"Raiders wearing burkas stormed top department store Selfridges last night and grabbed a fortune in designer watches.

Six bandits armed with axes and sledgehammers smashed display cabinets in the jewellery section of the famed Oxford Street shop.

They grabbed £10,000 watches and gems, together worth hundreds of thousands, as staff and customers scattered in terror.
 
The gang then sped off on mopeds with their flowing black garments flapping in the wind — but one bike skidded and crashed, dumping two of the robbers on the road.

The pair, one pretending the other was his injured “wife”, were caught by have-a-go heroes. Pizza waiter Mohamed Hussein, 29, and a pub bouncer SAT on one of them until cops arrived with armed officers getting to the scene at around 8.30pm.

Brave Mohamed said: "I was outside the pizza restaurant where I work and saw a bike with two people on skid and crash. "The one on the back was wearing a burka and no helmet.

"I knew they were criminals because I recognised the scooter from a few days ago when my friend had his mobile phone stolen. "The man who'd been riding the scooter called out, 'Help my wife.' But I could tell straight away she wasn't a woman....

"I chased him for 60 or 70 metres then pinned him to the floor and pulled his helmet off. "He was wearing a burka underneath and I could only see his eyes.

"A bouncer from a pub came over to help. The robber tried to bite us and was shouting and swearing. "We sat on him for about ten minutes until the police came."

The gang — some carrying handbags as part of their disguise — struck with military precision at 8.30pm as Selfridges was holding a special beauty event.

A message was posted on the fashion giant's Twitter feed, read: "Hi, we justwant to let you know that everyone is safe and the police are investigating."

Another post today read: "Good morning, we would like to reassure you that the store is open for business as usual today. Thanks for all your support."

Witness Anuj Dabeesingh said: “I heard lots of glass smashing and saw a staff member lying on the ground.”
