Rush Limbaugh's dear friend Karl Rove has secret billionaire fundraiser, gives secret cash details, threatens Akin with death, Bloomberg reports

.
Karl Rove hasn't destroyed the Republican Party enough. If Obama wins he has Karl Rove to thank. Rove insists the GOP must not attack Obama. Romney buys goods from proven failures and embarrassments like Rove.

8/31/12, "Exclusive: Inside Karl Rove's Billionaire Fundraiser," Bloomberg, Sheelah Kolhatkar

"On the final morning of the Republican National Convention, Karl Rove took the stage at the Tampa Club to provide an exclusive breakfast briefing to about 70 of the Republican Party’s highest-earning and most powerful donors. During the more than hour-long session, Rove explained to an audience dotted with hedge fund billionaires and investors—including John Paulson and Wilbur Ross—how his super PAC, American Crossroads, will persuade undecided voters in crucial swing states to vote against Barack Obama. He also detailed plans for Senate and House races, and joked, “We should sink Todd Akin. If he’s found mysteriously murdered, don’t look for my whereabouts!”

Then Rove pleaded with his audience for more money—much more.

This rare look at the mechanics of super-PAC fundraising and electoral strategy was likely not intended for reporters. I was invited as the guest of a financier who is a significant Republican donor. The financier knew that I was a journalist. At no point was I presented with, nor did I agree to, restrictions regarding the information I heard. Upon my arrival at the breakfast, I was not asked if I was a journalist. I gave my name, identified the person who had invited me, was handed a wristband, and ushered into the dining room. American Crossroads disputes this version of events, but a spokesman did not immediately return calls to elaborate.

The morning began with an address about the urgency of defeating Obama by Florida’s Republican Senator Marco Rubio. Crossroads Chief Executive Officer Steven Law followed and introduced some of the super PAC’s staff, referring to general counsel Tom Josefiak as “the guy who keeps us from ever having to wear orange jumpsuits.”

Then came the main event: Rove, joined by former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, laid out his strategy for winning the White House. “The people we’ve got to win in this election, by and large, voted for Barack Obama,” Rove said, in a soothing, professorial tone, explaining why the campaign hadn’t launched more pointed attacks on the president’s character.

Rove explained that Crossroads had conducted extensive focus groups and shared polling and focus group data with “all the major groups that are playing” in the election. “As many of you know, one of the most important things about Crossroads is: We don’t try and do this alone. We have partners,” he said. “The Kochs—you name it.”

What had emerged from that data is an “acute understanding of the nature of those undecided, persuadable” voters. “If you say he’s a socialist, they’ll go to defend him. If you call him a ‘far out left-winger,’ they’ll say, ‘no, no, he’s not.’” The proper strategy, Rove declared, was criticizing Obama without really criticizing him—by reminding voters of what the president said that he was going to do and comparing it to what he’s actually done. “If you keep it focused on the facts and adopt a respectful tone, then they’re gonna agree with you.”

In Rove’s estimation, things are going well. “Barack Obama unleashed hell on our candidate on May 15,” he said. “Between May 15 and July 31st, he spent $111 million on ads out of his campaign war chest, and there was about another $17, $18 million spent by outside groups. The day that this started, the Gallup poll was 45-45. On the 31st of July, it was 46-46.”

“We spent—outside groups spent $110 million and Romney spent $42 million,” Rove continued. “So the bad guys [Democrats] spent $130 million and the good guys [Republicans] spent $152 million, and our money didn’t go as far as theirs because we couldn’t buy at the lowest unit rate. Really, it was sort of roughly equivalent, and we fought it to a draw.” And that, Rove pointed out, was after a brutal Republican primary. “We have to keep in mind whose vote we’re trying to get—it ain’t the delegate from Alaska. It’s not the alternate from Alabama. It’s some undecided voter in the battleground state who likes the president.”

Rove spoke almost exclusively about defeating Barack Obama and retaking control of the White House. There was sparse praise for Mitt Romney—either as a candidate or as a future leader and policy maker.

One of the few Romney mentions was by Haley Barbour, who jumped in to explain how Democrats hoped to define the nominee: “You know, ‘Romney is a vulture capitalist who doesn’t care about the likes of you. He doesn’t even know people like you—he’ll lay you off, cancel your insurance, shit jobs. He’s a plutocrat. Married to a known equestrian!’”

The room erupted in laughter.

Barbour predicted that the Democrats were going to “get nastier, more negative, more vicious, more personal. We’re going to have to put on our big-boy britches and respond with what the American people want to hear: What are we going to do to solve the problems in this country.”

Rove’s analysis of the Senate races was technical and masterly. The Republicans need four seats to gain a majority, and Rove said he feels “really good” about Nebraska and is optimistic about North Dakota, even though Democrats have a strong candidate in former state Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp. “We’re deeply engaged” there, Rove said. In Wisconsin, former Governor Tommy Thompson “has an excellent shot to win—he has a quirky, cross-party appeal.” Virginia is going to be tight and will likely mirror the way the state votes in the presidential race. Of those, Rove declared, “we can win three.”

In Connecticut, Rove noted that Linda McMahon, the former head of World Wrestling Entertainment, whom he had once written off, was running a “really smart campaign.” And the state, he noted, had moved more to the right. “Those affluent, socially liberal, economically conservative people in Fairfield County and the New York suburbs have finally figured out that their pocketbooks matter more than abortion.”

There are six Republican incumbents Rove identified as in jeopardy, but the biggest risk to Republican hopes of retaking the Senate is Todd Akin in Missouri, following his comments about “legitimate rape.” Rove urged every attendee to apply pressure on Akin to convince him to leave the race. “We have five people who are interested” in replacing Akin, Rove said. “We don’t care who the nominee is, other than get Akin out.”

Just to get the “juices flowing” of the billionaires in the room, Rove shared a little anecdote. Someone he described as a “benefactor” had recently contacted him, offering to donate $10 million to be deployed in Florida—$5 million for Republican Congressman Connie Mack’s Senate race against incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson and $5 million for the presidential race. But the donor placed two conditions on the money. One, his donation had to be matched by other donors. And two, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush had to start making phone calls on their behalf. Rove paused for effect and announced: “Jeb’s making phone calls for us!” The crowd erupted.

American Crossroads’s total budget, Rove said, was $300 million, with $200 million of it for the presidential race, $70 million for the Senate, and $32 million for the House.

After screening a collection of television ads aimed at such Senate battleground states as Massachusetts, the fundraising began in earnest. CEO Law said that because of the “tremendous generosity” of many of the people in the room, American Crossroads is two-thirds of the way toward reaching its $300 million goal. But it still needs much more. With advertising rates going up and the necessity of “dealing with the gender-gap issue,” they could easily spend more than $300 million.

Barbour made the final pitch. “You all give so unbelievably generously. But you know what, I don’t have any compunction about looking you in the eye and asking for more,” he said. He compared the importance of a donation to American Crossroads in this cycle to donations made to “the charity hospital” or a “big not-for-profit cancer research program that you give to.”

“This is a high-stakes election,” he continued. “The consequences are greater than any election, and I know everybody in here wants their children and grandchildren to inherit the same country we did. I honestly believe those are the stakes.”" via Free Republic

Commenter to Bloomberg story about sociopath Karl Rove says she's tweeting it all over to help Obama. (Ed. note: Romney could win in a landslide if he stopped listening to the Karl Rove crowd. He could win without spending so much money):

"Jane Devin, Today 09:19 AM

Stunning on so many levels. It's not their actions that keep them out of orange jump suits, it's their lawyers. Romney doesn't really matter, except that he's a good puppet for other corporate profiteers. After tying Obama's hands in every conceivable way, their plan is to show how he didn't keep his promises. Tweeted and FB'ed and hope more people will read, because this isn't about welfare, abortion, jobs, or even politics as usual. This election is about whether we have a government "for the people, by the people" or "for corporations, by corporations".

I have no idea why anyone pays attention to Rove. He won two presidential elections by the very skin of his teeth. He was disastrously wrong in 2006 and 2008. He actively worked to sabotage Conservative candidates in 2010. And know he does this bit of stupidity.

Rove is the Democrat Party's best ally."

"The GOP guru’s campaign cash binge this fall is the last gasp of a guy with rich friends. Ex-Bush aide Matt Latimer on how Rove hurt his boss, and

  • why the right thinks he’s a fraud.

Political types tend to get suspicious when those on one side of the spectrum suddenly start complimenting their supposed worst enemies—the equivalent of Seinfeld hosting a testimonial for Newman or Eliot Ness carpooling with Al Capone.

Yet in the past few weeks, the White House and even The New York Times have done exactly that—heaping praise on their longtime nemesis, Karl Rove,

8/31/12, "Chris Matthews Praises Jeb Bush! What's Going On?," American Thinker, Ann Kane

The headline is of course embarrassing but I liked one of the comments. Jeb Bush is a vicious human being. He does not represent me and if he represents the majority of right of center Americans this country is dead and buried. American Thinker continues to sell the false notion that it's Republican v Democrat and that right of center Americans are automatically Republicans, and all Republicans consider Jeb Bush a fellow traveler. A commenter schools American Thinker:

JimPVA

"We have to "change the tone and the intensity." JEB Bush is disingenuous hack. I am completely fed up with JEB and all the rest of the Bushes talking down everyone else in the GOP as if they were Klansmen in full regalia out for a midnight ride to purge America of people of color, Catholics and Jews. Talk about code words. Every time JEB or any of the others speak we hear transparent code words for bigot directed at people who disagree with open borders, illegal immigrants getting away with law breaking and a double standard in law enforcement. If illegals don't have to obey our laws, then why do I have to pay taxes, to name just one? Mrs. JEB, who is a 100% bona fide Mexican citizen- or was- clearly has JEB and all the rest of the Kennebunkport Krew by the chimmey chongas. Hispanics reject the GOP message of self reliance, low taxes, limited government, and free markets for everyone, not just themselves by taking jobs from Americans. (That's right they have. They have driven down wages too.) JEB believes their votes are up for sale and the GOP should offer them amnesty and government bennies so they will vote GOP. I guess he's right since they keep voting for the Dems. Matthews is doing some kind of fake out or reverse psychology. Hopefully he'll get JEB to go on over to the Democrat Party so we will not have to listen to him as a GOP 'spokesman' anymore."

Investors line up for farmland in Germany to cash in on ethanol subsidies. Subsidized gold rush creates ecological disaster-Der Spiegel

.
In 2011 Germany couldn't produce enough grain to meet its needs.

8/30/12, "Biogas Boom in Germany Leads to Modern-Day Land Grab," Der Spiegel, by Nils Klawitter

"Creating energy from corn once seemed like a revolutionary idea in Germany. But subsidies for the biogas industry have led to entire regions of the country being covered by the crop, and investors are eagerly waiting for local farmers' land to go for sale. Some of those farmers who lease their land say they have been "ruined."

Dairy farmer Renate Rahn has made it through a number of industry crises, including the mad-cow disease scare of 2001 and the dramatic fall in milk prices in 2009. "But now we're being brought to our knees," she says.

Low milk prices aren't the only thing threatening her. Rahn lives near the Eider River in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, where she is having an increasingly hard time finding affordable land to lease for grazing her cows and growing their feed. Over the past four years, the average cost of leasing a hectare (2.5 acres) of land has skyrocketed from €250 ($315) to over €600 per year.

She and her fellow dairy farmers just lost even more corn fields to biogas companies. The corn grown there won't be used to feed any cows. Instead, it will be sent to a reactor for refinement. The facility, which functions somewhat like a cow's stomach, will be fed chopped-up corn twice a day. The corn is transformed into gases in the dome of the reactor. Energy-rich methane is then channeled into a combined heat and power unit (CHP) and transformed into electricity.

While dairy farmers like Rahn are being threatened by the low prices that food discounters offer for their milk, the biogas producers have nothing to complain about. Germany's Renewable Energy Act (EEG) has subsidized the energy the biogas companies produce for 20 years.

Rahn is now forced to feed her cows soy meal from Brazil, which is constantly growing more expensive. She knows she will lose the battle over the raw materials, and she blames politicians for having "ruined us."

The idea of processing foodstuffs into electricity was born when Germany's then-governing coalition was made up of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Green Party between 1998 and 2005. It was eight years ago, in an age when farmers were being granted so-called "set-aside premiums" because of overproduction, and when renewable raw materials were being particularly promoted. Plans called for transforming Germany into a bio-wonderland by peppering it with numerous small eco-power plants. What resulted was a revolution in the fields, a subsidized gold rush -- and an ecological disaster.

An average-sized biogas facility requires 200 hectares of corn, and needs to be constantly fed. This hunger for corn has transformed the German landscape. Schleswig-Holstein used to be famous as the "land of horizons," but now walls of corn dominate the landscape from north to south. The same holds true in the roughly 160-kilometer (100-mile) stretch of land between Münster and Bremen, in Upper Swabia and in the low mountain ranges of the western Eifel region.

Corn is now being grown on 810,000 hectares in Germany, which is equivalent to half of the area of the eastern state of Thuringia. In 2011 alone, the increase in the amount of land used to grow corn was almost equivalent to the size of the southwestern state of Saarland -- with horrific consequences. For the first time in 25 years, Germany couldn't produce enough grain to meet its own needs."... via Tom Nelson

1 in 8 acres of German farmland is coverted to ethanol, price of wheat highest in 25 years-BBC

.
8/31/12, "Biofuel crops transform German farming," BBC

"The shepherds of Germany are worried. There are still about 2,000 of them tending sheep on grasslands, plying their ancient trade and defying time and the intrusions of modernity.

But it is a losing battle. The pastures they and the sheep need are diminishing. The shepherds blame biofuels. They complain that meadows where sheep have always grazed are being turned over to the growing of crops for power generation.

Maik Gersonder tends flocks in eastern Germany. It is getting harder to find suitable grassland because fields are being switched to grow maize (corn), which is processed into ethanol for cars.

"We have many problems with it," he told the BBC. "We have to go further to find land to graze the sheep. And it's pushed the price of land up."

The price of food on world markets is high at the moment - not quite as high as in 2008, but still very high compared with previous decades. In Germany, where one in eight acres of farmland is now used for biofuels, the price of wheat is at its highest in 25 years.

But the farmers who do the growing say that high prices are a recent thing, and that for too long food has been too cheap to grow profitably - so they have turned land over to plants for biofuel.

Hellmuth Riestock has a big farm north of Berlin - but he is also now a generator of electricity. Alongside the cowshed are big green tanks into which chopped-up plants are put. They are mulched and processed to emit gas, which is then used for power generation. He uses some of the electricity, with the excess being sold to the grid.

Last year, the price of his rye was so low it was not worth selling for food - so he turned it into electricity. This year, higher prices mean it will end up going into a mouth rather than a gas tank.

He thinks a system where it pays him to grow crops for fuel is not right. "It's a problem that food's been too cheap - so switching land to grow fuel made economic sense. And that's a relationship that needs to be addressed."

It is being addressed at the top of government - or rather argued over, because two of the important ministers take opposite views on the impact of biofuels.

The country's development minister, Dirk Niebel, said as he toured African countries recently: "We need to put corn on the plate, not in the tank."

But the environment minister, Peter Altmaier, disagreed. "There is no connection between the production of biofuel and food prices," he said, "not in Germany, anyway"."...

Communist China funding anti-US, anti-NATO radio station in Afghanistan

.
8/31/12, "China Funding Anti-American Afghan Radio," Washington Free Beacon, Bill Gertz

"China government funding anti-U.S., anti-NATO radio broadcasts in Afghanistan"

"A popular radio station in Afghanistan is funded by China’s international propaganda outlet and is broadcasting news with an anti-U.S. and anti-NATO bent, according to U.S. officials.

The Pashto-language Spogmai radio was set up recently as an FM station in Afghanistan, and U.S. officials say it admits to receiving funds from China Radio International (CRI), Beijing’s state-run propaganda outlet formerly known as Radio Beijing.

U.S. officials said an analysis of Spogmai revealed it has received training and equipment in addition to the funding and that much of its news reports include anti-American and anti-NATO material, along with occasional anti-Pakistan broadcasts.

Spogmai broadcasters took part in an international forum in Beijing on Dec. 2 and told attendees that CRI was providing funding, training, and equipment.

U.S. monitoring of Spogmai broadcasts since May reveals that its broadcasts are systematically critical of the U.S. military and NATO, which have been spending billions of dollars to rebuild Afghanistan and battle the Islamist Taliban insurgency.

One July 31 broadcast stated that Afghans are the only casualty of “someone else’s war” and are fighting their own people on behalf of U.S. and western “politicians.”"...via Hot Air

'Media strikes back' after Clint Eastwood dared to mock Obama and inform the scolder-in-chief that 'we own this country'

.
Under Obama, "entertainment Overlords morphed into pathetic lapdogs to The State."

8/30/12, "Media Strikes Back After Dirty Harry Dares To Mock Obama," Breitbart, John Nolte

"Newsflash: Obama can't take a joke. But we already knew that. For four long years we've waited, hoped and prayed that some young comic would break free of the politically correct demands of The State and mock Obama the way all presidents and all people in power should be mocked. But for four long years (with a few exceptions) all we've seen instead are cowardly toadies of The State: Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Chris Rock, the cast of "Saturday Night Live"…

Since Obama won the presidency, comedy has pretty much gone straight to hell as our Entertainment Overlords morphed into pathetic lapdogs to The State; begging for scraps of attention and affection from Obama, and in the process becoming stale, lazy, dull, predictable, painfully unfunny, and like a needy poodle -- more than a little annoying.

Who would've ever thought that one of the men who would display enough backbone and "edge" to finally take it to Obama with wicked mockery on about 30 million live television screens would be 82 year-old Clint Eastwood?

Once we learned Eastwood was the night's mystery guest, no one knew what to expect. And anyone who took a guess most certainly didn’t guess that the Oscar-winning American icon would use his opportunity to relentlessly and hilariously mock Barack Obama in front of the entire free world.

It was glorious! And everyone I've talked to who was in the hall absolutely loved it. (video at link)

Eastwood hit Obama in every sweet spot we've been waiting for him to get hit on: The incompetence; the lies; the empty, pretentious rhetoric; the inexperience; and that roaring blowhard of a moron Obama chose to be a heartbeat away.

Oh, and the empty chair. Other than an empty suit, there is no sharper metaphor.

Eastwood also made one of the very best points of the night: WE own this country, and when someone doesn't do the job "we have to let them go."

The media, naturally, is furious. They don’t like to see Their Precious One mocked and they also understand the power of mockery -- which is why they keep Stewart and Colbert on such a tight leash. This is why the media has already written 25 stories (5 from Politico) mocking Eastwood.

Had Eastwood said the things the media likes to hear with the same nervousness and hesitation, they would've called him wizened and seasoned. But because he mocked Their Precious One, suddenly he's some kind of embarrassment.

And now Politico, Ben Smith and CNN are all talking about how they intend to use Eastwood as way to overwhelm Mitt Romney's speech in the coming days.

Like they wouldn't have found another reason.

All I can say in response is: Go to hell you Obama-shilling crybabies. Eastwood showed more grit and honestly in those few minutes than you water carriers have during your entire propaganda-for-the-collective careers.

What Eastwood did tonight, was funnier, fresher, edgier, and braver than anything those comedy cowards Chris Rock, Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert have done in 15 years.

82 years-old, and Dirty Harry is still pissing all the right people off.

Race card fraud campaign elected Obama in 2008 and fully intends to re-elect him in 2012, 'The right must be made to live in constant fear'

.
Professor Jacobson notes in 2008 the media elected Obama the same way they're attempting to re-elect him, by silencing legitimate speech: "The suppression of legitimate political expression through false accusations of racism by the Obama campaign and its supporters is the defining theme of the 2008 campaign. This tactic, while it may be successful, is shameful and has damaged our society in ways we may not understand for years." "Let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear." Journolist member

7/20/2010, "Yes, Liberal Journalists Did Manipulate The 2008 Election," Legal Insurrection, William A. Jacobson

"In the past months The Daily Caller has done a good job on a variety of issues, particularly exposing the Journolist, a group of liberal mainstream media reporters and bloggers.

We all knew the mainstream media to be in cahoots with the Democratic Party, and the liberal blogosphere even more so.

But the e-mails obtained by The Daily Caller reveal an even more sordid conspiracy.

In 2008, the Journolist was intimately involved in trying to squelch the Reverend Wright controversy by smearing opponents of Barack Obama as racist:

"In one instance, Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent urged his colleagues to deflect attention from Obama’s relationship with Wright by changing the subject. Pick one of Obama’s conservative critics, Ackerman wrote, “Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.” …

[quoting Ackerman's e-mail, the article continues]

I do not endorse a Popular Front, nor do I think you need to. It’s not necessary to jump to Wright-qua-Wright’s defense. What is necessary is to raise the cost on the right of going after the left. In other words, find a rightwinger’s [sic] and smash it through a plate-glass window. Take a snapshot of the bleeding mess and send it out in a Christmas card to let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear. Obviously I mean this rhetorically.

And I think this threads the needle. If the right forces us all to either defend Wright or tear him down, no matter what we choose, we lose the game they’ve put upon us. Instead, take one of them — Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists. Ask: why do they have such a deep-seated problem with a black politician who unites the country? What lurks behind those problems? This makes *them* sputter with rage, which in turn leads to overreaction and self-destruction."

Towards the end of the 2008 election, I wrote:

But the race card has worked again. McCain is afraid to attack the Wright/Obama connection for fear of being called racist.

It is the stifling of legitimate debate which is fueling anger throughout the country. We are on the verge of electing a president who built his political career on the backs of race-baiters and anti-american zealots, and we can’t talk about it out of fear of being called “racist.”

The suppression of legitimate political expression through false accusations of racism by the Obama campaign and its supporters is the defining theme of the 2008 campaign. This tactic, while it may be successful, is shameful and has damaged our society in ways we may not understand for years.

The story is not just that liberal journalists are a bunch of conspiring liars and frauds.

The real story is that liberal journalists manipulated the 2008 election by actively campaigning in secret for Barack Obama, and stifling debate on critical issues by smearing opponents as racist.

This is no joke. We now are paying the price, both in the destruction of our economy and standing in the world, and the continued race-card playing antics of groups like Think Progress and the NAACP. The race card tactic was so successful in 2008, that it is being tried again and again.

Don’t get mad, get even … at the polls. Remember November.

===========================

State-owned BBC says methane climate terror could be worse than ongoing CO2 terror via catastrophic man-caused global warming. BBC says of the Antarctic "as ice retreats"...but offers no proof Antarctic ice "is retreating." US government data says it's not retreating. BBC says increased CO2 will cause billions of tons of lethal methane gas to escape which will burn the planet even faster. Billions more US taxpayer dollars will of course be needed. (BBC doesn't mention US taxpayers but that connection has been established by 'climate' officials in the past).

BBC doesn't mention US CO2 has dropped since at least 2006 and is going lower. Other countries' CO2 hasn't dropped despite hundreds of billions spent on cap and trade and extra taxes. Perhaps US CO2 vanished more quickly and surely than 'investors' anticipated. (Assuming CO2 was ever a danger to begin with). Many of the world's leading climate scientists didn't see the drop coming, in large part because it happened as a result of market forces rather than direct government action against carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere.

Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University, said the shift away from coal is reason for "cautious optimism" about potential ways to deal with climate change."...

"In a nasty piece of work this morning, editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal painted an ugly picture of Ann Romney. Using the most violent of metaphors, Rosenthal saw a woman who, of all things,
Rosenthal also managed to refer to mother-of-five Mrs. Romney as a "diva." Imagine the Times's outrage if a conservative ever dared to refer to First Lady Obama in such terms. Here's Rosenthal's reprehensible line:

"The genius
of Mrs. Romney’s diva performance was the way she smiled so warmly as she delicately slipped the knife into President Obama."

Not only was Rosenthal's depiction vile and violent, it was so clearly at odds with the reality that those of us in the hall or watching at home saw and heard. Despicable."

US taxpayers and our military increasingly at beck and call of failed crony, drug infested, swamp states while Americans are starving

.
"However, the Marines can’t technically use their guns except in self-defense." Our Marines chase a vicious drug cartel but can't shoot until after they've been shot.

8/29/12, "Marines vs. Zetas: U.S. Hunts Drug Cartels in Guatemala," wired.com, R., Beckhusen

"While the Marines have helped train Guatemalan troops to hunt for drug traffickers in the past, the service is now expanding into chasing traffickers directly."

"The war on drugs just got a whole lot more warlike. Two hundred U.S. Marines have entered Guatemala, on a mission to chase local operatives of the murderous Zeta drug cartel.

The Marines are now encamped after having deployed to Guatemala earlier this month, and have just “kicked off” their share of Operation Martillo, or Hammer. That operation began earlier in January, and is much larger than just the Marine contingent and involves the Navy, Coast Guard, and federal agents working with the Guatemalans to block drug shipment routes.

It’s a big shift for U.S. forces in the region. For years, the Pentagon has sent troops to Guatemala, but these missions have been pretty limited to exercising “soft power” — training local soldiers, building roads and schools. Operation Martillo is something quite different.

The news comes as two U.S. agents wounded in an attack in Mexico last week were discovered to be likely working for the CIA. The attack appears to be a case of mistaken identity after the agents fled from a Federal Police checkpoint, thinking the plain-clothed Mexican cops were cartel members. Police, seeing the agents’ bulletproof SUV flee their checkpoint, presumably thought the same thing, followed them and shot up their car. The agents have now been discovered as likely working for the CIA, as one of the wounded agents’ false identity was linked to a post office box in Virginia previously tied to CIA rendition flights.

The Marines’ share of the operation involves chasing drug traffickers with UH-1N Huey helicopters. The Marine contingent has four of the choppers, and the Marines are carrying weapons. “It’s not every day that you have 200-some Marines going to a country in Central and South America aside from conducting training exercises,” Staff Sgt. Earnest Barnes, the public affairs chief for Marine Corps Forces South, tells Danger Room. Prior to the Marines’ deployment, there were only a “handful” of Marines in the country, Barnes says.

However, the Marines can’t technically use their guns except in self-defense, and Barnes wouldn’t say whether they’re authorized to pursue drug traffickers on the ground. The description of what they’re doing, however, suggests that they probably can’t. Instead, they’ll be looking out for suspicious boats — including crude narco-submarines — and then radio the Guatemalans, who do the work seizing their drugs and arresting cartel members. That could be on rivers, or along Guatemala’s two coastlines, reports the Marine Corps Times.

Overall the Marines are there to provide aerial detection and monitoring, and aerial surveillance, and so the appropriate authorities can do their job, whether it being Guatemalan military or some other form of law enforcement agency or authority to perform their duties,” Barnes says. Among the force are pilots and communication teams, as well as combat engineers to build landing sites.

On the other hand, just because the Marines may not be officially authorized to stop drug traffickers — instead only spot them doesn’t mean they won’t be drawn into a conflict. The drug war is messy and involves going after criminal groups that don’t for the most part wear uniforms or identify themselves as cartel members. Nor is it true to say the U.S. isn’t already involved in a shooting war in Guatemala, with potentially ill consequences.

On the night of May 11, Honduran troops along with Drug Enforcement Administration agents allegedly killed two civilians — possibly four according to local accounts — including a pregnant woman. According to a report released this month by the Center for Economic Policy and Research, Guatemalan troops and U.S. agents seized a boat on a river containing cocaine near the town of Ahuas, when another boat — containing civilians — rammed into the first boat in the darkness. DEA agents and Guatemalan troops circling in a helicopter then fired on the second boat (.pdf). The U.S. has denied that any of its agents took part.

The DEA isn’t a military organization, but what the Ahuas shootings represented was a military approach to the drug war gone bad. A case of mistaken identity, sure, as the mayor of Ahuas said following the shootings. But it also reflects a danger of stopping drugs at the point of a gun.

The Ahuas shooting “demonstrates the risks of flooding foreign countries with armed representatives of the U.S. government, to fight an enemy that is largely indistinguishable from the civilian population on unknown terrain,” wrote Patrick Corcoran of InSight, a Latin America crime monitor. ”The Ahuas shooting may not have been inevitable, but as Americans take a more hands-on role, such scandals are likely to be repeated,” he wrote.

On the other hand, as Mexico’s drug violence worsened, cartels like the Zetas began spilling over Mexico’s southern border. Guatemala is now a base for the Zetas, who use the country’s remote northern region shipment route for narcotics and weapons. In February, Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina said his country is “not doing what the United States says, we are doing what we have to do” — in other words, decriminalize drugs. But Molina has also emphasized cracking down on the cartels in a mano dura, or “iron fist,” approach to crime.

Now, on the contrary, the U.S. hasn’t gone anywhere close to suggesting drugs be decriminalized. Gen. Douglas Fraser, the head of U.S. forces in South and Central America, said last year to the House Armed Sevices Committee that “the violence continues to increase in Central America, and that’s where and why we are focusing there.”

That’s where the Marines come in. And as far as the Zetas go, the U.S. hasn’t directly confronted them with troops. Mexico City will absolutely not allow it. Guatemala is different, which means the distance between the gun barrels of a militarized cartel, and that of the U.S. military, could start to get much shorter." via Lucianne

Constantly failing Communist Chinese infrastructure blamed on lack of ability to oversee criminal government officials in 1 party system-NPR

.
In 2008, 700 Chinese children were crushed to death.

8/29/12, "Chinese Blame Failing Bridges On Corruption," NPR, WBUR, F. Langfitt

"Eight bridges have collapsed around China since 2011....Local residents believe government corruption and substandard materials are to blame."

"When the Yangmingtan bridge opened in the northeastern Chinese city of Harbin in November, local officials hailed it as a grand achievement.

The bridge stretched more than nine miles and cost nearly $300 million. Construction was supposed to take three years, but workers finished in half that time.

"A lot of comrades didn't go home for more than a year, never took a holiday, never took off a weekend," Yang Qingwei, the party secretary of a bridge construction company, proudly told Heilongjiang provincial TV.

But early one morning last week, an entrance ramp to the bridge collapsed. Four trucks on the ramp tumbled to the roadway below. Three people died and five were injured.

The government initially blamed the trucks, saying they were overloaded. But infrastructure fails so often in China, most people assume the real culprit is government corruption.

Since 2011, eight bridges have collapsed around the country, according to China's state-run media. The cases include one in April 2011, when a cable snapped on a suspension bridge in Western China's Xinjiang region, sending a chunk of roadway plunging onto a riverbank.

Two months later, a bridge in southern China's Fujian province collapsed, leaving one dead and 22 injured. And in March this year, a bridge under construction in Central China's Hubei province snapped in half....

"Corruption. It is the first thing that pops into our mind," said Niu, 20. "We don't have to think about it, because it's so common."'

Niu's uncle runs a construction company in central China. She says using substandard material while charging for high-quality goods is routine.

"This analogy is made by my uncle," she said. "If the central government wants a steel bar, it should be 10 centimeters. When it comes to the province, it will be 8 centimeters, and when it comes to the city, it will be 5. This is very, very common. This is not news."

In fact, corruption and failing infrastructure have been a problem in China since the 1990s, when market reforms set the country's economy on a rocketlike trajectory. The government went on a sustained building boom that provided unprecedented opportunities for graft.

Zhu Lijia, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Governance in Beijing, said bid rigging is the norm and there are no checks or balances on the procurement process.

"The situation is going in a bad direction," said Zhu in a phone interview from Beijing. "We do have relevant laws regarding the bidding process, but there is a lack of enforcement. The bidding process is only a show."

Chinese have a phrase for these failing infrastructure projects: doufazha, which means "bean curd dregs." The most infamous case occurred in 2008, when a massive earthquake struck Sichuan province. In one poorly built school alone,

700 children were crushed to death.

"These were charity projects, and officials dared to skimp on the job and use low-quality materials," said Zhu. "This was much worse than Harbin. Up until now, we haven't seen any officials punished." The Yangmingtan bridge collapse has generated a variety of reactions in Harbin.

Many people refused to discuss it this week with a foreign reporter for fear that they would get in trouble with the local government or bring discredit to their country.

Others saw the collapse as a symptom of deeper problems with China's one-party system. A man surnamed Zhang, who designs furniture, said infrastructure continues to collapse because there is no way to police the government.

"China's civil society is not strong enough," Zhang said over Pepsis at a local KFC. "It's too fragmented and too weak and can't force the party to make changes."

Others in Harbin see collapsing projects as a fact of life in a rapidly developing country with

no rule of law....

Sun, 30, was hanging out on a bench at the Harbin Institute of Technology in a blue T-shirt, camouflage cargo pants and Crocs. Asked how society solves a problem like this, Sun was at a loss.

"We want to participate, but we aren't the government," he said. "We are just common people. We can give the government ideas. We can discuss this hot topic in private and online. That's all we can do."

Zeo Niu, the college student, is angry about the infrastructure failures. But she says what really upsets her is that so many projects collapse, people just become overwhelmed.

"I will never remember those victims' names in this accident, and people won't remember it," Niu said. "It will be buried by another accident.""

Obama admits ongoing US CO2 drop, fails to note reasons for it, doubles down on CO2 climate terror

.
8/28/12, "On Our Radar: Green Tuesday at the White House," NY Times Green blog

"In a speech at Iowa State University, he (Obama) noted that We’re on track to emit fewer greenhouse gases this year than we have in nearly 20 years.”

He did not note the role of the recession, with its attendant drop in manufacturing and car and truck trips. [White House Press Office]"

--------------------------------------------

Ed. note: Here's the full text of Obama's 8/28/12 speech at Iowa State:

8/28/12, "Remarks by President Obama at Campaign Event -- Ames, Iowa," enewspf.com

As noted by the NY Times above, Obama speaks of the remarkable, long term drop of US CO2 emissions (instead of referring to CO2 directly Obama speaks of 'greenhouse gases' but it's specifically CO2 that has been in the news, links below). Later in the speech he summarizes what are apparently meant to be his superior views, one of which is on America's role in CO2 terror. Apparently he doesn't want kids to know what's happening in the US. He says:

"Denying climate change won’t make it stop." (11 parags. from end)

He tells impressionable young minds that US CO2 terror isn't going away, denying remarkable news to the contrary he alluded to in passing moments earlier, at least in regard to the US. The news about this should be shouted from the rooftops so suffering Americans can know that their punishment has in some peoples' minds resulted in some good (ie lower CO2).

Reports say US CO2 is headed even lower (links below), and that other countries' CO2 is still rising despite hundreds of billions spent on cap and trade and extra taxes (links below). US tax money that could be used to feed the hungry or care for a sick animal is instead funneled to experimental 'climate' related ventures or research to "solve" US CO2 terror. But the problem has been solved-if it ever existed. As the NY Times notes Obama didn't elaborate on the topic.

CO2 endangerment has been the justification for diverting hundreds of billions of hard-earned tax dollars for over 2 decades at the expense of human beings.

The entire theory of catastrophic human-caused climate change/global warming rests on the notion that humans are creating too much CO2 and that it's killing people. A commodity trading market was even created just to trade carbon dioxide "offsets" for the alleged purpose of lowering CO2 in the atmosphere. This hasn't happened but CO2 traders still have billions at stake in it. Without the US as a practical and philosophical partner in "CO2 terror," world carbon markets would likely go bankrupt. This would be bad news for Goldman Sachs and many others. Citations in following links:

US CO2 has dropped since at least 2006 and is going lower. Massive global warming 'action' was institutionalized in US government in 1990 by George Bush the 1st in the "U.S. Global Change Research Act of 1990." (He mentions CO2 near the end). Devoting 13 federal agencies to 'climate' matters and paying half of UN IPCC expenses is hardly lagging in action. Even the US military now spends billions on green endeavors. Government has partnered with the 'climate' industry by funneling trillions from US taxpayers to climate endeavors via agency budget allocations, tax subsidies, countless federal regulations, and vast sums given in foreign aid to save the 'climate.' The US economy has obediently weakened itself so it's now a fuel exporter.

People are starving because of decades of climate 'action.'

Other countries' CO2 hasn't dropped, despite hundreds of billions spent on cap and trade and extra taxes. US CO2 is now a moot issue. Perhaps this situation adversely affects persons with 'climate' investments. Perhaps US CO2 vanished more quickly and surely than 'investors' anticipated. (Assuming CO2 was ever a danger to begin with).

In any case, it's over. Even the NY Times notices:

7/15/12, "Recession Special: Cleaner Air," NY Times, Matthew Wald
.
"What the government has not mandated, the economy is doing on its own: emissions of global warming gases in the United States are down.

Following may be the report Obama alluded to in his 8/28 Iowa speech:
.
8/16/12, "AP IMPACT: CO2 Emissions In US Drop To 20-Year Low," AP via NPR

"In a surprising turnaround, the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere in the U.S. has fallen dramatically to its lowest level in 20 years, and government officials say the biggest reason is that cheap and plentiful natural gas has led many power plant operators to switch from dirtier-burning coal.
