Is Romney a racist for suggesting "hanging the bad jobs data around Obama's neck?" McCain's eligibility was subject of intense media speculation

4/30/11, "Is Romney a racist?" My.AuburnJournal.com

"Mitt Romney recently had a speech where he talked about "hanging" the bad jobs data "around Obama's neck". There is a video on HuffPo that is 1:38 long showing the entire clip.

From HuffPo:

"Mitt Romney's camp is attempting to do damage control after the presidential aspirant made controversial remarks in criticizing President Barack Obama during a stop

  • in New Hampshire on Friday night.

Speaking at a dinner hosted by Americans for Prosperity, the former Massachusetts governor said, "Reagan came up with this great thing about the ‘misery index’ and he hung that around Jimmy Carter’s neck and that had a lot to do with Jimmy Carter losing." He added, "Well, we’re going to have to

  • hang the ‘Obama Misery Index’ around his neck."

Romney went on to say, "I'll tell you, the fact that you've got people in this country really squeezed, with gasoline getting so expensive, with commodities getting so expensive, families are having a hard time making ends meet. So, we're going to have to talk about that, and housing foreclosures and bankruptcies and higher taxation. We're going to hang him with that,

  • so to speak, metaphorically."

After reading the story, watching the video a few times, and then reading the comments on the page....what the hell is wrong with people? These are the furthest thing from racist comments I could possibly imagine. We are desensitizing ourselves to actual racism when we make these slanderous charges any time somebody says something like this. I am about as liberal as you will get (I stop at Cap and trade, you got me), but at what point does it stop being reasonable

  • to try and pull these stunts every time a conservative talks?

That is not to say that there are some very racist things going on out there, but in order to legitimize those actual threats, we must be judicious in when we speak out and demonize people.

I think most of the birther movement was slightly racially motivated, but how can I convince any rational person of that if I call anybody that asks "why didn't he just release the BC?" a racist? I asked the same question, but not because of racial issues."...

P.S. Was it racist to question McCain's eligibility since he was born in the Panama Canal Zone to 2 American parents stationed there via the US military? Media questioned McCain's eligibility but not Obama's. McCain had plenty of conspiracy theorists and even was the subject of

It's been reported generally that McCain was at the bottom of his class at Annapolis.
