growth.
So who really benefits from the green jihad? To date, the primary winners have been crony capitalists, like President Obama’s newly proposed commerce secretary, John Bryson, who built a fantastically lucrative career (he was once named Forbes’ “worst valued chief executive”) while running the regulated utility Edison International. A lawyer by training, Bryson helped found the green powerhouse National Resources Defense Council. He’s been keen to promote strict renewable energy standards that also happen
  • to benefit solar power and electric car companies
Other putative winners would be large international companies, like Siemens, that hope to build California’s proposed high-speed rail line, the one big state construction project favored by the green-crony capitalist alliance. Fortunately , the states dismal fiscal situation and rising cost estimates for the project, from $42 to as high as $67 billion, as well as cuts in federal subsidies, are undermining support for this project even among some liberal Democrats. Even in a theocracy, reality does, at times, intrude.

Finally, there are the lawyers — lots of them. A hyper-regulatory state requires legal services just like a theocracy needs mobs of mullahs and bare knuckled religious enforcers. No surprise the number of lawyers in California increased by almost a quarter last decade, notes Sara Randazzo of the Daily Journal. That’s two and a half times the rate of population growth.

The legal boom has been most exuberant along the affluent coast. Over the past decade, the epicenter of the green jihad, San Francisco, the number of practicing attorneys increased by 17%, five times the rate of the city’s population increase. In the Silicon Valley, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties boosted their number of lawyers at a similar rate. In contrast, lawyer growth rate in interior counties has generally been far slower, often a small fraction of their overall population growth.

If California is to work again for those outside the yammering classes, some sort of realignment with economic reality needs to take place. Unlike Iran, California does not need a regime change, just a shift in mindset that would jibe with the realities of global competition and
  • the needs of the middle class."...

Goldman Sachs made $1.3 billion options deal with Gaddafi funds, money was lost in 2008 market, now Libya says Goldman didn't have authorization

Goldman Sachs made $1.3 billion in options deals with Libya's Gaddafi which lost nearly all their value in 2008. Someone is out the money, but Libyan officials say the investments weren't properly authorized.

6/25/11, "Goldman's Libya fund deal lacked standard documents - report," Reuters

"U.S. bank Goldman Sachs (GS.N) lacked the standard documents it needed to protect itself in a series of options trades it made for the Libyan Investment Authority in 2008, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

The contracts, which are standard for the industry when structuring international deals in murky markets such as credit default swaps, would have defined the exact terms of the relationship between Goldman and the sovereign wealth fund controlled by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the Journal said.

A lack of such contracts, while not illegal, deepened the crisis between the two parties when the $1.3 billion (814.3 million pounds) in investments lost nearly all their value during the financial market meltdown in 2008, the paper said.

It was unclear why the contracts were not signed and Goldman Sachs could not be immediately reached for comment.

Some Libyan officials have said that the fund's managers did not understand the investments and were

  • not authorized to approve them, the paper said.

Goldman disputed the claims, citing money transfer records and recorded communications with Libyan officials as evidence that officials were fully aware of the trades that were being conducted, it said."

Supreme Court says scientists do not agree on relation between CO2 and climate, is not a settled issue, suggests reading of climate realist Dyson

6/23/11, "Lawrence Solomon: Supreme skeptics," Financial Post, Lawrence Solomon

"The justices of the United States Supreme Court this week became the world’s most august global warming sceptics. Not by virtue of their legal reasoning – the global warming case they decided turned on a technical legal issue — but in their surprising commentary. Global warming is by no means a settled issue, they made clear, suggesting it would be
  • foolhardy to assume it was.

The court, we caution, endorses no particular view of the complicated issues related to carbon-dioxide emissions and climate change,” reads the 8-0 decision,

  • delivered by the court’s acclaimed liberal,
  • Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The court decision noted that the Environmental Protection Agency itself had “Acknowledg[ed] that not all scientists agreed on the causes and consequences of the rise in global temperatures,” before suggesting readers consult “views opposing” the conventional wisdom. Specifically, the justices’ recommended reading was a superb profile of Princeton’s Freeman Dyson, perhaps America’s most respected scientist, written in the New York Times Magazine, March 29, 2009.

Justice Ginsburg notes carbon dioxide is necessary and ubiquitous, and thus shouldn’t be the target of indiscriminate attacks. “After all, we each emit carbon dioxide merely by breathing,” she notes, repeating a point that Dyson couldn’t have said better himself.
