7/16/14, "Houston mothers outraged at the cost of caring for undocumented children," KHOU.com, Marcelino Benito

"The immigration crisis is touching nerves in every pocket of America. That includes the city of Houston.

"Don't bring them here," said Bernadette Lancelin. "We don't have anything for them. They've taken too much already from my kids."

Lancelin sounded off when she learned officials had been touring a vacant Houston school a possible site to house immigrant children. Mayor Annise Parker tackled questions on the situation Wednesday....

So what is the preferred solution for the flood of children flocking to the United States? So far no one has the answer. Lawmakers briefed Wednesday learned it costs the government $200 per day, per child and the tab keeps growing.

"It’s a figure that I thought was shocking and in the whole room you heard the murmuring and shock of the costs associated with this," said Senator Marco Rubio. "Ultimately, there have to be some consequences associated with coming into this country," said Senator John Cornyn.

Meanwhile tempers continue to flare across the country. And President Obama is asking Congress for over $3.4 billion in emergency aid. The nation debates, and the kids are still coming....

"Give me some of that money," said Lancelin.

That has American mothers asking lawmakers to focus on this country's children first, before spending billions on children fleeing other nations."

7/8/14, "County judge decries ‘grandstanding’ on immigrant kids," KHOU, Doug Miller

"Houston has a reputation for serving as a refuge during humanitarian crises. In the 1970’s, the city absorbed an influx of Vietnamese citizens who sought a new life here after the collapse of the Saigon government. In 2005, Gov. Rick Perry asked county officials to open the Astrodome to evacuees fleeing the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Both of those examples generated their share of controversy, just like the current child immigration crisis.

“I know that it may sound harsh, but the reality is we need to send them back home to their parents,” said State Rep. Debbie Riddle, R-Tomball, an outspoken critic of border policy.

An influx of immigrant children from Central America would place a burden on local health care and education resources, Riddle said. She’s convinced the immigration crisis has been created by drug cartels working with human smugglers to distract Border Patrol agents from their duties.

“You know, we’re compassionate, but our first priority must be for our own citizens, our own kids and the people in our own country,” Riddle said."
