If none of this mattered, people would have turned the US over to Communist China long ago (via our borrowing from them). Americans at one time didn't want to get overly involved with communist countries. Democrat President JFK made his name early by being "tough on communism" (para 2). That sounds funny today. Over time, it's possible to make people believe anything. American culture said come on in, we're tolerant, in fact we're dying to show you how tolerant we are. ed.
