Obama again compares debt ceiling to slavery, threatens Granny's social security and veterans benefits

"America, after all, has always been a grand experiment in compromise....but from slavery to war, from civil liberties to questions of economic justice"...(para. 29)

He made the same comparison (slavery to the debt limit) on July 22, at a Presidential Town Hall Meeting in Maryland.

"Obama: “If Abraham Lincoln could make some compromises [regarding freedom for some slaves] . . . then surely we can make some compromises when it comes

• to handling our budget”

On 7/22/11, Obama said the Emancipation Proclamation didn't free all slaves, that Lincoln allowed some Union territories to retain slaves. He says Lincoln later made compromises on the issue so surely we can do so regarding the budget. (He begins the segment talking about 'splintered' media)

In 7/25 speech, Obama again says he will cut off social security checks:

"If that happens, and we default, we would not have enough money to pay all of our bills – bills that include monthly Social Security checks, veterans' benefits..." (para. 18)
