At least 500,000 Californians who voted for governor did not cast ballot for US Senate. No Republican candidate for US Senate appeared on California ballots in 2018. Only two candidates for Senate were on ballots and both were Democrats-AP

No Republican candidate for US Senate appeared on the ballot in California in either 2018 or 2012. In both years, only two candidates were on the ballot, both Democrats via California’s “jungle primary” system.

In Nov. 2018, Feinstein beat fellow Democrat de Leon with 54% of 4.6 million votes counted.

“With no Republican in the race, many voters simply took a pass at the contest. At least half a million people who voted in the governor’s race did not cast ballots for U.S. Senate.”

“de Leon’s bid against Feinstein failed to generate much attention and energy, perhaps because the seat was a lock for Democrats regardless. California’s primary system allows two members of the same party to face off in a general election, and Republicans fielded no serious candidates.”
