2/6/14, "A Review of Reagan’s Revolution: The Untold Story Of The Campaign That Started It All," Jen Kuznicki
"Reagan announced his candidacy to challenge the incumbent Gerald Ford
on my third birthday. At three, I would not have known what the
Republican Party was or what it was doing, but (author Craig) Shirley filled me in.
“Following Nixon’s resignation in August of 1974
and Gerald Ford’s pardon of the ex-President, the Republican Party was
decimated in the fall elections.”
“Voters threw out dozens of Republican legislators in 1974. The GOP lost forty-three Representatives and four Senators in the
off-year elections.”
“By the spring of 1976, the Republican Party had only
thirty-eight U.S, Senators who could not even mount an effective
filibuster. In the House, they were outnumbered by better than two to
one. Only thirteen of the nation’s fifty Governors were Republicans.
The state legislatures were even worse.”
The Party was looking for leadership, and although you can’t parallel
then with now entirely, all through the book you get the recurring
thought: The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The establishment at the time was like the establishment is now, they
were just as feckless, and just as smug. The media were saying the
exact same thing then as they do now, that Conservatives don’t win, and
that the Republican Party must moderate and be bipartisan in their
approach. Conservatives were just as pissed now as they were then,
well, maybe a bit more now, but then…
Everything became more clear for me by reading this book, the times I
thought I was nuts for stepping into politics, I realized that it is
the fight for what is right that keeps all going forward and pushing and
influencing and working to spread not only the conservative message,
but to do so, as Reagan did, with bold colors, no pale pastels.
Reagan opposed the liberal stance of many of the Party’s leadership,
and he said so publicly and privately, and wrote reams about what was
the current approach and what would be his approach. He was always
writing, as Nancy would say, and they were always holding hands and
doting on one another reflecting a strong marriage.
There is a balance in the book between what would appeal to certain
cogs working within the party; the money side, the communications side,
the advance people, the writers, the deal makers, and what would appeal
to the policy stewards, the political officeholders, and the influential
media personalities. But the “story of the campaign that started it
all,” is the story you need to read, especially if you, like me, are
relatively new to politics, and you want to believe there will be a
Reagan-like leader once again.
Ever since I heard the words, “The era of Reagan is over,” I wondered
if there could be a way to reverse that line of thinking and that trend
in modern politics. After reading this book, I know that the era of
Reagan is not dead, and I see the parallels of today’s political
groundswells that got thousands of Republicans elected in 2010, because
the candidates ran on Reagan’s ideals. The Reagan revolution happened
and it was about the love of a particular person who was very
politically savvy and strong, but it also was about the approach to life
that is conservatism, and how it itself is timeless, and it can appeal
to all.
Since the Republican establishment has decided that the country wants
socialism and wants to be the party to hand it to them, the time is
ripe for a Reagan to step forward and perhaps we can witness another
political revolution and work to make everyone proud of our country once
again."

Comment: Sabotage Republicans are only happy when the GOP is in the minority. Thanks to Mark Levin's show I've heard some of Reagan's speeches which of course are wonderful. Unfortunately the ideas in his speeches had no chance of saving this country because he chose George H.W. Bush as his vice president. The Bush people have never wanted a two party system. They've always wanted the same top down massive central government control democrats favor. The Bush crowd's only ideology is being in charge of elections. They're obsessed with preventing us from getting the candidate we need.
