“An apparently bugged phone conversation in which a senior US diplomat disparages the EU over the Ukraine crisis has been posted online. The alleged conversation between Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and the US Ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, appeared on YouTube on Thursday [Feb. 4, 2014]. It is not clearly when the alleged conversation took place.

Voice thought to be Pyatt’s: I think we’re in play. The Klitschko [Vitaly Klitschko, one of three main [pro-US coup] opposition leaders] piece is obviously the complicated electron here. Especially the announcement of him [Klitschko] as deputy prime minister and you’ve seen some of my notes on the troubles in the marriage right now so we’re trying to get a read really fast on where he is on this stuff. But I think your argument to him, which you’ll need to make, I think that’s the next phone call you want to set up, is exactly the one you made to Yats [Arseniy Yatseniuk, another opposition leader]. And I’m glad you sort of put him on the spot on where he fits in this scenario. And I’m very glad that he said what he said in response. 

[Jonathan Marcus: The US says that it is working with all sides in the crisis to reach a peaceful solution, noting that “ultimately it is up to the Ukrainian people to decide their future”. However this transcript suggests that the US has very clear ideas about what the outcome should be and is striving to achieve these goals….Washington clearly has its own game-plan.] 

Nuland: Good. I don’t think Klitsch should go into the government. I don’t think it’s necessary, I don’t think it’s a good idea. 

Pyatt: Yeah. I guess… in terms of him not going into the government, just let him stay out and do his political homework and stuff. I’m just thinking in terms of sort of the process moving ahead we want to keep the moderate democrats together. The problem is going to be Tyahnybok [Oleh Tyahnybok, the other opposition leader] and his guys and I’m sure that’s part of what [President Viktor] Yanukovych is calculating on all this. 

Nuland: [Breaks in] I think Yats is the guy who’s got the economic experience, the governing experience. He’s the… what he needs is Klitsch and Tyahnybok on the outside. He needs to be talking to them four times a week, you know. I just think Klitsch going in… he’s going to be at that level working for Yatseniuk, it’s just not going to work. 

Pyatt: Yeah, no, I think that’s right. OK. Good. Do you want us to set up a call with him as the next step? 

Nuland: My understanding from that call – but you tell me – was that the big three [Yats, Klitschko, and Tyahnybok] were going into their own meeting and that Yats was going to offer in that context a…three-plus-one conversation or three-plus-two with you. Is that not how you understood it? 

Pyatt: No. I think… I mean that’s what he proposed but I think, just knowing the dynamic that’s been with them where Klitschko has been the top dog, he’s going to take a while to show up for whatever meeting they’ve got and he’s probably talking to his guys at this point, so I think you reaching out directly to him helps with the personality management among the three and it gives you also a chance to move fast on all this stuff and put us behind it before they all sit down and he explains why he doesn’t like it. 

Nuland: OK, good. I’m happy. Why don’t you reach out to him and see if he wants to talk before or after. 

Pyatt: OK, will do. Thanks. 

Nuland: OK… one more wrinkle for you Geoff. [A click can be heard] I can’t remember if I told you this, or if I only told Washington this, that when I talked to Jeff Feltman [United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs] this morning, he had a new name for the UN guy Robert Serry did I write you that this morning? 

[Jonathan Marcus:…Various officials attempting to marshal the Ukrainian [pro-US coup] opposition; efforts to get the UN to play an active role in bolstering a deal; and (as you can see below) the big guns waiting in the wings – US Vice-President Joe Biden clearly being lined up to give private words of encouragement at the appropriate moment.] 

Pyatt: Yeah I saw that. 

Nuland: OK. He’s now gotten both Serry and [UN Secretary General] Ban Ki-moon to agree that Serry could come in Monday or Tuesday. So that would be great, I think, to help glue this thing and to have the UN help glue it and, you know, Fuck the EU. 

[Jonathan Marcus:…The EU is divided and to some extent hesitant about picking a fight with Moscow….But the US clearly is determined to take a much more activist role.] 

Pyatt: No, exactly. And I think we’ve got to do something to make it stick together….So let me work on Klitschko and if you can just keep… we want to try to get somebody with an international personality to come out here and help to midwife this thing…. 

Nuland: So on that piece Geoff, when I wrote the note [US vice-president’s [Biden] national security adviser Jake] Sullivan’s come back to me VFR [direct to me], saying you need [US Vice-President Joe] Biden and I said probably tomorrow for an atta-boy and to get the deets [details] to stick. So Biden’s willing. 

Pyatt: OK. Great. Thanks.” 

[Jonathan Marcus:…The US is clearly much more involved in trying to broker a deal in Ukraine than it publicly lets on. There is some embarrassment too for the Americans given the ease with which their communications were hacked [or leaked]….]"

The strategy, which Ukrainian news media are attributing to [oligarch] Yulia V. Tymoshenko, a former prime minister and party leader, is recognition that the oligarchs represent the country’s industrial and business elite, and exercise great influence over thousands of workers in the east….  

Ms. Tymoshenko, who met late Saturday with Mr. Turchynov and the prime minister, Arseniy P. Yatsenyuk, [“Yats is the guy”], who are both members of the Fatherland party that she leads, is a savvy operative in Ukrainian politics and was a wealthy businesswoman before entering politics in the late 1990s…. 

After the meeting, the [post-regime change] government began asking the oligarchs to take the positions in the regional governments…. 

The ultra-wealthy industrialists wield such power in Ukraine that they form what amounts to a shadow government, with empires of steel and coal, telecoms and media, and armies of workers. “The government is doing what it can to avoid provoking [see, government has no choice, it has to keep status quo, only difference is US puppet Yats is in charge] any internal divisions,” Steven Pifer, a former American ambassador to Ukraine who is now at the Brookings Institution, said in a telephone interview. “They need people who have credibility in eastern Ukraine. “Lieutenant General Abdul Wahab al-Saadi was the great Iraqi military hero of the war against [US, Saudi, and Qatar backed] Isis, leading the assault on Mosul which recaptured the de facto Isis capital after a nine-month siege in 2017. 

But at the weekend he was suddenly removed as the commander of the Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) shock troops, the elite corps of the Iraqi armed forces, by Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi. He was instead given what the general considered to be a non-job at the Defence Ministry.

During the last five days there have been protests all over the south of Iraq where the majority of the people are Shia. The protests escalated within a few days into shootings with over a hundred killed. In several cities party and government offices were burned and various groups hustle to take a position in the “leaderless” movement. 

There are legitimate reasons for protests. The majority of the people in Iraq is younger than 20 years. The people have little chance of finding a job. The state is weak and many of its actors are corrupt. Services the state is supposed to provide don’t get delivered. Electricity and water supply is often sparse. 

But those are not the reasons why the protests immediately escalated into violence:

5/ The most salient measure of inorganic activity is accounts created in a short time frame. Of the 6500 or so accounts in the sample, 1,118 were created in just 3 days – October 1st, 2nd and 3rd. That’s astounding – around 17% of the sample! #Iraq” 

The protests are part of the conflict between the U.S., its Saudi proxies, and Iran. 

The immediate aim is to bring down the government under Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi who strove to stay neutral in the conflict between the U.S./Israel/Saudi Arabia and Iran: 

“The recent decisions of Abdel Mahdi made him extremely unpopular with the US. He has declared Israel responsible for the destruction of the five warehouses of the Iraqi security forces, Hashd al-Shaabi, and the killing of one commander on the Iraqi-Syrian borders. He opened the crossing at al-Qaem between Iraq and Syria to the displeasure of the US embassy in Baghdad, whose officers expressed their discomfort to Iraqi officials. He expressed his willingness to buy the S-400 and other military hardware from Russia. Abdel Mahdi agreed with China to reconstruct essential infrastructure in exchange for oil, and gave a $284 million electricity deal to a German rather than an American company. The Iraqi Prime Minister refused to abide by US sanctions and is still buying electricity from Iran and allowing the exchange of commerce that is bringing large amounts of foreign currency and boosting the Iranian economy. And lastly, Abdel Mahdi rejected the “Deal of the Century” proposed by the US: he is trying to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia and therefore is showing his intention to keep away from the US objectives and policies in the Middle East.” 

The violent protest in Iraq are part of a larger undeclared war against Iran. 

A recent attempt to kill Major general Qassem Soleiman, the leader of Iran’s Quds force, is part of it: 

“The suspects had plotted to kill Soleimani during the Ashoura religious commemorations on September 9 and 10, according to [Iran Security Chief] Taeb. 

They sought to buy a property near a mosque built by Soleimani’s father in the city of Kerman, dig a tunnel underneath the site and rig it with “350 to 500 kilogrammes of explosives”, he said. 

The team planned to “blow up the entire place” as soon as Soleimani entered the mosque for Shia mourning ceremony.  

[Iran security chief] Taeb said the suspects “went to a neighbouring country” and “large sums of money were spent to train and prepare them” to carry out the attack.” 

New U.S. sanctions against Lebanese banks who allegedly support Hizbullah are likewise part of U.S./Israeli/Saudi effort to squeeze Iran and its proxies: 

“The Trump administration has intensified sanctions on the Lebanese militant group and institutions linked to it to unprecedented levels, targeting lawmakers for the first time as well as a local bank that Washington claims has ties to the group. 

Two U.S. officials visited Beirut in September and warned the sanctions will increase to deprive Hezbollah of its sources of income. The push is further adding to Lebanon’s severe financial and economic crisis, with Lebanese officials warning the country’s economy and banking sector can’t take the pressure. 

“We have taken more actions recently against Hezbollah than in the history of our counterterrorism program,” Sigal P. Mandelker, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence at the U.S. Treasury, said in the United Arab Emirates last month.” 

Mandelker, who was born and grew up in Israel and is furthering its interest, recently announced that she will leave the administration. This might be a sign that the pressure policy against Iran and other countries will change.

“7. The democratic system in Iraq has failed. There is no social, ideological and cultural basis for it in Iraq, as in the middle east as a whole. Additionally, to the missing cultural basis for it, there is also missing a much more homogenized society, which sees it self as more or less one.

(11 parags. from end): “Impeachment is a political process. The House will impeach Trump. That’s a given. They want it. And they see it as a way to hurt him and gain the White House. They know their field of candidates is terrible and this is the Hail Mary to win. 

But this is bigger than that. The shenanigans in Ukraine cut across so many different fiefdoms in the US government that a lot of people fear what happens if Trump isn’t removed from the White House. 

So, when I do the calculus it is as follows. The Democrats have 47 votes in the Senate. They need 20 to find Trump guilty. The first five votes against him are easy: Mitt Romney, who is as implicated as Biden is over Burisma, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Lindsay Graham and Marco Rubio. 

These are arch Neocons and are hopping mad at Trump for refusing to attack Iran for Israel. 

Getting another 15 votes doesn’t really seem that hard does it? 

Look, the GOP has not helped Trump one whit since he’s been President. They have left him to twist in the wind on every issue unless he’s backing more war and more military adventurism. That is the bottom line. 

And if the calculus is that backing him means implicating themselves and who they are beholden to Trump is toast, right or wrong. 

The GOP has been nothing but an albatross around Trump’s neck from the beginning. They will very likely rollover here and allow Mike Pence to play the part of Gerald Ford against whoever the Democrats put up. 

I’ve given Trump a lot of grief over his foreign policy and personnel choices because he’s deserved it. But, for all of his faults, his instincts about keeping the wars to a low simmer have held sway. 

This tactic by his opponents reeks of desperation and cover up. It smells like a coup, no different than the Mueller investigation. When the stakes are this high it is better to expect the worst rather than the middle ground. Because as bad as Trump is he is far better than what comes next.”

“Bare chested and painted in tattoos, the lead singer for a Texas heavy-metal rock group named Pantera gazed over a sea of tens of thousands of screaming Soviet fans sprawled over the Tushino Airfield Saturday afternoon and said that he was moved.

“It’s a killer thing we are all here together,” screamed the singer, Phil Anselmo, who had just removed a yellow devil’s mask, “and shows that music is the universal language.”

With that, members of Pantera, one of four Western heavy-metal bands appearing at what was described as the first free outdoor Western rock concert in Soviet history, lurched into their ear-splitting hit “Primal Concrete Slave” while the audience of teen-agers, bikers in black leather and other fans jammed their fists in the air and swayed jerkily with the heavy bass beat. 

The one-day concert, called “Monsters of Rock” and sponsored by Time Warner Inc., the entertainment and publishing conglomerate, brought to Moscow some of the West’s most popular heavy-metal bands, like AC/DC and Metallica. Crowd Estimated at 150,000  while other estimates ranged as much as three times higher.

Until a few years ago, AC/DC and its music were formally banned in the Soviet Union. Andrei Orlov, a music critic and writer, said the decision to let AC/DC play in Moscow reflects not only the liberalizing effect that President Mikhail S. Gorbachev has had on most aspects of life here but also a long overdue recognition of popular reality.

“Look at the graffiti in the city,” Mr. Orlov said. “AC/DC is written on every wall.” 

The concert was not the first time Western heavy-metal acts have played Moscow. In 1989, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi and Motley Crue filled Lenin Stadium for two days to help raise money for Soviet charities. Film by Time Warner.

Officials at Time Warner described the concert as a “celebration of democracy and freedom” in the Soviet Union, in the wake of last month’s failed coup. 

In return for bringing the acts to Moscow, Time Warner will come away with a documentary film that will presumably celebrate Time Warner celebrating democracy and freedom in the Soviet Union. There were nearly twice as many camera operators on and near the stage at any point than there were musicians. And automated cameras on booms dipped and curled above the crowd at Tushino, a sprawling and little-used military air base in northwest Moscow. 

There were some scattered arrests, as ranks of police officers wearing helmets and wielding truncheons chased after troublemakers and drunken youth, who appeared to be well represented among the crowd. Police took little chance on the crowd’s getting out of hand. More than 1,000 militiamen were on guard around the stage,and more were hidden in trucks parked farther away.”

Added: Metallica’s “Enter Sandman" of course was the entrance music of NY Yankee relief pitcher, Mariano Rivera. Many of Rivera’s fans happily connect the song with his 19 stellar seasons with the Yankees, 1995-2013, his 141 post season innings, his many All Star game appearances, and enjoyed seeing Metallica live at Yankee Stadium. Rivera politely says he prefers Christian music and that the song was chosen for him by someone else. In 2019 Rivera became the first MLB player to be elected unanimously to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

“Hello, I’m Severn Suzuki speaking for “ECO”–the Environmental Children’s Organization. 

We are a group of 12 and 13-year-olds trying to make a difference: Vanessa Suttie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quigg, and me. We’ve raised all the money to come here ourselves — to come 5,000 miles to tell you adults you must change your ways. 

Coming up here today, I have no hidden agenda. I am fighting for my future. Losing my future is not like losing an election, or a few points on the stock market. 

I am here to speak for all generations to come. I am here to speak — speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard. I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet, because they have nowhere left to go. I am afraid to go out in the sun now, because of the holes in our ozone. I am afraid to breathe the air, because I don’t know what chemicals are in it.

I used to go in-I used to go fishing in Vancouver, my home, with my Dad until, just a few years ago, we found the fish full of cancers. And now we hear of animals and plants going extinct every day, vanishing forever. In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles, and rainforests full of birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see. 

Did you have to worry of these things when you were my age? All this is happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions. I’m only a child and I don’t have all the solutions. I don’t — I want you to realize, neither do you. You don’t know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer. You don’t know how to bring the salmon back up in a dead stream. You don’t know how to bring back an animal now extinct. And you can’t bring back the forests that once grew where there is now a desert. If you don’t know how to fix it, please stop breaking it. 

Here, you may be delegates of your governments, business people, organizers, reporters, or politicians. But, really, you are mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles — and all of you are someone’s child. 

I’m only a child, yet I know we are all part of a family — five billion strong; in fact, 30 million species strong — and borders and governments will never change that. I’m only a child, yet I know we are all in this together and should act as one single world towards one single goal. 

In--In my anger, I’m not blind; and in my fear, I’m not afraid of telling the world how I feel. In my country [Canada] we make so much waste, we buy and throw away, buy and throw away, buy and throw away and yet Northern countries will not share with the needy. Even when we have more than enough we are afraid to share; we are afraid to let go of some of our wealth. 

In Canada, we live the privileged life. We’ve plenty of food, water, and shelter. We have watches, bicycles, computers, and television sets. The list could go on for two days. Two days ago, here in Brazil, we were shocked when we spent time with some children living on the streets. This is what one child told us: “I wish I was rich and if I were, I would give all the street children food, clothes, medicines, shelter, and love and affection.” 

If a child on the streets who has nothing is willing to share, why are we who have everything still so greedy? I can’t stop thinking that these are children my own age, that it makes a tremendous difference where you are born; that I could be one of those children living in the favelas of Rio. I could be a child starving in Somalia, or a victim of war in the Middle East, or a beggar in India. I am only a child, yet I know if all the money spent on war was spent on finding environmental answers ending poverty and in finding treaties, what a wonderful place this Earth would be. 

At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us how to behave in the world. You teach us to not to fight with others, to work things out, to respect others, to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share, not be greedy. Then, why do you go out and do — do the things you tell us not to do? Do not forget why you are attending these conferences — who you’re doing this for. We are your own children. You are deciding what kind of a world we are growing up in. 

Parents should be able to comfort their children by saying, “Everything’s going to be all right; it’s not the end of the world, and we’re — and we’re doing the best we can.” But I don’t think you can say that to us anymore. Are we even on your list of priorities? 

My dad always says, “You are what you do, not what you say.” Well, what you do makes me cry at night. You grown-ups say you love us. But I challenge you, please, make your actions reflect your words.

“The port of Alexandroupolis, in northeastern Greece bordering Turkey and Bulgaria, is located in front of the Aegean Sea, on the edge of the Dardanelles Strait, which, connecting the Mediterranean with the Black Sea in Turkish territory, constitutes a fundamental route of the Maritime transit, especially for Russia. 

The strategic importance of that port, which Ambassador Pyatt visited accompanied by the Minister of Defense of Greece, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, has been the subject of an explanation provided precisely by the United States embassy in Athens: 

“Due to its strategic location and its infrastructure, the port of Alexandroupolis is well placed to guarantee support for military exercises in the region, as was demonstrated in the recent Saber Guardian 2019. 

The ” strategic investment ” that Washington is already making in several ports aims to turn Alexandroupolis into one of the most important US military bases in the region, with the ability to block Russian ships’ access to the Mediterranean. That is possible thanks to the “exceptional military relations “ with Greece, which has long since made its bases available to the United States – especially the base of Larissa, for the armed drones Reaper, that of Stefanovikeio for F-16 fighter planes and Apache helicopters. This last base will be privatized and the United States has decided to buy it [with US tax dollars]. 

Ambassador Pyatt does not hide the interest of the United States to strengthen its military presence in Greece, as well as in other countries of the Mediterranean region. « We work with other democratic partners in the region to reject malefic actors such as Russia and China, with interests contrary to ours », [Do you mean that unlike the “malefic” US, Russia and China don’t agree with lavishly funding Islamic terrorists and illegally occupying a third of Syria?] explains the US ambassador before stating that « Russia uses energy as an instrument of its malefic influence ». [Assuming that’s so, how is it not “malefic” when the terror sponsor US does it?] He then underlines the importance that “geopolitics of energy“ has achieved, stating that ” Alexandroupolis has a crucial role as a link for energy security and stability in Europe .“ Western Thrace, the Greek region where the port of Alexandroupolis is located, is, in effect, ” an energy crossroads for central and eastern Europe .”

Just look at the map to understand what the ambassador means. Eastern Thrace is bordering the small European part of Turkey where it arrives, after crossing the Black Sea, the Turk Stream gas pipeline from Russia, already in completion. From there, through another pipeline, Russian gas should reach Bulgaria, Serbia and other European countries. That is the Russian response to the US maneuver, which – with the important complicity of the European Union – blocked in 2014 the South-Stream pipeline, which would have brought Russian gas to Italy and the other countries of the European Union . 

The United States is now trying to block the Turk Stream as well, which is already more difficult due to the deterioration of relations between Ankara and Washington. So the United States now hopes to use Greece, a country that large amounts of US liquid natural gas are already arriving to replace Russian gas. 

It is not yet clear what the United States is preparing in Greece, even against China, which plans to make the Greek port of Piraeus an important stopover of the new Silk Road. But it would not be surprising if we had a ” Alexandroupolis incident ” in the Aegean Sea, similar to the ” Tonkin incident“.”
