2/19/15, "Tea Party News Network Staffers Resign en Masse, Citing ‘Despicable Practices’," MediaIte, by Tina Nguyen
"Today, a chunk of staffers from the Tea Party News Network, a news site with nearly 12 million unique visitors per month, sent in their resignations over the company’s “despicable practices.”
The resignation came soon after the publication of a Daily Beast exposé about the news outlet, which has seen incredible traffic numbers coupled with what its readers perceive as a decline in the quality of content, sometimes with little connection to tea party issues. (One recent headline: “Big Strutting Peacock Picks A Fight With The Wrong Guy.”)
The exposé also shone light on some of their business practices, such as the fact that the Tea Party News Network’s Facebook page regularly posted content from different websites, such as “Fights.buzz, which shows street altercations of the type that are banned from YouTube.” The sites are all owned by TPNN’s owner, Todd Cefaratti, and are all for-profit, while TPNN itself is a non-profit site.
This is a problem for the staff, some of whom sent a resignation letter to brass indicating this was the final straw. “Unfortunately the ‘coalition’ of companies and groups you collectively run has not been operating with the honor that people should be able to respect.”
Blasting the lack of transparency surrounding the revenue from the network’s Facebook page and the quality of the content they were forced to produce — “The Tea Party is not TMZ and TPNN is not WorldStar”, they declared — the group then turned to condemning their management skills:
You regularly show contempt for the people who make all your financial success possible. The staff who work around the clock to produce timely and breaking content is regularly reminded that “writers are cheap.” The audience is regarded as unsophisticated simpletons. The activisim that built all the infrastructure is considered a “pain in the ass” not as an opportunity to save the country. It’s a damning letter from staffers of a site that was described by tea party hero Joe “The Plumber” Wurzelbacher to the Daily Beast like this:
“I won’t click on those damn stories. It’s about the shock factor. It has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with clicks. How far are they willing to go to compromise their integrity? It makes me sick, it makes me angry. It makes me want to go kick someone’s ass.”The entire letter below:"...
From the letter:
"TheTeaParty.net Facebook page was built using non-profit dollars and resources and yet the hundreds of thousands of dollars a month being generated from traffic deriving from the non-profit Facebook page are being funneled to a for profit company with no transparency. Even if you could find a way to make that legal, it's immoral and unethical."...

Oct. 29, 2010, "Revealed: JoinTheTeaParty.us took $469,000 in donations, spent none of it on candidates," The Raw Story, by Stephen C. Webster
"A website run out of Arizona, ostensibly to support the so-called tea party movement, is under scrutiny after a local news organization dug into their finances and ownership, only to find what some may characterize as a remarkable scam.
According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) disclosure forms, JoinTheTeaParty.us took in approximately $469,000 in donations this year and spent roughly half its budget on marketing, with the rest going to distinctly non-political avenues.
In fact, according to CBS 5 in Phoenix, there’s no evidence the group spent so much as a dime to promote tea party candidates or related events.
FEC forms pulled by CBS affiliate show the group spent nearly $200,000 on search engine optimization and Google sponsorship, along with Facebook ads promoting their website. Submitting a Google search for “tea party” returned with the site atop the list of results.
They even advertised the site on Craigslist, with an impassioned appeal to “patriots” who may be sympathetic to conservative causes. Ironically enough, the ad states numerous times that this group in particular is a “marketing campaign” with a fundraising goal of $500,000 per week.
The domain is owned by Todd Cefaratti, an Arizona businessman with a background in data collection. His other business specializes in mining contact information and reselling the leads to clients in the reverse mortgage industry.
“Thousands” of donors have given their personal contact information and credit card numbers to the tea party site, according to CBS.
In spite of the obvious political implications of calling a group part of the tea party, which is not an official organization or political party, Cefaratti’s website is run by “Stop This Insanity, Inc.,” a 501(c)4 organization — meaning, they are not a solely political organization and they’re exempt from federal income taxes."...

More on TheTeaParty.net:
3/9/14, "Invisible King Makers: OH Rep. Candidate Gurr Talks About The TeaParty.net Leadership Fund," Lee Stranahan
"Do real grassroots candidates have a chance?
I just interviewed Ohio congressional candidate Eric Gurr, who is challenging John Boehner in the May primary.
If you’re following my reporting on TheTeaParty.net Leadership Fund there are number of interesting details about the difference between the real Tea Party groups in Ohio and how highly financed The TeaParty.net Leadership Fund came into Ohio and dealt with candidates.
Among the details in this interviews is the direct involvement of The TeaParty.net Leadership Fund treasurer (Dan Backer) in their ‘debate’ in Ohio. They also appear to have told Gurr he was too tough on immigration because he favored deportation.
You read that right. Interesting listening: it’s about 20 minutes long." (Audio link at site).
==========================
Summary of 20 minute March 9th, 2014 interview by Lee Stranahan with Ohio District 8 candidate Eric Gurr about how local Tea Party groups with no money were silenced by out of town junior version of Karl Rove, Dan Backer, and his so-called "Tea Party" PAC begins following Gurr Tweet below.
Backer is affiliated with many PACs. In the case of Ohio 8 the PAC is, "The Tea Party Leadership Fund," an "outgrowth of TheTeaParty.net."
Gurr's experience with Dan Backer led him to observe that the "Establishment Tea Party" is as bad as the Establishment GOP. Dan Backer simultaneously functions as the "Establishment Tea Party," Beltway insider, lawyer, lobbyist, PAC operator, and GOP Establishment advocate. He's such a good friend of the GOP Establishment that he placed an ad buy of over half a million dollars in May 2014 to defeat a Tea Party backed candidate in a Republican runoff election in Texas. (Backer's candidate Dan Branch lost in a landslide 64-36% to Ken Paxton).
Eric Gurr is a small business owner in Ohio and was among 5 candidates in the 2014 GOP Congressional primary campaign in Ohio's 8th district against John Boehner. The election was to be May 6. Relating events prior to the March 9, 2014 interview, Eric Gurr says he had heard from local people at one point that a big, out of town Tea Party group was taking control of the campaign. Gurr knew of Lee Stranahan's past reporting on the out of town group, Tea Party Leadership Fund, so called him to discuss the matter. Lee Stranahan is a former Breitbart reporter. Later that day, Eric Gurr and Lee met and recorded a 20 minute conversation.
Lee Stranahan says it's not generally known that a Tea Party Establishment "kingmaker" element exists that muscles out local groups. Candidate Eric Gurr hadn't heard of the "kingmaker" group, but a local TP person told him the group was coming to Ohio to get involved in the primary.
This outside group, The Tea Party Leadership Fund in the person of Dan Backer, ultimately selected JD Winteregg as the preferred candidate to oppose Boehner in the May 6 election. It's unlikely anyone would've beaten Boehner, but the quality of the candidate who would emerge as "The Tea Party candidate" was nevertheless important. Unfortunately Dan Backer of Virginia chose the Ohio "Tea Party candidate." The candidate, JD Winteregg made a joke of his candidacy and therefore of the Tea Party. His selection bolstered the claim that the TP runs "unvetted" candidates. 32 year old Winteregg was "never a serious challenger" and raised "a mere $48,000" compared to Boehner's millions. Dan Backer's group TPLF has millions but gave only $5000 directly to JD Winteregg. They gave $72,000+ to outside consultants for direct mail, phone, and radio production related to the so-called Winteregg campaign. If a candidate is going to lose under the TP name he should be chosen by local TP groups, not Dan Backer.
Continuing with the Stranahan interview summary, Eric Gurr was among the earliest of the five District 8 challengers to announce his candidacy. JD Winteregg announced shortly after he did sometime in January 2014. Others who filed included Matt Ashworth, Matt Tressler, and Don Carter.
5 or 6 local TP groups invited all 5 candidates to speak at town hall events early in the campaign, presumably in January and February. None of them had money to offer, were just concerned local citizens.
Eventually Eric received an email from someone in a local group saying they'd heard TPLF was coming to town to meet with candidates in the primary, had Eric heard about it? Eric hadn't. Sometime after that Eric heard that radio talk show host Rusty Humphries was in town on behalf of Dan Backer's TPLF, and was meeting with a local Tea Party activist at the person's home. Eric hadn't been invited but decided to show up anyway.
He talked to Rusty at the meeting but didn't hear anything from him after that. A couple of weeks later, a local person emailed Eric that the head of TPLF (Dan Backer) was coming to town to run a debate and a poll.
Again, Gurr hadn't heard anything about this, looked into it and found only one person had been invited to the "debate"--JD Winteregg. Gurr obtained an invitation for himself, so now a total of two people were at the TPLF "debate."
The night of the "debate and poll," both Dan Backer and Rusty Humphries were there but it was clear Dan Backer was in charge. No one else representing TPLF was there. Backer had said people would be able to vote for their preferred candidate after the debate. Backer set up rules for "voting." People who came in at the end of the debate who'd heard little or nothing from the speakers were still allowed to "vote" under Backer's rules. Apparently Winteregg got 8 more votes.
To add to Backer's mockery of citizens across America who take precious time away from normal responsibilities because they have serious concerns about elected officials and government, the fake Tea Party "debate" was preceded by a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Gurr didn't mention this in the interview, I observed it on the video.
Gurr says after the "debate," a meeting took place in a small room. In attendance were Dan Backer and Rusty Humphries and the two candidates, Eric Gurr and JD Winteregg. Gurr had never met Backer before. Backer was in charge and did all the talking.
He looked at JD Winteregg and asked him if he'd consider dropping out, said he seemed undisciplined. Winteregg said, no he wouldn't drop out.
Backer, pictured above, turned to Eric Gurr and said he wasn't a good candidate either, that he didn't understand the issues. Then Backer said, "We're going to put some money in the race and endorse."
[They gave only $5000 directly to JD Winteregg.]
About 3 days later, Rusty Humphries called Gurr and said, "We decided to go with JD Winteregg, we thought he had a better ground game, we got a lot of emails about him. Your stance on immigration was a little rough, Democrats would call you a Nazi." This apparently referred to Gurr's merely stating existing law, that there was precedent for deporting illegal aliens. Gurr told Humphries that was fine, it was their money to do with as they pleased.
The next day, Dan Backer called Eric Gurr, told him that Wintergg "had a much better ground game and would be a better political candidate." He also told Gurr, "you'd be a better congressman but Winteregg's a better campaigner." Backer told Gurr they "made the decision on the plane ride home."
On the You Tube video of the debate, Rusty Humphries said the winner would be determined by a combination of "what you have to say, what the candidates have to say," "then on a national level we'll decide" who we're going with. (Approx. 8-8:30 in on video).
Eric says two of the 5 candidates ended up dropping out and endorsing him (Gurr) one of which was Matt Ashworth. Eric asked the two if they'd ever heard from TPLF and they said no.
In the course of the interview Lee Stranahan mentions that radio host Rusty Humphies has been associated with TPLF for awhile and did "Draft Sarah Palin" ads for them though Stranahan says he's found no actual connection between Sarah Palin and the group, that the group regularly runs fundraising campaigns using various popular names and issues. He says TPLF had raised 3 and a half million so far in 2014 but only spent about 10% of it on issues or candidates. They've spent some money on ads bashing Boehner.

3/5/14, "How Tea Party Donor Money Went To Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn," Lee Stranahan
"Follow the money. How did $20,000 in donations that people thought was going to the “Tea Party Movement” end up in the hands of establishment Republicans Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn?
The transactions don’t show up on the TeaParty.net Leadership Fund list of candidate expenses. It’s all a matter of public record but it’s been hidden by diverting it through a JFC or Joint Fundraising Committee.
The story was even reported back in 2013 by Roll Call, but went largely unnoticed and Roll Call didn’t catch the connection of attorney Dan Backer to so many groups involved. Roll Call wrote:
A national tea party committee, the Tea Party Leadership Fund (formerly known as the TeaParty.Net Leadership Fund), a hybrid PAC with a noncontribution account, based in Alexandria, Va., contributed $40,000 in May to In Defense of Free Speech JFC, a joint fundraising committee set up in May. The $53,800 in proceeds were split between four candidates, with each getting $13,450. The candidates were McConnell, Cruz, Lee and John Cornyn, R-Texas. The McConnell Senate Committee ’14 was sent $10,950 on June 29 and $2,500 on June 25.Follow the steps used to send Tea Party donor money to Cornyn and McConnell and note all the connections to Dan Backer and don’t take my word for it: click the links.
When people are urged to donate to The TeaParty.net Leadership Fund, they are told their money to support the Tea Party Movement. Here’s their donation page....
How did money end up in Mitch McConnell and Cornyn’s coffers?
One common link is Virginia attorney Dan Backer, who is the treasurer for The TeaParty.net Leadership Fund, who took in over $3.4 million in donations in this election cycle. Most of the money went to fundraising and ‘unclassifiable’ expenses.
One of the groups biggest expenditures was $40,000 to a group called In Defense of Free Speech JFC.
Defense of Free Speech JFC was originally set up by in 2013 by Dan Backer, who was also the group’s original treasurer. Laster, a woman named Christina Sirois–who works for Backer’s company DB Capitol Strategies–was named as treasurer. The group was dissolved in February, 2014.
In Defense of Free Speech JFC did one thing in its short life: gave $13,450 each to Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee.
Where did the money for the In Defense of Free Speech JFC group set up by Dan Backer come from?
- $40,000 came from The TeaParty.net Leadership Fund - Dan Backer, Treasurer
- $5000 came from Shaun McCutcheon, a client of Dan Backer’s
- $5000 came from a group called E Pluribus Unum PAC - Dan Backer, Treasurer. The group’s only purpose appears to have been to give $5000 to the In Defense of Free Speech JFC
- $5000 came from a man Richard Campbell — who was also the sole donor for the E Pluribus Unum PAC set up by Dan Backer
This means that John Cornyn’s $10,000 take was four times what Stockman.
Just follow the arrows on this flowchart I made."

May 23, 2014, "‘Tea Party Lawyer' Behind Attacks Against Texas Tea Party AG Candidate," Breitbart, Brandon Darby
"Dan Backer, the D.C. area attorney widely known for his work with TheTeaParty.net, has come forward as the one responsible for attacking Texas Attorney General candidate State Senator Ken Paxton in a massive half-million dollar Texas ad-buy. Ken Paxton is the Tea Party candidate who Senator Ted Cruz proudly honored. A media professional who works with TheTeaParty.net told Breitbart Texas that the group has no part in what their attorney is doing.
Paxton’s opponent, the clear beneficiary of Backer’s ads, is Texas State Rep. Dan Branch. Branch is a former AFL-CIO union group lobbyist who previously introduced an amendment to a bill that could have expanded the medical authority of abortionists to broaden the use of late-term abortions in Texas....
Chuck Lindell of The Austin-American Statesman wrote on Backer introducing money into Texas politics from Virginia, “A Virginia nonprofit has poured more than a half-million dollars into a new TV ad that sharply criticizes Texas attorney general candidate Ken Paxton....
The Statesman also wrote, “Airing in the closing days of the Republican runoff campaign in at least seven markets, including Austin, the 30-second spot was created by American Dream Initiative, a relatively new organization that advocates for ‘small, efficient government that is honorable and ethical and not overreaching,’ Chairman Dan Backer said Thursday.”...
Backer reportedly refused to reveal to the Statesman who funded the ad-buy and how he raised the money, instead indicating that he technically avoided advocating for a candidate and therefore stayed within law. This is not the first controversial issue Backer has had surrounding fundraising in politics. Recently, Backer was involved in an effort that used an image of Ted Cruz and Benghazi to raise money, which brought quick rebuke from Cruz’s staff.
A core staff member for Senator Cruz spoke with Breitbart Texas and stated, “We said that we did not authorize Senator Cruz’s name to be used on any such material and reached out to the group to ask them to remove his name from any of their materials used for that purpose.”
The debacle surrounding Backer’s fundraising using Senator Cruz’s image does not stand alone. Recently, Backer came under fire for using Sarah Palin’s image in fundraising ads as well. Appealing to the Tea Party’s heavy percentage of elderly Americans, another effort Backer participated in urged Americans to fight socialism and draft Sarah Palin--even though Palin indicated she had no intention of running....
The recent polling suggests Branch’s attacks backfired, as Paxton now enjoys an even wider 17 point lead over Branch.
Though Branch and his left-leaning allies—and now Dan Backer with his secret donors—have what are seemingly unlimited funds to attack Paxton with ads, perhaps the most powerful political ad came free of charge for Paxton--from Senator Ted Cruz."....
