“President Donald Trump came to the Charleston Civic Center Tuesday night to campaign for West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey in his battle against incumbent Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., in the November general election.
“You’re not just voting for a candidate,” Trump told about 10,000 supporters. “You’re voting for who controls the (U.S.) House and the Senate.
“A vote for Patrick Morrisey is simply a vote to make America great again.”
Morrisey, who defeated Rep. Evan Jenkins, R-W.Va., in the Republican primary election in May, is running several points behind Manchin in recent polls.
“Patrick Morrisey is a little behind right now,” Republican Gov. Jim Justice acknowledged while sharing the podium with Trump. “He needs your help.”…
Trump said Manchin consistently voted with Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama. But, the president said, Manchin voted against the travel ban on people from largely Muslim countries, voted against the GOP tax cut and voted against a border wall with Mexico.
“He votes against the people of West Virginia,” Trump said. “He just can’t do that.”
The president said his supporters need to vote for Republican candidates in November to maintain GOP control of Congress and state legislatures, as well as to keep the momentum the president says he has built since being elected in 2016.
Voting for Democrats is a vote for the party that wants to destroy the coal industry, Trump said.
“The Democrats want to turn the country into one big sanctuary city for criminal aliens,” he said.
“When I came here originally, West Virginia, frankly, was down and out,” Trump said, referring to a visit in 2016. “Now the state leads the nation in GDP growth.”
“Things are getting better in West Virginia,” Justice said earlier in the evening. “They truly are. We’re on the move in a lot of ways.”
Justice said West Virginians know how great the Mountain State is, and he said the rest of the country is starting to recognize it too.
Morrisey also attacked Manchin’s record, referring to the incumbent senator as “Liberal Joe.”
“Liberal Joe is no friend of President Trump,” Morrisey said.
“One of the best ways to help President Trump is to send me to the Senate,” Morrisey said. “I’m going to be the conservative fighter you’ll rely on.””…
