4,000 US soldiers from armored and infantry units will participate, with 2,000 Polish soldiers by their side. The exercise, which should have taken place in May, has been postponed because, due to the Covid-19, the Defender-Europe 20 has been partially modified. But, specifies the US Army Europe, when in March the dispatch of forces from the United States was suspended, “more than 90% of the equipment intended for the Defender-Europe 20 was already on board of planes and ships heading to Europe.” In total, more than 3,000 pieces of equipment arrived, starting with tanks, to which were added more than 9,000 armored vehicles and other vehicles coming from “pre-positioned” depots than the US Army. maintains in Germany.

The Allied Spirit is thus the first of a series of exercises in the same clearly anti-Russia strategic framework. It is no coincidence that it takes place in Poland. It is there – as stated in the Declaration signed by President Trump with Polish President Duda last September – that the United States is greatly increasing its military presence. The number of soldiers who are kept there permanently, with a rotation system, is increased from 4,500 to 5,500. 

In Poznan the US Army installs its own division headquarters on forward base. At Drawsko Pomorskie the US Armed Forces are opening a Combat Training Center. At Wrocław-Strachowice the US Air Force is carrying out a large airport landing stopover. At Lask the US Air Force deploys a squadron of unmanned aircraft, including Reaper drones. At Powidz, an air combat brigade. 

In Powidz as in Lubliniec, the US Forces for special operations constitute their own bases. In a locality which remains to be defined, the combat squadron of a US armored brigade will be permanently deployed. All the equipment is already stored in Bergen-Hohne in Germany. 

The US Army Europe further reports that the 173rd Airborne Brigade, based in Vicenza, is planning operations in the Balkans and the Black Sea region, while the 10th Air Defense and Missile Command will participate in exercises in the Baltic. 

The US Air Force reports that the three types of US conventional and nuclear dual-capacity strategic bombers — B-2 Spirit, B-1B Lancer and B-52H— completed in May, departing from the United States, missions in Europe. This demonstrated that “the Covid-19 pandemic did not compromise the speed and range of the strategic US bombers.”

These facts, ignored by the mainstream media which had announced in March the cancellation of the Defender-Europe 20 because of the Covid-19, confirm that the USA did not delete but only reshaped the strategic operation, by extending it. Washington’s objective remains to increase tension with Russia by using Europe as the first line of confrontation.
