"The Rev. Al Sharpton and...Sen. Rand Paul: Breakfast buddiesWhat does that mean? Fresh off that less than flattering report about his taxes, the National Action Network boss sat down with the likely 2016 GOP White House candidate in the Senate Dining Room Thursday (11/20).

“We talked about his position on dealing with some criminal justice issues that I am concerned about. We also discussed mandatory sentencing that he and Sen. Cory Booker are proposing. We do not agree on executive action on the President; I agree and he does not," Sharpton summed up in a statement.

"It was a very candid and courteous conversation. We pledged to continue to have such conversations where conservatives and progressives can have dialogue and break the logjam in American discussion.”

The Kentucky Republican, in a Q and A with Salon that ran Thursday, in turn, said this on the subject of race: "I don’t think there has been anybody who has been a bigger defender of minority rights in the Congress than myself, and that’s not saying others aren’t trying as well.

"But I think you can see a history and a litany of bills that I’ve put forward to not only restore voting rights, but to try to prevent people from the tragedy of losing their employability through felony convictions and other things.""...

"If Paul wants to take on criminal justice reform, more power to him. And if he thinks this will boost him with African American voters, he won’t be the first pol to try to pick agenda items that impress slices of the electorate. But in doing precisely what the administration and so many liberals do — treating Al Sharpton as a respected and important figure — he does his own credibility harm."...
