UK voters in petition drive to leave EU jet-setters, parasites, and bailout thugs in the dust

8/5/11, "CRUSADE FOR REFERENDUM ON EU GOES INTO OVERDRIVE," Express UK, Martyn Brown

"A DELUGE of support yesterday heralded the official launch of the Daily Express online petition calling for a referendum on EU membership.

People have signed up in droves to our campaign, which bids to force a vote on Britain leaving the European Union.

Within moments of the Government’s new directgov e-petitions website going live, three supporters a minute were adding their name. At one point the sheer number of people trying to get onto the website caused it to crash.

The fantastic response means we are on track to reach the 100,000 signatures needed for the campaign to be considered by the Government for a debate in Parliament.

The Daily Express has already gathered 75,000 signatures backing the call for a referendum on our own website and we are pressing the Government to add those names to the official petition. At the current rate of support our campaign is likely to be one of the first to be assessed by the cross-party Backbench Business Committee when it meets in September to decide petitions to be discussed in the Commons.

Joining our campaign will force the country’s politicians to discuss an issue that is gathering momentum as Britain bails out failing eurozone states and our laws are increasingly adversely affected by EU human rights restraints.

To ensure the argument is thrust to the heart of UK democracy, we are calling on the 375,000 people who backed this newspaper’s historic crusade in a postal coupon campaign earlier this year to add their names to the list.

In addition to the overwhelming public response, campaigners and MPs have expressed their support for us in driving the issue of winning freedom from Brussels interference

  • to the forefront of national debate."...
