McConnell "has raised 80% of the $20 million he has collected this
cycle outside Kentucky."
5/7/14, "EXCLUSIVE: U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell spends plenty of time in Manhattan while criticizing opponent’s trips," NY Daily News, Dan Friedman
"For a guy who is busy running the Republican side of the Senate and
fighting for reelection, Mitch McConnell spends a lot of time in
Manhattan.
The 72-year old Senate minority leader's campaign has faulted his
opponent, Democrat Alison Lundegran Grimes, 35, for lengthy fundraising
trips outside Kentucky in Hollywood and New York.
But McConnell himself has made New York's Marriott Downtown practically his third home.
He made at least six trips to the Big Apple in first three months of 2014, according to Federal Election Commission records.
He’s being bankrolled by fiscally conservative New York bankers.
The 2014 New York fundraisers netted McConnell more than $207,000 from
executives at American Express, General Electric, Moore Capital,
MetLife, Marsh & McLennan and Paulson & Co.
Such efforts have made New York, where McConnell has raised more than
$1 million, the most lucrative metro area for the Republican leader's
war chest, according to Center for Responsive Politics figures.
McConnell, who has raised 80% of the $20 million he has collected this
cycle outside Kentucky, is just the most powerful of dozens of GOP
candidates whose populist politicking doesn't stop them from fundraising
on Wall Street.
