ADP revises September 2012 jobs sharply down

.
10/31/12, New ADP Count Slashes Job Creation for September,” CNBC, Jeff Cox

Revisions to the way payroll data firm ADP counts private sector job creation have resulted in a sharp drop in the September employment count.

ADP’s new calculations put the monthly job creation at just 88,200, down from the 162,000 the firm originally reported earlier this month.

The firm recently has entered into a partnership with Moody’s Analytics that will change the way the private payroll count is calculated.

The new private payroll count now is actually under Labor’s September job creation household survey net total of 114,000, 104,000 of which came from the private sector.

The unemployment rate dropped last month to 7.8 percent. Separately, as the government’s establishment survey said the total number of new private-sector workers swelled by 873,000. (Read More: Consumer Prices Rise on Energy Surge; No Pay Gains)

Economists expect Friday’s report to show 125,000 new jobs and the jobless rate to hold steady.

When the Labor Department revealed its September job count, it sparked criticism from some quarters that the numbers were being manipulated for political purposes as the November presidential election drew near.

The soft ADP count could add credence to those who believe the pace of job creation is slower than the government’s numbers indicate.

“It’s huge, no doubt about it,” said Todd Schoenberger, managing principal at the BlackBay Group in New York. “Their changing the methodology tells me that if the number is cut in half with that revision, then the revision we’re going to see Friday is going to be a disaster.”…

ADP will announce its October count on Thursday, with the Labor Department to follow on Friday.

ADP usually releases its report on the Wednesday preceding the first Friday of the month, but held off because of damage from Hurricane Sandy. The firm is expected to announce a further revision to the September count along with its October totals. (Read More: Damage From Sandy? What About Potential Economic Boost?)

In announcing the partnership Oct. 24, the two firms said the partnership will help align the private sector job count with the Labor numbers.

At the same time, the new reports will provide a more detailed breakdown of the numbers while expanding the total of businesses that participate.

ADP occasionally has come under criticism for releasing data that is often widely disparate with the government’s final count.”

The Tonight Showhost began a series of jokes about the President during his monologue with a jab at the Commander-in-Chief dodging questions about what really happened at our consulate in Benghazi last month (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

In reality, that’s the same policy the media have had since the attack.

Commander in Chief Obama obviously decided to let Woods and Doherty die so he could get re-elected. Why does Obama think the American people should re-elect a Commander in Chief who allows Americans to suffer brutal, agonizing deaths so he can get re-elected? Two people at the White House were sent email that Americans were attacked in Benghazi at 4:05pm. A State Dept. official watched the attacks ‘in real time.’ Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty continued to fight for their lives and their country, all alone, wounded, for another 6+ hours

.
10/30/12, “Obama Met With Panetta and Biden at WH As Benghazi Terror Attack Unfolded,CNS News, T. Jeffrey

President Barack Obama met with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House on Sept. 11, 2012 at 5:00 PM—just 55 minutes after the State Department notified the White House and the Pentagon that the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi was under attack.

The meeting between Obama, Panetta and Biden had been scheduled before the attack took place, and the Department of Defense is not commenting now on whether the three men were aware when they met that day of the ongoing attack or whether Obama used that meeting to discuss with his defense secretary what should be done to defend the U.S. personnel who at that very moment were fighting for their lives in Benghazi….

The fact that the president had been scheduled to meet with Vice President Biden and Defense Secretary Panetta at 5:00 p.m. on Sept. 11 had been publicized  in the Washington Daybook–a planning service to which news organizations subscribe–and included on the official White House schedule posted online by the White House itself.

The State Department email notifying the White House and Pentagon of the Sept. 11 Benghazi attack was obtained by CBS News and reported by Sharyl Attkisson on Oct. 23, almost six weeks after the attack.

The terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi began at about 9:40 p.m. Benghazi time—or about 3:40 p.m. Washington, D.C. time. “The attack began at approximately 9:40 p.m. local time,” Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Charlene Lamb told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in written testimony submitted Oct. 10.

About 25 minutes after the attack started—at 4:05 p.m. Washington, D.C. time—the State Department sent an email that went to multiple recipients, including two at the White House and one at the Pentagon.

The subject line on this email said: “U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi Under Attack.” The text of the email said: “The Regional Security Officer reports the diplomatic mission is under attack. Embassy Tripoli reports approximately 20 armed people fired shots; explosions have been heard as well. Ambassador Stevens, who is currently in Benghazi, and our COM personnel are in the compound safe haven.” It went on to say: “The Operations Center will provide updates as available.”
In her testimony to the Oversight Committee, Charlene Lamb indicated that soon after the attack started, she was able to monitor it from Washington, D.C., in “almost real time.”

“When the attack began, a Diplomatic Security agent working in the Tactical Operations Center immediately activated the Imminent Danger Notification System and made an emergency announcement over the PA,” Lamb testified. “Based on our security protocols, he also alerted the annex U.S. quick reaction security team stationed nearby, the Libyan 17th February Brigade, Embassy Tripoli, and the Diplomatic Security Command Center in Washington. From that point on, I could follow what was happening in almost real-time.”…

When exactly did Obama learn that the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi was under attack and whom did he order to do something about it? The White House is not saying….

Fred Lucas of CNSNews.com asked the White House on both Monday and Tuesday to reveal exactly when Obama learned the U.S. mission in Benghazi was under attack and who exactly Obama directed to “make sure that we are securing our personnel” there.

The White House did not respond.”…

Nashua Telegraph endorses Mitt Romney for President, Obama doesn’t deserve 4 more years, certainly not based on a last minute 20 page brochure

.
10/31/12, Mitt Romney for President, Nashua Telegraph

Four years ago, with little hesitation, we endorsed then-Sen. Barack Obama to become the 44th president of the United States, saying it was a time for “new leadership, a new approach to governing, a new way of conducting the people’s business.”

So the basic question facing The Telegraph editorial board when it met last week came down to this: Did the former Illinois senator do enough to live up to those admittedly high expectations to warrant a second term?

After several hours of spirited debate, not unlike conversations taking place in kitchens and living rooms across America, we reached a consensus that he had not. Perhaps more importantly, when we identified the key challenges facing the nation – jobs, the economy and the national debt – we
concluded he was not the best candidate to meet them.

That person is former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and we hereby endorse him to become the 45th president of the United States.

During his many years in the private and public sectors, Romney has demonstrated the critical leadership skills necessary to bring people together toward a common goal.

He did it when he founded a successful investment firm at age 37. He did it when he helped rescue a scandal-plagued Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002. And he did it when he worked with an overwhelmingly Democratic Legislature after being elected governor of Massachusetts that same year.

As we noted when we endorsed Romney for the GOP nomination prior to the New Hampshire primary in January, Washington is broken. In order to fix it, it will take a strong leader willing to roll up his sleeves and work directly with the heads of both parties to carve out the best possible solutions.

We believe Romney has demonstrated that he can do that; the president has had four years to demonstrate that he can’t….

But true leaders find ways to work around such obstacles, much like Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton did during their terms in office.

True leaders also don’t wait until two weeks before Election Day – in the form of a 20-page booklet, no less – to lay out a specific agenda for the next four years. Coupled with the negative tenor of the campaign, that merely confirms the president and his strategists felt that attacking Romney’s agenda was more politically expedient than releasing one of their own.

Some cynics have suggested, only partly in jest, that Obama-Romney is at its core a contest between a man with no plan and man with a plan that doesn’t add up, a reference to Romney’s own unwillingness to lay out details of how he would balance his campaign promises with his tax-and-spending plans.

Nevertheless, we are confident Romney is the candidate who would tackle the serious issues facing this nation, starting with jobs, the economy and the debt. In the end, we couldn’t say the same about the president.” via Free Republic

Republicans poised to add to their lead in governor’s races next week, competing in seats they haven’t won in decades

.
10/30/12, Republicans poised for gains in governor’s races,” AP, Mike Baker

Republicans are in position to extend their recent gains among governors as they compete for seats they haven’t won in a quarter-century.

Of the 11 states with gubernatorial elections in November, eight are now led by Democrats, and each of the most competitive races is a GOP pickup opportunity. The numbers suggests that Republicans soon will claim 30 to 33 governorships after holding just 22 a few years ago — an advantage not reflected in the divided Congress or competitive presidential race.

“It says that when people are choosing the government closest to the people, they’re choosing Republicans,” Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, said in an interview. “They realize the CEO of the state has got to be someone who’s fiscally conservative and is going to focus on jobs.”

North Carolina, the most likely state to flip, is trending toward a Republican governor for the first time since 1988. In Washington state, which hasn’t chosen a GOP governor in more than three decades, new polls show a toss-up….

Republicans already have the advantage among governors, holding 29 states. Victories in North Carolina and the three toss-up states could push that number to 33, the highest since the 1920s. The party had 32 governors in the 1990s.”…via Lucianne

.

KUSA TV reporter Kyle Clark spoke for 300 million voiceless Americans when he asked Obama why we should have to wait until after the election for the results of his Benghazi ‘investigation.’ Obama will have more ‘flexibility’ then just as he will with the Russians

.
Obama has had video of the Benghazi attacks since day 1. He has lied every day for 7 weeks. He classified the tapes so no one can see them. This would be on page 1 of the NY Times every day were Obama a Republican. The GOP is too afraid of being criticized by the media to do what’s necessary to see the tapes.

10/29/12, “McGurn: The Fog of Obama’s Non-War,” “Seven weeks after a U.S. ambassador was murdered and there are still no answers.” WSJ, Bill McGurn

Mitt Romney had it only half right when he attempted in the second presidential debate to score Barack Obama for his reluctance to concede that Benghazi was a terrorist attack. The real issue is not how long the president took to call the assault on the U.S. consulate an “act of terror”—but that he still has not called it an act of war.

Plainly this is no oversight. On “The Late Show with David Letterman” a week after the attack—late-night television having become our commander in chief’s preferred venue for addressing the great public issues—Mr. Letterman asked President Obama directly whether the Benghazi attack was an act of war, one that meant we were at war. Mr. Obama said “no”—and went on to say that terrorists had attacked not only the Benghazi compound but a “variety of our embassies.”

There was a reason for that addendum, and, as odd as it may seem, a logic. As anyone who has been part of a White House communications team knows, words are chosen (and un-chosen) for a reason. In President Obama’s case, calling a textbook act of war by its rightful name would undermine a foreign policy based on a single idea: He’s the man who gets us out of wars, not into them.

Scour the president’s speeches and you will find that war is either something he has ended (Iraq), is ending responsibly (Afghanistan), or is helping us to “turn the page on.” In like manner, Mr. Obama suggests that war is something from the George W. Bush era, telling crowds that a vote for Mr. Romney means going “back to a foreign policy that takes us into wars with no plan to get out.” As for the president’s surrogates who are now on television trying to answer embarrassing questions about why the help that Americans pleaded for in Benghazi never came, the solitary reference to war has been
  • to the “fog of war.”
The point is that for all the administration’s complaints about opponents “politicizing” Benghazi (this from a White House that leaked politically helpful but nonetheless sensitive details about the raid on bin Laden), the logic of
  • the president’s response to Benghazi has been political from the start.
Libya was supposed to be the Obama success story, showing how this president achieves our goals abroad without committing American troops or treasure.”…
(continuing): “However ridiculous it might have been to blame the whole thing on a YouTube video, politically the tactic was far preferable to admitting that the president who boasts about getting us out of war in Iraq and Afghanistan might have a whole new one brewing in Libya.

Now those political choices are coming back to bite him. Sooner or later (though perhaps not in time to affect the election), the conflicting stories about Benghazi that we are now hearing from key players will bring down the president’s political narrative.

Start with the Central Intelligence Agency, whose spokesman declared in an Oct. 26 statement that “no one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need.” In Beltwayspeak this means: The buck stopped somewhere between the Pentagon and the White House.

At the Pentagon, meanwhile, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says that because there was not enough real-time information available about the attack, “Gen. [Carter] Ham, and Gen. [Martin] Dempsey and I felt very strongly that we could not put forces at risk in that situation.” Mr. Panetta’s problem is that a Utah congressman who visited Libya is saying that Gen. Ham told him that forces were in place to move but he never got the order. Adding to the intrigue was the announcement earlier this month that Gen. Ham will be replaced as head of the U.S. Africa Command. On Monday, Gen. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, said that Gen. Ham’s reassignment from the Africa command was not because of Libya.

As for President Obama, just as he told Russia’s leaders that he would have more “flexibility about missile defense after the election, he now tells the American people that he will be freer to speak about Benghazi after Nov. 6, when the results of the investigation are (conveniently) scheduled to be delivered. So long as the only questioners Mr. Obama faced before the election were late-night comics and the incurious national press corps,
  • that might have been the end of it.
Last Friday, however, KUSA-TV reporter Kyle Clark in Denver put it to the president simply and directly in a satellite interview: “Were the Americans under attack at the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, denied requests for help during that attack? And is it fair to tell Americans that what happened is under investigation and we’ll all
  • find out after the election?
Mr. Obama replied, but he didn’t answer the questions.“…

Don’t you think the Obama Administration should release that video so that the American people can see for themselves what REALLY happened and not what the Obama Administration tried to feed them in the weeks after the terrorist attack?   They won’t release the tape – in fact, they are hiding the video tape from you by classifying it so that it remains out of our reach.

Endorsed Obama in 2008, endorsing Romney in 2012

10/28/12, “Endorsement: The case for Mitt Romney for president,” Chicago Daily Herald Editorial

Ultimately, we endorse Romney because he, unlike Obama, understands that jobs are a creation of business, not of government. And that to encourage job growth, we need policies that incent business to grow and provide it with a stable environment for that growth.

In the end, we need moderation, not ideology, to facilitate an economic recovery. It is the central issue that affects us all….

Obama cannot escape the burden of his share of culpability.

At a time when the economy was wracked, he chose instead to focus on health care reform. In doing so, his administration chose early on to fight with Congress rather than to work with it. He chose to force his landmark health care bill through Congress without a single Republican vote, significantly contributing to the bitter atmosphere of division in Washington.

His economic initiatives have been heavily bent toward the public sector, a big spending approach that has been aptly derided by Romney as “trickle-down government.”

And however well intended his belief that the Bush tax cuts should be ended for upper-income brackets, his $250,000 benchmark has been remarkably low, as many two-income families and small business owners and others in the suburbs can attest.

More pointedly, we are disappointed in the tone of Obama’s relentless insinuations that wealthy Americans refuse to pay their fair share. That tone is divisive and damaging for the nation and for our economy. It creates villains and victims, and unfairly so.”…via Free Republic

Abandoned and murdered Americans at CIA annex in Benghazi fought for over 6 hrs. wounded and dripping blood, their machine gun encrusted with blood, blood now on Obama’s hands. Millions of very much alive Osama’s out there don’t exactly buy Obama’s claim that killing bin Laden saved Americans from terrorism. But don’t tell Americans the truth because that’s ‘politicizing’ and only Obama and the media are allowed to ‘politicize’

.
10/25/12, “Benghazi Consulate Could Have Used Marines With Bayonets,” IBD Editorial

More than six hours after terrorists attacked our consulate, former Navy SEALs manned a blood-soaked machine gun to defend U.S. territory. Meanwhile Apache helicopters sat on the ground in Italy.

At 4 a.m. local time on Sept. 11 — six hours and 20 minutes after the initial attack beganformer Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed at the CIA annex not far from the consulate by a mortar shell. The machine gun they were firing was encrusted with blood, an indication they continued to fight after being wounded.

During that eternity, Woods and Doherty might have wondered between gunfire and explosions where the military, with bases strewn across Europe, was. U.S. forces were indeed being moved like chess pieces as the attack unfolded, but none came to their aid because no one gave the order.

President Obama, perhaps preoccupied with his upcoming Las Vegas fundraiser, met with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Vice President Joe Biden in the Oval Office at 5 p.m. ET, a little more than an hour after the onset of the attack.

He could have given the order but did not, even after an email, in which the al-Qaida-tied group Ansar al-Sharia claimed responsibility, arrived at 6:07 p.m. ET to a distribution list that included the White House Situation Room.

A Special Operations force went from central Europe to Naval Air Station Sigonella in southern Italy, just 480 miles from Benghazi. F-16s and Apache helicopters remained parked and unused at Aviano Air Base in northern Italy. Two Navy destroyers already in the Mediterranean Sea were moved off the coast of Libya on the day of the attack but were never used.

The question is: Why not?

Some suggest that sending nearby AC-130 gunships or Apaches would have been futile because in the chaos they couldn’t have identified the attackers and might have hit innocents. A few well-timed machine gun bursts at nowhere in particular would have been sufficient to disperse the jihadists.

We know there was no protest mob in the way and certainly we could have plucked those two heroic SEALs off the annex roof.

But to send help would have acknowledged it was a terrorist attack. It would have destroyed Team Obama’s campaign mantra that Osama bin Laden was dead, al-Qaida was destroyed and the Arab Spring was in full bloom. Better to blame a filmmaker and his obscure video.” via Free Republic

10/29/12, White House press: Aren’t you worried that Mitt Romney will politicize the hurricane?” Charlie Spiering, Washington Examiner

During a weekend press gaggle aboard Air Force One, White House reporters were naturally concerned about Hurricane Sandy and questioned the White House Press staff about the president’s hurricane preparations.

But one reporter was anxious to know if they were prepared for Mitt Romney.

Are you worried about the possible politicization of the storm response?” the reporter asked. “We’re a week out from the election.  Governor Romney might say something about how you guys are responding to it or going to rallies and that stuff.”

“Well, I don’t want to predict what Governor Romney may or may not say,” Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest answered.”…via Free Republic

But, more than that, it puts the spotlight on President Obama as a leader in a time of crisis – both in terms of deeds and words. Disturbing Obama Benghazi performance one of reasons cited by Iowa newspaper in not endorsing Obama for president

.
10/28/12, "Gazette endorsement for president: Romney," Gazette Editorial (Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 2nd largest newspaper in Iowa)

"But where the nation was most in need — restarting the economy and making significant progress on reducing our enormous national debt that recently soared past $16 trillion and dangerously threatens our future well-beingthe president and his administration have come up short.

And more recently, the ever-changing account of how his administration has responded to and explained — or hasn’t — the assassination of a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya is raising troublesome doubts about the chain of command and whether there’s been a cover-up.

Most important, we think Mitt Romney’s business savvy, understanding of the nation and world’s financial ins and outs, and leadership skills proven in public venues are more likely to ignite a robust economic recovery in the next four years."...via Lucianne

10/27/12, “What the Obama Administration does not want you to see,GretaWire, Greta Van Susteren, Fox News

There were many security cameras at the Benghazi US Consulate.  One camera was positioned to (and did) record Ambassador Stevens, on September 11, saying good night at 8:40pm Libya time to a Turkish Diplomat.

The video from this camera I am told – shows (and proves) there was NO PROTEST outside our Consulate.  The Obama Administration had that tape immediately and they knew what it showed and knew it immediately.  Anyone who watched the video observed the obvious.

Frankly, that is the oldest trick in the book – classify it.  They don’t want you to see the tape and they don’t want you to know what THEY KNEW RIGHT AWAY.

The Obama Administration doesn’t even have to release the entire tape (although they should) — I just want to see the few minutes before our Ambassador and the Turkish Diplomat walked out of the Consulate….and a few minutes after the Turkish Diplomat leaves and the Ambassador returns insides.

If the Obama Administration won’t release the video how about still frames from the video?
How could they deny the American people at least that now?

Releasing the video (or stills from the video) now would in no way jeopardize the Obama Administration’s internal investigation.  The video is what the video is.  If someone appears in the who might have reason not to have his identity disclosed (security), his of her face can be blurred. That is simple.

Release the video would be a good faith showing that the White House is not hiding anything and really does believe in the transparency the President promised when he ran in 2008….

Richmond Times-Dispatch endorses Mitt Romney, endorsed Obama in 2008. "It is with considerable urgency time to change….Repeal of ObamaCare may be most effective stimulus….Instead of post-partisan, Obama has been most partisan president"

.
10/28/12, “Prudent Change: Romney promises hope for recovery,” Richmond Times-Dispatch Editorial

The tone of the 2012 campaign might best be captured by the need to begin with an emphasis on what the Republican candidate will not do. Mitt Romney will not raise taxes on the middle class. He will not destroy Medicare. And he will not lie to the American people every time he opens his mouth.

Political campaigns exaggerate grossly, play loose with the facts and cast the opposition in the worst light imaginable. Yet it is difficult to recall a campaign less truthful than President Obama’s in 2012. Its foundation rests on deeply misleading assertions about Romney, a strategy made inevitable by the current administration’s weak record.

Barack Obama’s accomplishments are too few to merit re-election. So he attacks.

His offense is intended to distract from policies that have led to nearly four years of economic stagnation, stubbornly high unemployment, collapsing middle-class incomes, increasing rates of poverty, rising prices for life’s most basic necessities — and shrinking American influence around the globe.

Obama has proven, in Americans’ real-world experience, that massive government spending, suffocating regulatory expansion, feckless diplomacy and exploding debt do not foster peace and prosperity. Quite the opposite. It is — with considerable urgency — time to change.

*****
The Obama campaign has chosen a novel approach, claiming, in essence, that the Republican nominee means nothing that he says, except when it serves the needs of the incumbent. Thus, the relentless palaver about higher taxes and crashing entitlements, all delivered under the deceptive cover of “bipartisan” studies and “impossible” math. And then there’s the master of smirk, Joe Biden, hanging around just for laughs.

In the service of accuracy, let’s look at the generally straightforward proposals and philosophy espoused by Romney, who strikes us as both more earnest and more accomplished than your average presidential candidate.

Romney understands the value of free enterprise, appreciates its utterly unique ability to alleviate poverty, unleash creative endeavor, spread wealth and lift the burden of ceaseless backbreaking labor. In this year’s presidential campaign, he is alone in that respect.

Romney’s plan to spur economic growth — a phrase that seems absent from the Obama vocabulary — offers a plausible and pragmatic path to a more energized private sector, the essential element in reviving a robust economy that builds jobs, raises individual incomes, rewards innovation and halts the suicidal expansion of public debt.
He promises to:
  • use America’s abundant energy resources to drive growth;
  • cut the deficit by reducing federal spending to 20 percent of the economy or less;
  • open new markets overseas for American goods and services while defending U.S. interests abroad;
reform and simplify the tax code by lowering rates for individuals and businesses while eliminating deductions and exemptions that distort economic decisions, slow growth and favor the politically powerful.

These statements of principle are sound and strike an important contrast with Obama.

*****
Romney will improve a dysfunctional tax system, as did Ronald Reagan, to encourage work, investment and risk-taking. Less complexity means less corruption and cronyism. By contrast, Obama claims a $60 billion annual tax increase on higher-income Americans, including successful small businesses, will magically erase trillion-dollar deficits while providing extra cash for education, medicine, research and all-around middle-class happiness.

Obama pretends that Republican reformers pose the only real threats to Medicare and Medicaid. Romney acknowledges that these programs face forced marches to bankruptcy unless someone has the courage to fix them. He promises to examine means-testing, market solutions, competition and state-level innovation. His is a progressive approach.

Romney also promises to repeal Obamacare a singularly necessary step to restore America’s entrepreneurial spirit — and replace it with reforms that will not bust the budget, not trample individual rights, not undermine the independence of patients and medical professionals. Turns out, an economic crisis is no time to insist on an overwhelming and incoherent government program that does little to solve problems but much to suppress job-creation. Repeal may be the most effective stimulus package passed in nearly a decade.

* * * * *
National security ranks as any president’s first duty to his countrymen. Obama’s record on foreign affairs, while perhaps less disturbing than his dismal performance on domestic matters, nevertheless fails to inspire confidence. Romney’s analysis at VMI earlier this month is accurate:

“The president is fond of saying that ‘The tide of war is receding.‘ And I want to believe him as much as anyone. But when we look at the Middle East today — with Iran closer than ever to nuclear weapons capability, with the conflict in Syria threatening to destabilize the region, with violent extremists on the march, and with an American ambassador and three others dead likely at the hands of al-Qaida affiliates — it is clear that the risk of conflict in the region is higher now than when the president took office.”

And Romney correctly diagnoses the root cause of Obama’s failure to make the world safer for Americans and for liberty:

“I believe that if America does not lead, others will — others who do not share our interests and our values — and the world will grow darker, for our friends and for us. America’s security and the cause of freedom cannot afford four more years like the last four years. I am running for president because I believe the leader of the free world has a duty, to our citizens, and to our friends everywhere, to use America’s great influence — wisely, with solemnity and without false pride, but also firmly and actively — to shape events in ways that secure our interests, further our values, prevent conflict, and make the world better — not perfect, but better.”

This is the right approach, expressed with the appropriate mix of confidence, clarity and humility. Romney is ready to take command, as he demonstrated in Monday’s debate.

* * * * *
Four years ago, Barack Obama’s campaign and election generated remarkable pride and optimism, even among many of those who did not vote for him. He seemed filled with promise.

But his presidency has been filled with disappointment and failure. Those issues that inspired the most passion among his supporters — principally having to do with the war powers of the executive and the tension between civil liberty and national security — have been the ones on which his promise-breaking has been most feckless.

Obama’s policies have paralyzed our country’s economy and pushed its budget to the brink of catastrophe. Our allies abroad are nervous, our enemies encouraged. And yet the president offers no change and little hope. His campaign has hit a single endless negative note, one that ultimately rings false.

Perhaps most disappointing has been the president’s divisive rhetoric and his inability to forge alliances with the opposing party to find solutions. Republicans share the blame for the angry tone in American politics, but it was Obama who pledged just four years ago to bridge the gap between red and blue, liberal and conservative. Instead, the man who sold himself as our first post-partisan president has proved to be our most partisan president.

During the debates, the president’s personal attacks on his opponent were, most often, met with strong but dignified answers. The president showed himself to be the less presidential of the two contenders. As a result, we know now who is better suited to lead a great but troubled nation.

Mitt Romney has succeeded as a family man, governor, entrepreneur, Olympic leader. He is a man of character, a problem-solver, a turnaround specialist. He has earned our enthusiastic endorsement. America needs President Romney.” via Free Republic
