Uneven performances in Trump-less Republican forum in NH, Jeb Bush stumbled, stammered-New York Times

8/3/15, NY Times
"Jeb Bush stumbled through a familiar question about his brother and father, struggling for the right words as he cracked a joke about duking it out with anyone who questioned the legacy of his aging dad.

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey awkwardly said aloud what many have been wondering about his candidacy: “Am I washed up?”

And Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina reached back to the 1990s to attack Hillary Rodham Clinton’s credibility by dredging up her husband’s dishonesty about a sexual affair.

Mischievously promising to translate “Clinton-speak” for the audience, Mr. Graham explained, “When Bill says, ‘I didn’t have sex with that woman,’ he did.”

After weeks of preparing for a smash-mouth debate with Donald J. Trump, 14 Republican candidates found themselves instead Trump-less but sandwiched into a constricting format on Monday night, delivering strikingly uneven performances just days before the first big test of the presidential primary contest.

Rather than making the other contenders look more presidential, however, the event, at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. seemed to shrink the candidates. Assembled in the front row, the Republicans gawked as each rival took his or her turn on stage, looking at times as if they were being forced to sit through a tedious school assembly.

In Mr. Trump’s absence — he skipped the event, saying it was not worth his time — the candidates filled two hours with credentials and boasts that he could not match. They touted their experience balancing big state budgets (Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Gov. John Kasich of Ohio), their military service (Mr. Graham) and their middle-class roots (Carly Fiorina.)....

Still, Mr. Trump’s influence could be discerned. The moderator, Jack Heath, a New Hampshire radio host, repeatedly pressed the candidates on immigration, the issue that Mr. Trump has ridden to the top of the polls. And it seemed clear they felt compelled to take as hard a line as they could to leave as little room as possible between their positions and his.

Rick Perry, the former governor of Texas, said he had looked President Obama in the eye and warned, “Mr. President, if you don’t secure the border, Texas will.” He listed the security measures he favored for stemming the flow of illegal immigrants, from air patrols of the border 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to a stronger fence in certain places.

The forum, sponsored by The Union Leader newspaper, seemed to lack the drama and anticipation surrounding Thursday night’s Republican debate in Cleveland. Candidates were not permitted to interact with each other directly; instead, they each took two turns at the microphone, fielding rapid-fire questions from the moderator, before being given 30 seconds for closing statements.

Some were not even in New Hampshire. Three of the senators who participated — Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Marco Rubio of Florida — did so from a studio in Washington, where they stayed so they could vote for stripping Planned Parenthood of its federal funding. (The vote failed in a Democratic-led filibuster.)

The unusual format and repeated interruptions by timekeepers led to several painfully awkward moments.

Former Gov. George Pataki of New York was mid-sentence — “By the way, Jack” — when the moderator cut him off. He reacted with surprise, stood up and walked off. At another point, a woman suddenly emerged from stage right with a folder in hand, beckoning Mr. Perry to leave. He sheepishly did so.

C-Span cameras caught candidates waiting their turn, forlornly watching their rivals onstage, sometimes in unflattering ways. Mr. Christie at one point sat with his head down, looking positively bored, as he listened to Mr. Walker. As Rick Santorum, the former senator from Pennsylvania, gave his closing statement, Ms. Fiorina was caught gabbing with Mr. Graham.

There were moments of levity. The moderator asked Mr. Perry to name agencies he would cut from the federal government, the same question that tripped him up, disastrously, during a Republican presidential debate in 2012. “I’ve heard this question before,” Mr. Perry deadpanned, to laughs.

There were revealing moments, too. Mr. Heath asked Mr. Christie if his best shot at the White House had been in 2012. Mr. Christie gamely replied, “Jack, you saying I’m washed up?” He added that, back then, "I was not ready."...

The format seemed ill suited to a number of candidates. Mr. Bush, the former Florida governor, whose eight years out of office has left many wondering about his adroitness as a debater, delivered a low-key and sometimes halting performance — particularly on the subject of the Islamic State. He said America “needs to pick a strategy and stick with it,” but when asked about putting American forces on the ground to fight it, his answer seemed wobbly: “I’m not sure that’s necessary.”

He also stammered through his attempt at a joke about his famous family. "My dad is the probably the most perfect man alive, so it’s very hard for me to be critical of him,” he said. “In fact, I’ve got a T-shirt that says, uh, at the Jeb swag store, that says I’m the, um, I’m the, my dad’s the greatest man alive. If you don’t like it, I’ll take you outside.”" via Free Rep.

Comment: This stilted event was a good idea if the point was to diminish GOP candidates and the GOP in general. After 2012, the GOP E had supposedly decided the key to victory in 2016 was to cut down on the number of group tv events. As of 2015, perhaps someone beyond E control was getting too much attention, so E decided to add another tv show in an attempt to show they were still in charge. If the fraud Pataki was embarrassed then the night wasn't a total loss.

More from New Hampshire on Trump:

7/29/15 New Hampshire focus group of Republicans and Independents strongly favored Trump to shock and awe of Morning Joe hosts:

7/30/15, "MSNBC hosts openly STUNNED by [New Hampshire] Trump supporters’ verdict; ‘He’s one of us!’" bizpacreview.com, Nicole Haas

"The hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” were completely shocked Thursday — and even looked a little green — after hearing the articulate responses from a focus group on why they support Donald Trump for president.

Despite Trump’s status as a billionaire businessman and celebrity, New Hampshire Republican voters said they see Trump’s brazen honesty as a refreshing change.
..........
“He’s one of us,” said one voter. “He speaks the truth, he doesn’t care what people think.”

Other members of the group characterized Trump as “unchoreographed,” “honest,” and “rough.”
They agreed that Trump stands out among a long list of establishment types.

“Trump is a threat,” said one man. “Because he doesn’t fit in the same box as all the other Republicans.”

The panel host asked group members if they were offended by Trump calling some illegal immigrants, “rapists” and “murderers.”

“It didn’t bother me,” several simultaneously said.

The voters talked about “common sense” in regards to securing the border. They also viewed Trump’s enormous success as an attribute.

“I want to be a billionaire,” said one man. Another added, “How can I begrudge the guy? He worked hard.”

They thought Trump’s business acumen makes him suited to reverse the nation’s debt spiral. And one described a possible Trump presidency as “one of hope.”

That was about all it took to nearly knock MSNBC hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough off their chairs.

“Wow, wow, wow,” Scarborough repeatedly said.

“This, is incredible,” an obviously stunned Brzezinski added.

The two lamented over the “mysterious” Trump support, when Scarborough hit on something.

“You know what, [Trump’s] pissed off,” he said.

And that right there, makes him “one of us.”"

"Donald Trump is a brand, and his New Hampshire supporters are itching to buy it.

A Bloomberg Politics focus group of 12 Republican and independent voters who are supportive of Donald Trump's presidential candidacy shed light Wednesday night (7/29/15) on the billionaire's swift rise to the top of the GOP field, and confirmed that his brash, “You're fired!” style and lack of experience in politics is more of an asset than a liability.

“He says it like it is,” said Jessica, a data analyst, during the focus group in the first-in-the-nation primary state, conducted by Purple Strategies at St. Anselm College in Manchester. “He speaks the truth.”"...

Senator Ted Cruz was a crowd favorite in California this weekend, usually mild mannered donor group cheered on hearing Cruz's remarks-Washington Post

.
Commenter wonders why Washington Post reporter uses pejorative term "bragging" when relating facts presented by Ted Cruz at an appropriate time: "Savvyheat 2:55 AM EST, Why does the writer/James Whoreman use the word 'Bragging' when describing how Cruz told donors he's received more than 175,000 donations, that the average contribution was $81, from every state in the nation and five territories and that he has donors in 48 percent of all postal ZIP codes in America. How about QUIT editorializing and just tell us the DAMNED News. Unless this is the Opinion page?" Hohmann writes: "He (Ted Cruz) opened a half-hour question-and-answer session by bragging that he raised more hard money than any other Republican in the field during the last fundraising quarter, including Jeb Bush."...

8/3/15, "Ted Cruz looking to build Southern ‘firewall’," Washington Post, James Hohmann, Dana Point, Calif.  "James Hohmann is a national political correspondent for The Washington Post."

"Ted Cruz made the case Sunday that he can win the Republican nomination because of his strength in the South.

The Texas senator was a crowd favorite at the Koch network donor summit here. He got the normally mild-mannered donors laughing and cheering with his red meat. But many worry privately whether he can win, and they’re desperate to take back the White House in 2016.

Recognizing this, Cruz did more to stress his viability than any of the four other 2016 presidential candidates who got a chance to pitch the 450 mega donors who have gathered at the St. Regis resort on the Pacific Ocean for a meeting that wraps up on Monday.

He opened a half-hour question-and-answer session by bragging that he raised more hard money than any other Republican in the field during the last fundraising quarter, including Jeb Bush. This money, he explained, will help him run a national campaign, not just one focused on the first four states in the nominating process.

“For any serious candidate to play, you’re going to have to run a national campaign,” he said. “If you are going to run a national campaign, you’ve got to be able to compete nationally.”

Cruz plans to spend a good chunk of the August recess traveling by bus around the South, including South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

Several of these states will hold primaries on March 1 in a regional primary that has been dubbed the SEC Primary after the Southeastern Conference in college football. March 1 is the first date that non-early states are allowed to schedule their contests. A candidate who wins then might get momentum going into the winner-take-all contests that begin March 15. “I view the SEC primary as a firewall,” Cruz confided to the audience.

He explained that the first states are “critical”-that he is still playing to win in Iowa-but that Republican National Committee rules going into effect for the first time in 2016 have “sped up the process.”

Cruz wore khakis, an open-collared white dress shirt and a blue blazer. He stayed after his question-and-answer session with Politico’s Mike Allen to watch Jeb Bush field questions. Ahead of the formal rollout of new Environmental Protection Agency rules Monday, Cruz denied that that there is global warming. Asked if President Obama is exaggerating the dangers of climate change, Cruz paused for effect.

“You know, there’s a different word than exaggerating,” he said to cheers and loud applause.

Cruz predicted that the new rules, designed to cut carbon emissions, give the GOP an opportunity to appeal to steelworkers, autoworkers, and factory workers in 2016. The same kinds of people, he explained a little later, who did not vote for Mitt Romney because of his 47 percent comment. “The Obama administration is driving up their bills and taking away their jobs,” he said."

=====================

Comment: It would be nice if Obama were the only reason for the climate cartel. The multi-trillion dollar global warming industry was created by George Bush #1 on 1/16/1990 via U.S. Global Change Research Act, USGCRP, which embedded climate spending in the Executive branch and 13 federal agencies (out of reach of congress and voters). The act financed the global climate science boom before most people had heard of climate scientists. Billions of taxpayer dollars that could've gone to the poor and needy continue to be diverted to millionaires, billionaires and various global parasites. The problem isn't loss of blue collar jobs or the EPA. It's the US political establishment which is obsessed with selling the country out. If Senator Cruz wants to get elected in a landslide and save the country and possibly the world at the same time, he can call for immediate US withdrawal from the UN which is kept afloat by US taxpayer dollars, whose personnel are unelected, unaccountable, can't be prosecuted for any crime anywhere in the world, and can put US taxpayer dollars in a Swiss bank account without consequence:

"Commissioner Dov Zakheim, a former Pentagon controller, asked Gambatesa whether the (UN) agencies have immunity "if they siphon (their U.S. grants) all off into Swiss banks? Is that accurate? They will be totally immune, no matter what they do with the money?"

"My understanding is, yes," Gambatesa replied." (near end of USA Today article):

1990 USGCRP established US taxpayers as global ATM machine for imaginary climate danger profiteers:

"2. By any standards, what we have documented here is a massive funding drive, highlighting the patterns of climate science RandD as funded and directed only by the Executive Branch and the various agencies that fall within its purview."...

3/6/15, "Causes and consequences of the climate science boom," William Butos and Thomas McQuade

From the paper:

"1. The Government’s Role in Climate Science Funding...[is] embedded in scores of agencies and programs scattered throughout the Executive Branch of the US government. While such agency activities related to climate science have received funding for many years as components of their mission statements, the pursuit of an integrated national agenda to study climate change and implement policy initiatives took a critical step with passage of the Global Change Research Act of 1990. This Act established institutional structures operating out of the White House to develop and oversee the implementation of a National Global Change Research Plan and created the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) to coordinate the climate change research activities of Executive Departments and agencies.[33] As of 2014, the coordination of climate change-related activities resides largely in the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, which houses several separate offices, including the offices of Environment and Energy, Polar Sciences, Ocean Sciences, Clean Energy and Materials RandD, Climate Adaptation and Ecosystems, National Climate Assessment, and others. The Office of the President also maintains the National Science and Technology Council, which oversees the Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Sustainability and its Subcommittee on Climate Change Research. The Subcommittee is charged with the responsibility of planning and coordinating with the interagency USGCRP. Also, the Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy is housed within the President’s Domestic Policy Council. While Congress authorizes Executive branch budgets, the priorities these departments and agencies follow are set by the White House. As expressed in various agency and Executive Branch strategic plans, these efforts have been recently organized around four components comprising (1) climate change research and education, (2) emissions reduction through “clean” energy technologies and investments, (3) adaptation to climate change, and (4) international climate change leadership.[36]....By any of these measures, the scale of climate science RandD has increased substantially since 2001. Perhaps, though, the largest funding increases have occurred in developing new technologies and tax subsidies. As can be seen from Table 1, federal dollars to develop and implement “clean energy technologies” have increased from $1.7 billion in 2001 to $5.8 billion in 2013, while energy tax subsidies have increased from zero in 2001 and 2002 to $13 billion in 2013, with the largest increases happening since 2010. The impact on scientific research of government funding is not just a matter of the amounts but also of the concentration of research monies that arises from the focus a single source can bring to bear on particular kinds of scientific research. Government is that single source and has Big Player effects because it has access to a deep pool of taxpayer (and, indeed, borrowed and created) funds combined with regulatory and enforcement powers which necessarily place it on a different footing from other players and institutions. Notwithstanding the interplay of rival interests within the government and the separation of powers among the different branches, there is an important sense in which government’s inherent need to act produces a particular set of decisions that fall within a relatively narrow corridor of ends to which it can concentrate substantial resources.

2. By any standards, what we have documented here is a massive funding drive, highlighting the patterns of climate science RandD as funded and directed only by the Executive Branch and the various agencies that fall within its purview.[40] To put its magnitude into some context, the $9.3 billion funding requested for climate science RandD in 2013 is about one-third of the total amount appropriated for all 27 National Institutes of Health in the same year,[41] yet it is more than enough to sustain a science boom. Its directional characteristic, concentrated as it has been on R&D premised on the controversial issue of the actual sensitivity of climate to human-caused emissions, has gone hand in hand with the IPCC’s expressions of increasing confidence in the AGW hypothesis and increasingly shrill claims of impending disaster."...

Underlying Chamber of Commerce and GOP E 2016 strategy still in place, ie either Bush or Clinton is fine, but Marist McClatchy says polls shouldn't be used to qualify for debates, large margins of error, differences in methodology not accounted for-The Conservative Treehouse

.
For example, latest NBC Wall St. Journal poll included only 252 respondents. The Silent Majority will in any case be silenced by Chamber of Commerce purchase of weaponry to splinter the non-Jeb vote in Texas, Ohio, Florida and now Virginia.

8/2/15, "Marist suspends GOP polling ahead of Fox debate," Politico, Hadas Gold

"The Marist Institute of Public Opinion has suspended its polling of the GOP primary field in protest of how polls are being used to determine debate participants.

The poll, which is done in conjunction with McClatchy, is one of the more well-respected national polls regularly conducted. But Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist Institute, told McClatchy that they’re suspending their poll for this week because the debate criteria assumes the polls are more precise than they are in reality. The group still polled on general election match-ups as well as likes and dislikes of the primary candidates, but not who voters would vote for in the GOP primary.

“It’s a problem when it’s shaping who gets to sit at the table,” Miringoff said.

Miringoff, who has long argued against using national polls for the debate criteria, insisted that polls are meant to shed light on how the electorate is thinking, and that the difference between candidates might be statistically negligible, especially when incorporating margin of error. There’s also the issue of averaging five polls, each of which likely use different methods.

“It’s a bad use of public polls,” Miringoff said. “It asks public polls to have a precision that ignores the margin of error. There’s a big distinction made where there’s no statistical difference.”

The first GOP primary debate will be this Thursday, hosted by Fox News. The prime-time debate will feature the candidates who made it into the top 10 based on the average of five recent national polls. Fox has suggested that the criteria would allow for more than 10 candidates on stage, if there were to be a tie. But as it stands, several prominent GOP contenders – including the governor of Ohio, where the debate is being held – are in danger of being left out. The candidates who don't make the prime time debate stage will have the opportunity to participate in a forum hosted by Fox ahead of the debate, airing at 5 p.m.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry are currently battling for the last two spots on Fox News’ debate stage. According to a POLITICO analysis, Christie and Kasich are tied for ninth place, at 3.2 percent. Perry is outside of the top 10, in 11th place, at 2.6 percent.

According to POLITICO Campaigns editor Steven Shepard, the top 10 as of Sunday likely consists of Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Christie and Kasich.

(CNN, which is holding the second Republican primary debate on Sept. 16, has said its debate will be divided into two parts featuring those who rank in the top 10 according to averages of public polling, and the remaining candidates who meet a minimum threshold of 1 percent in public polling.)

Another issue: The campaigns have not been told which national polls are being used to determine the criteria, a fact former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina pointed out in an interview with POLITICO’s Mike Allen on Saturday at the Koch-funded Freedom Partners summer conference.

“Truth is we don’t know what debate we’re in yet and we don’t know what polls are being used,” said Fiorina, who according to recent polls is outside of the top 10. “These national polls mostly measure national name ID. I would also say that at this same point in presidential cycles past, the polls, the pundits, and the money predicted that Jimmy Carter would lose, Ronald Reagan would lose, Bill Clinton would lose, and Barack Obama would lose.”

Kasich, Perry and Christie have all been stepping up their media appearances in an effort to increase their exposure and possibly bump up their poll numbers.

“We’re supposed to be measuring that which is occurring,” Miringoff told POLITICO last week. “By making the poll numbers determine eligibility to get into the debate, the polls are actually shaping candidate behavior. They are just trying to create a surge to get into the debate. That’s not just putting the cart before the horse. That’s putting the cart before the cart.”

Fox's executive vice president of news Michael Clemente, who is overseeing the debates, said in a statement that people will see the debate criteria was fair when the results are released.

"Common sense would tell you that there is no formal schedule for who releases polls and when. And fairness would tell you that we can't judge any poll until you can see the methodology. When the results are released, everyone will see that common sense and fairness prevailed," Clemente said."

"The Wall Street Journal and NBC have published their last national poll prior to the debate qualification cutoff. However, there’s something considerably afoot with the entire construct of the debate field.

In addition, this poll is sketchy at best, because it only includes “252 interviews” within the poll, yet is considered a “substantive poll” used for the qualification of the debate field....

(Via NBC) Days before the first Republican debate, Donald Trump has surged into the national lead in the GOP primary race, with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush following, a new NBC News/ Wall Street Journal poll shows.
  • Donald Trump – 19%
  • Scott Walker – 15%
  • Jeb Bush – 14%
  • Ben Carson – 10%
  • Ted Cruz – 9%
  • Mike Huckabee – 6%
  • Rand Paul – 6%
  • Marco Rubio – 5%
  • Chris Christie – 3%
  • Rick Perry – 3%
  • John Kasich – 3%
  • Bobby Jindal – 1%
  • Rick Santorum – 1%
  • Carly Fiorina – *
  • Lindsey Graham – *
  • George Pataki – *
  • Jim Gilmore – *
(LINK) Only the top 10 candidates — calculated by an average of the last five major national polls — will be eligible to participate in Thursday’s FOX News debate in prime time, according to the network’s rules. Incorporating the new NBC/WSJ numbers, NBC estimates that the top ten candidates at this time are:
  • Trump – 19.8 percent
  • Walker – 13.2 percent
  • Bush – 13 percent
  • Paul – 6.4 percent
  • Carson – 6.4 percent
  • Rubio – 6.2 percent
  • Huckabee – 5.8 percent
  • Cruz – 5.8 percent
  • Christie – 3.2 percent
  • Kasich – 3.2 percent
Those missing the cut are:
  • Perry – 2.6 percent
  • Santorum – 1.4 percent
  • Jindal – 1.4 percent
  • Fiorina – 0.6 percent
  • Pataki – 0.6 percent
  • Graham- 0.4 percent
  • Gilmore – 0 percent

Those following along will note the underlying CoC (Chamber of Commerce) strategy playing out with (what I believe to be help from) Fox News Leadership....

............

Remember the CoC/GOPe  Jeb’s strategy involves splitting the Non-Jeb vote into smaller segments thereby insuring that Jeb Bush can win the overall nomination while only carrying 10-15% of the electorate vote.

Toward this end the CoC/GOPe has quietly financed candidates to keep them in the strategic race. The larger electoral states (Texas, Ohio, Florida) have CoC funded candidates within them ( Perry, Kasich, Rubio ) all with the goal to splinter the Non-Jeb vote.

In addition with the risk of Trump continuing to increase and the looming possibility he will knock over the apple cart, the CoC is now buying additional insurance policies. That’s why Virginia just became important, and so the CoC financed Jim Gilmore to enter the race. Gilmore, like Rubio, is an insurance policy – split Virginia, then endorse Jeb....

IMPORTANT – Remember, in order for the plan to work, there must be a candidate from Texas, Ohio, Florida (Large Electoral Counts) and now Virginia, who is NOT JEB; and who can split the NOT JEB vote. This is the lynchpin for CoC/GOPe success.

Now, notice Kasich (Ohio) debate qualifies with 3.2%.  Perry not meeting the cut is not important because he’s an expendable secondary insurance, with dual value, Texas and South Carolina (Perry is valuable in SC hence the CoC funding him there).

In order for the CoC/GOPe 15% strategy to work, Kasich, Rubio and Cruz must be on the ballots in Ohio, Florida and Texas.  Kasich, Rubio and Cruz (and/or Perry) must be kept in the race.

Wall Street, The U.S. CoC and The GOPe don’t care which one (Bush or Hillary) wins. The goal is to make sure that these are the only options. Remember:

If the hierarchy within the republican party loses an election to Democrats it’s only a lost election; they are still there, and still comfortable even in the minority. No biggie.

However, if the hierarchy within the republican party loses an election to Conservatives, they are out of a job.

The only one who can screw up their plan is Donald Trump."

Funding from Catholic Bishops gave Obama his start in community organizing in Chicago-Catholic Democrats

.
Article geared to Nov. 2008 elections notes Catholic Church gave Obama his start in community organizing in Chicago and quotes Obama saying so:

2008, "The Catholic case for Obama," Catholic Democrats

"The Catholic perspective on American political life is very much shaped by Catholic Social Teaching, a view of the world developed over the past 120 years through a series of church encyclicals, synods and pastoral letters addressing the dignity of the individual and in particular the plight of the world’s poor. This book tells the story of Barack Obama’s early exposure to Catholicism, compares the contours of his public life with the Catholic Social Tradition, and explores the reasons why many Catholics will be enthusiastically voting for the Obama/Biden ticket in 2008.
..............
Americans are weary of being pitted against one another over issues of race, disparity of wealth, and religion. Senator Obama has made bringing Americans together to solve common problems the central theme of his campaign, along with restoring the pride Americans once felt about our country’s historical role as a moral leader among nations. The cornerstones of Catholic Social Teaching are justice and reconciliation. The Catholic path takes us away from the divisions and hostilities of the present, and toward a more peaceful future.

In his early career, Barack Obama took a job working as a community organizer for a group of eight Catholic parishes in Chicago, one of the nation's largest cities. With funding from the U.S. Bishops, he worked for three years out of an office in a Catholic church rectory to empower thousands of people who were suffering through tough economic times not unlike what we are seeing now. Reminiscing about his time working in this neighborhood, Barack said in an October 2008 interview with Catholic Digest, "I got my start as a community organizer working with mostly Catholic parishes on the South Side of Chicago that were struggling because the steel plants had closed. The Campaign for Human Development [CCHD] helped fund the project, and so very early on, my career was intertwined with the belief in social justice that is so strong in the Church."...

Taken all together, Senator Obama is a man who is familiar the Catholic Social Tradition, and has striven throughout his life to work for the common good. He chose a Catholic running mate [Biden] who has similarly dedicated during 35 years in the Senate to a safer America, both at home and abroad. Senator Obama has proposed a new, more constructive approach to solving the abortion problem in a way that brings people together rather than pitting them against one another. On questions ranging from war to environmental stewardship, and from fairness to the alleviation of poverty, he has demonstrated himself to be someone who merits serious consideration by every Catholic voting in 2008."...

2010 article, 10+ Catholic Bishops stop CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development) collections over questions about grant practices and recipients:

7/7/2010, "10 dioceses quit bishops' antipoverty campaign," National Catholic Reporter, Jerry Filteau

"At least 10 U.S. bishops have decided within the past year to suspend or drop their annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in their dioceses, and another is withholding funds at least for now.

Bishop Bernard Hebda of Gaylord, Mich., said in June that he has decided to delay sending the diocese’s annual donation to the campaign until a review of its grant practices is completed. The U.S. bishops’ subcommittee on the campaign is currently reviewing funding practices and gave a preliminary report to the bishops’ Administrative Committee in March.

Several of the bishops who have decided to suspend or drop the collection cited concerns about some grant recipients. Some recipients have had to return grants when church officials learned they were directly involved in some activity not in accord with Catholic moral and social teaching. Grant recipients are required to certify that they do not engage in any such activities."...

Courier Post

"American Pharoah took an easy tour of the track at Monmouth Park on Thursday morning, another step toward the $1.75 million Haskell Invitational.

The Triple Crown winner is the overwhelming 1-5 favorite in a field of eight 3-year-olds for the race, which will be American Pharoah's first since he swept the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes and became the 12th Triple Crown winner and first in 37 years.

American Pharoah will leave from the No. 4 post following Thursday's draw and be ridden by Victor Espinoza. He is owned by Ahmed Zayat of Teaneck, New Jersey, and trained by Bob Baffert.

A winner in seven of eight career starts with more than $4 million in earnings, American Pharoah is not taking on the most formidable field. Upstart, who ran 18th in the Kentucky Derby in his last start, is the second choice at 6-1, and will be ridden by Monmouth favorite Joe Bravo.

The colt was taken for a slow, one-mile jog on his first trip over the surface for Sunday's race. American Pharoah stepped out on the track shortly after 7:30 a.m. and hugged the outer fence down the backstretch and grandstand rail, where fans gathered to snap cellphone shots.

Back at the barn, he alertly posed for photos after receiving a bath on the warm morning under the supervision of Jimmy Barnes, Bob Baffert's assistant trainer.

"He had a very high energy level this morning," Barnes said. "We couldn't be happier. The first day, we usually do something very light and we gave him a good look at the place."

Barnes said American Pharoah would have a more vigorous gallop Friday morning.

"He's a very well-mannered horse," Barnes said. "It makes it very easy to travel with him and experience new places."

And if you want to see American Pharoah run the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and New Jersey Transit have announced plans to help move a record number of attendees expected to turn out to see the Triple Crown winner this Sunday, August 2.

"With record crowds expected to come out to see Triple Crown winner American Pharoah at the Haskell Invitational this weekend, NJDOT and NJ TRANSIT have developed a plan to move people in and out of Monmouth Park as safely and efficiently as possible," NJDOT Commissioner and NJ Transit Chairman Jamie Fox said. "We are adding additional trains dedicated to fans departing after the race, and implementing traffic management plans with local law enforcement to keep traffic moving on Route 36 to the Garden State Parkway."

Route 36 is the primary access route to Shore destinations in Long Branch and neighboring towns. With the large crowds expected for the Haskell, Route 36 and neighboring roads are expected to be congested and have delays, particularly Sunday evening after the race. Motorists should plan extra time for arriving and departing Monmouth Park.

"In addition to our regularly scheduled trains stopping at Monmouth Park, NJ Transit plans to operate unscheduled trains to help facilitate the movement of people safely out of the park," Executive Director Veronique Hakim said.

NJ TRANSIT

To assist fans getting to and from the event, every local NJ Transit train on Sunday will stop at the Monmouth Park Station. After the race, four additional trains will be dedicated to fans departing Monmouth Park heading toward Newark, and one additional train will be dedicated to fans heading south toward Bay Head. After the regularly scheduled 6:09 p.m. northbound train leaves, the additional trains will be moved into the station one at a time. Once a train is full, it will depart and the next train will be moved into the station. The extra train heading southbound is expected to depart after the regularly scheduled 6:34 p.m. train.

If capacity allows, the Summer Shore Express trains heading to New York Penn Station also will stop at Monmouth Park. However, if the Express train picks up passengers at Monmouth Park, it will become a local train making stops at each station.

Riders are advised to purchase roundtrip tickets in advance because there are no ticket vending machines at the Monmouth Park Station, and they should be prepared for longer than average wait times. In addition, NJ TRANSIT customers should be aware that the Monmouth Park Station is not ADA accessible, and no open containers of alcohol will be permitted on the trains.

ROUTE 36

In order to ease congestion for motorists leaving the event, NJDOT will close one through lane of Route 36 westbound and the right-turn lane onto Oceanport Avenue north to keep traffic departing Monmouth Park moving freely onto Route 36 westbound toward the Garden State Parkway in an effort to minimize delays. NJDOT will be working with local law enforcement, which will be manually controlling traffic signals before and after the race, to help keep traffic flowing and to minimize congestion.

Variable message signs will notify motorists of the exercise while it is underway. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website 511nj.org for real-time trAvenuel information.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

Motorists are advised that Oceanport Avenue between Port Au Peck Avenue and the Main Gate of Monmouth Park will be closed to all vehicle traffic from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Detours will be in place, but it is advised to plan alternate routes to avoid the large pedestrian flow, and additional vehicle traffic in and out of Monmouth Park. Motorists will also encounter delays on Port Au Peck Avenue near the New Jersey Transit Railway line and the Picnic Area entrance to Monmouth Park. This area of Port Au Peck Avenue is subject to closure anytime between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Heavy traffic congestion will occur on surrounding roadways from 8am, due to the inbound flow of traffic into the Track. This heavy inbound flow should last most of the day into mid afternoon.

At 4 p.m. Port Au Peck Avenue will be closed to all traffic from Myrtle Avenue to Oceanport Avenue. Detours will be in place to direct motorists to utilize Asbury Avenue and Bridgewaters Drive for crosstown travel.

Note: The posted speed limit on Asbury and Bridgewaters Drive is 25mph. This speed limit will be strictly enforced.

Parking vehicles on roadways near Monmouth Park will be prohibited. No Parking signs will be posted on those roadways around Monmouth Park. Vehicles parked illegally will be ticketed and towed.

Following the running of the Haskell Race at 5:50pm, a heavy outbound flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic will enter surrounding roadways causing heavy traffic buildups in the area.

During this outbound flow the following roadways will be closed:

Oceanport Avenue between the Main Gate of Monmouth Park and Port Au Peck Avenue.
Oceanport Avenue northbound from the West Long Branch Line to the Main Gate of Monmouth Park. Port Au Peck Avenue between Oceanport Avenue and Myrtle Avenue (near the New Jersey Transit Rail line.)

Port Au Peck Avenue eastbound from Oceanport Avenue to East Main Street
Eatontown Blvd southbound between Wolf Hill Avenue/Port Au Peck Avenue and Crescent Place.

Main Street between Oceanport Avenue and Wolf Hill Avenue. (Residents will be allowed to enter Main Street to travel to their residences).

East Main Street southbound from Lake Drive to Port Au Peck Avenue.

Roadways that will experience heavy traffic flow will be Port Au Peck Avenue from Myrtle Avenue to Eatontown Boulevard (County Rt 537), Eatontown Boulevard from State Highway 36 to Wyckoff Road/Broad Street in Eatontown, Main Street, Monmouth Road (State Hwy 71), and Oceanport Avenue near the Racetrack, and Oceanport Avenue from Port Au Peck Avenue to the Little Silver Line.

Drivers travelling on State Highway 36 will experience heavy traffic flow from Monmouth Park westbound to the Garden State Parkway. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes and plan for extra time when traveeling in the area."

Scott Walker "a distant second:"

7/31/15, "Walker trails in first Iowa poll since April, Trump in the lead," wxow.com, Madison, Wisc.

"For the first time in more than three months, Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wisconsin) is trailing in a poll of likely Republican Iowa caucus voters.

Donald Trump has surged into the lead in a new Gravis Marketing poll with support from 31 percent of those surveyed. Walker is a distant second at 15 percent, with Jeb Bush in third place at 10 percent.

Governor Walker has spent more time campaigning in Iowa than any other state since January and has been in the in the lead there in every poll since mid-April.

In the last poll Gravis conducted in Iowa May 28-29, Gov. Walker was at 17 percent, leading the rest of the GOP field by 4 points. But in that poll, Trump was polling at zero percent."

Scott Walker again says he'll skip Florida GOP primary, having in May 2015 suggested he'd to so "in deference to" Bush and Rubio:

7/28/15, "Walker Tells Private Group He'll Skip Florida Primary," Real Clear Politics, Rebecca Berg

"Scott Walker has insisted he will be able to “compete anywhere in the country” as a candidate for president — but, at a private event in St. Louis on Sunday, Walker said he does not plan to compete in Florida, contradicting his own public assertions that he would not skip that primary. During a fundraiser at the St. Louis home of Rex Sinquefield, Missouri’s most active Republican donor, Walker reasoned that it “doesn't make a ton of sense for him to pour cash into Florida” with Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio in the race, said one person who was present for Walker’s remarks. Bush is a former Florida governor, and Rubio is a senator from Florida....

A second person who was present confirmed that Walker said it would not make sense for him to try to compete in Florida with Rubio and Bush in the race.

Walker also predicted that the Republican primary contest could extend into April, the first person said, which would make any one primary, even in a large state such as Florida, less important to Walker’s overall strategy.

This rundown of Walker’s campaign strategy, which he shared with a closed-door audience of Missouri elected officials and Republican donors, marks a departure from how he has framed his path to the Republican nomination in public, particularly in regards to Florida.

In a May interview with radio host Laura Ingraham, Walker made headlines when he suggested that he might pass over the Florida primary, one of the first winner-take-all contests, because the home-field advantage for Bush and Rubio would be too strong.

"I don't think there's a state out there we wouldn't play in, other than maybe Florida, where Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio are...essentially tied," he said.

But Walker later attempted to walk back that remark, telling reporters during a trip to Florida in June: "If I didn't think I could compete, I wouldn't be here today.”

His comments to Ingraham, Walker added, were merely “in deference to two favorite sons here in Florida,” the New York Times reported. “And I thought that Gov. Bush and Sen. Rubio certainly would have a competitive advantage over anybody because of their presence as favorite sons in this state and having won statewide elections.”

In a statement to RealClearPolitics on Tuesday, Walker’s campaign echoed those remarks by Walker in June, insisting he intends to “play everywhere."

“The governor is going to play everywhere as evidenced by his travel to 11 states since becoming a candidate,” said AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for Walker. "We have long said Gov. Walker has appeal with voters of all kinds across all states, but we have also acknowledged the obvious that there are two Floridians in the race.""...
