Jersey shore home rebuilding delayed indefinitely, fed. gov. won’t issue new building maps for at least 2 years

“Real estate agent Marion Romano told Christie she has several clients who want to rebuild their homes. But, she said, they’ve been told the Federal Emergency Management Agency won’t make new flood maps final for years and those maps are used to set building standards.

Christie said that the maps probably won’t be final for two years but that he is using advisory maps to craft new regulations, which he plans to announce next week.

“My goal is to try to give you the most aggressive protective standards I can give you,” he said. “If they decide to lower them later on, then you’ll benefit from that in your flood insurance premiums because you’ll be built to a higher standard, the federal standard will be a little bit lower and then your flood insurance premiums will go down.”

He said he doesn’t want people rebuilding based on old standards because as the flood maps change, insurance premiums would go up.

When an emotional Jackie Terefenko told Christie she had to hire her own engineer to fight with an insurance company over storm damage reimbursements, he told her exactly what she had hoped to hear.
