“London Mayor Sadiq Khan has pledged an extra £1.5 million to house domestic abuse victims fleeing home in London. The Mayor’s office claims accommodation has been secured for 82 victims amid a spike in domestic abuse reports since the coronavirus outbreak began. Calls to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline have risen 25 per cent since the lockdown began on March 23, while 17,275 incidents were recorded by the Met police between March 9 and April 19. The Met’s figures represent a 9 per cent increase on the same time last year. Refuges and support services have struggled to find enough appropriate lodgings to meet the rise in demand…. 

The flats, many of which are large enough to house victims and their children, are being leased for six months with a potential renewal thereafter. Support is available for anyone needing to leave their homes for a variety of reasons including experiencing violence or controlling behaviour, forced marriage or being physically threatened by their child.”…
