Intelgate-Jan. 2017 intel report clearly stated it made no assessment of impact on election except that it had no effect on vote tally. Therefore no claim of Russian “interference” is possible despite many wanting US taxpayer funded war with Russia. Further, it was never an ‘intel community’ assessment since key intel agencies weren’t included-Jack Matlock, Consortium News

.
7/3/18, “Former US Envoy to Moscow Calls Intelligence Report on Alleged Russian Interference ‘Politically Motivated’,“ Consortium News, Jack Matlock

“Prominent journalists and politicians seized upon a shabby, politically motivated, “intelligence” report as proof of “Russian interference” in the U.S. election without the pretense of due diligence, argues Jack Matlock, a former U.S. ambassador in Moscow. ”

“Did the U.S. “intelligence community” judge that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election?

Most commentators seem to think so. Every news report I have read of the planned meeting of Presidents Trump and Putin in July refers to “Russian interference” as a fact and asks whether the matter will be discussed. Reports that President Putin denied involvement in the election are scoffed at, usually with a claim that the U.S. “intelligence community” proved Russian interference. In fact, the U.S. “intelligence community” has not done so. The intelligence community as a whole has not been tasked to make a judgment and some key members of that community did not participate in the report that is routinely cited as “proof” of “Russian interference.”

I spent the 35 years of my government service with a “top secret” clearance. When I reached the rank of ambassador and also worked as Special Assistant to the President for National Security, I also had clearances for “codeword” material. At that time, intelligence reports to the president relating to Soviet and European affairs were routed through me for comment. I developed at that time a “feel” for the strengths and weaknesses of the various American intelligence agencies. It is with that background that I read the January 6, 2017 report of three intelligence agencies: the CIA, FBI, and NSA.

This report is labeled “Intelligence Community Assessment,” but in fact it is not that. A report of the intelligence community in my day would include the input of all the relevant intelligence agencies and would reveal whether all agreed with the conclusions. Individual agencies did not hesitate to “take a footnote” or explain their position if they disagreed with a particular assessment. A report would not claim to be that of the “intelligence community” if any relevant agency was omitted.

The report states that it represents the findings of three intelligence agencies: CIA, FBI, and NSA, but even that is misleading in that it implies that there was a consensus of relevant analysts in these three agencies. In fact, the report was prepared by a group of analysts from the three agencies pre-selected by their directors, with the selection process generally overseen by James Clapper, then Director of National Intelligence (DNI). Clapper told the Senate in testimony May 8, 2017, that it was prepared by “two dozen or so analysts—hand-picked, seasoned experts from each of the contributing agencies.” If you can hand-pick the analysts, you can hand-pick the conclusions. The analysts selected would have understood what Director Clapper wanted since he made no secret of his views. Why would they endanger their careers by not delivering?

What should have struck any congressperson or reporter was that the procedure Clapper followed was the same as that used in 2003 to produce the report falsely claiming that Saddam Hussein had retained stocks of weapons of mass destruction. That should be worrisome enough to inspire questions, but that is not the only anomaly.

The DNI has under his aegis a National Intelligence Council whose officers can call any intelligence agency with relevant expertise to draft community assessments. It was created by Congress after 9/11 specifically to correct some of the flaws in intelligence collection revealed by 9/11. Director Clapper chose not to call on the NIC, which is curious since its duty is “to act as a bridge between the intelligence and policy communities.”

Unusual FBI Participation

During my time in government, a judgment regarding national security would include reports from, as a minimum, the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) of the State Department. The FBI was rarely, if ever, included unless the principal question concerned law enforcement within the United States. NSA might have provided some of the intelligence used by the other agencies but normally did not express an opinion regarding the substance of reports.

What did I notice when I read the January report? There was no mention of INR or DIA! The exclusion of DIA might be understandable since its mandate deals primarily with military forces, except that the report attributes some of the Russian activity to the GRU, Russian military intelligence. DIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, is the U.S. intelligence organ most expert on the GRU. Did it concur with this attribution? The report doesn’t say.

The omission of INR [Bureau of Intelligence and Research of the State Dept.] is more glaring since a report on foreign political activity could not have been that of the U.S. intelligence community without its participation. After all, when it comes to assessments of foreign intentions and foreign political activity, the State Department’s intelligence service is by far the most knowledgeable and competent. In my day, it reported accurately on Gorbachev’s reforms when the CIA leaders were advising that Gorbachev had the same aims as his predecessors.

This is where due diligence comes in. The first question responsible journalists and politicians should have asked is “Why is INR not represented? Does it have a different opinion? If so, what is that opinion? Most likely the official answer would have been that this is “classified information.” But why should it be classified? If some agency heads come to a conclusion and choose (or are directed) to announce it publicly, doesn’t the public deserve to know that one of the key agencies has a different opinion?

The second question should have been directed at the CIA, NSA, and FBI: did all their analysts agree with these conclusions or were they divided in their conclusions? What was the reason behind hand-picking analysts and departing from the customary practice of enlisting analysts already in place and already responsible for following the issues involved?

State Department Intel Silenced

As I was recently informed by a senior official, the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence Research did, in fact, have a different opinion but was not allowed to express it. So the January report was not one of the “intelligence community,” but rather of three intelligence agencies, two of which have no responsibility or necessarily any competence to judge foreign intentions. The job of the FBI is to enforce federal law. The job of NSA is to intercept the communications of others and to protect ours. It is not staffed to assess the content of what is intercepted; that task is assumed by others, particularly the CIA, the DIA (if it is military) or the State Department’s INR (if it is political).

The second thing to remember is that reports of the intelligence agencies reflect the views of the heads of the agencies and are not necessarily a consensus of their analysts’ views. The heads of both the CIA and FBI are political appointments, while the NSA chief is a military officer; his agency is a collector of intelligence rather than an analyst of its import, except in the fields of cryptography and communications security.

One striking thing about the press coverage and Congressional discussion of the January report, and of subsequent statements by CIA, FBI, and NSA heads is that questions were never posed regarding the position of the State Department’s INR, or whether the analysts in the agencies cited were in total agreement with the conclusions.

Let’s put these questions aside for the moment and look at the report itself. On the first page of text, the following statement leapt to my attention:

“We did not make an assessment of the impact that Russian activities had on the outcome of the 2016 election. The US Intelligence Community is charged with monitoring and assessing the intentions, capabilities, and actions of foreign actors; it does not analyze US political processes or US public opinion.”

Now, how can one judge whether activity “interfered” with an election without assessing its impact? After all,

if the activity had no impact on the outcome of the election,

it could not be properly termed interference.

This disclaimer, however, has not prevented journalists and politicians from citing the report as proof that “Russia interfered” in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

As for particulars, the report is full of assertion, innuendo, and description of “capabilities” but largely devoid of any evidence to substantiate its assertions. This is “explained” by claiming that much of the evidence is classified and cannot be disclosed without revealing sources and methods. The assertions are made with “high confidence” or occasionally, “moderate confidence.”

Having read many intelligence reports I can tell you that if there is irrefutable evidence of something it will be stated as a fact. The use of the term “high confidence” is what most normal people would call “our best guess.” “Moderate confidence” means “some of our analysts think this might be true.”

Guccifer 2.0: A Fabrication

Among the assertions are that a persona calling itself “Guccifer 2.0” is an instrument of the GRU, and that it hacked the emails on the Democratic National Committee’s computer [and Podesta’s too?] and conveyed them to Wikileaks. What the report does not explain is that it is easy for a hacker or foreign intelligence service to leave a false trail. In fact, a program developed by CIA with NSA assistance to do just that has been leaked and published.

Retired senior NSA technical experts have examined the “Guccifer 2.0” data on the web and have concluded that “Guccifer 2.0’s” data did not involve a hack across the web but was locally downloaded. Further, the data had been tampered with and manipulated, leading to the conclusion that “Guccifer 2.0” is a total fabrication.

The report’s assertions regarding the supply of the DNC emails to Wikileaks are dubious, but its final statement in this regard is important: “Disclosures through WikiLeaks did not contain any evident forgeries.”  In other words, what was disclosed was the truth! So, Russians are accused of “degrading our democracy” by revealing that the DNC was trying to fix the nomination of a particular candidate rather than allowing the primaries and state caucuses to run their course.

I had always thought that transparency is consistent with democratic values. Apparently those who think that the truth can degrade democracy have a rather bizarre—to put it mildly–concept of democracy.

Most people, hearing that it is a “fact” that “Russia” interfered in our election must think that Russian government agents hacked into vote counting machines and switched votes to favor a particular candidate. This, indeed, would be scary, and would justify the most painful sanctions. But this is the one thing that the “intelligence” report of January 6, 2017, states did not happen. Here is what it said: “DHS [the Department of Homeland Security] assesses that the types of systems Russian actors targeted or compromised were not involved in vote tallying.”

This is an important statement by an agency that is empowered to assess the impact of foreign activity on the United States. Why was it not consulted regarding other aspects of the study? Or—was it in fact consulted and refused to endorse the findings? Another obvious question any responsible journalist or competent politician should have asked.

Prominent American journalists and politicians seized upon this shabby, politically motivated, report as proof of “Russian interference” in the U.S. election without even the pretense of due diligence. They have objectively acted as co-conspirators in an effort to block any improvement in relations with Russia, even though cooperation with Russia to deal with common dangers is vital to both countries.

This is only part of the story of how, without good reason, U.S.-Russian relations have become dangerously confrontational. God willing and the crick don’t rise, I’ll be musing about other aspects soon.”

Russiagate or Intelgate? Stephen F. Cohen, The Nation, 2/7/18

.
2/7/18, “Russiagate of Intelgate?” The Nation, Stephen F. Cohen

Stephen F. “Cohen first raised the question of “Intelgate,” perhaps coining the word, in the first half of 2017. He returns to it here.”…

“Steele’s dossier, which alleged that Trump had been compromised by the Kremlin in various ways for several years even preceding his presidential candidacy, was the foundational document of the Russiagate narrative, at least from the time its installments began to be leaked to the American media in the summer of 2016, to the US “Intelligence Community Assessment” of January 2017 (when BuzzFeed also published the dossier), the same month that FBI Director James Comey “briefed” President-elect Trump on the dossier—apparently in an effort to intimidate him—and on to today’s Mueller investigation….

The dossier and subsequent ICA report remain the underlying sources for proponents of the Russiagate narrative of “Trump-Putin collusion.”…

Where, then, Cohen asks, did Steele get his information?

According to Steele and his many stenographers—which include his American employers, Democratic Party Russiagaters, the mainstream media, and even progressive publications—it came from his “deep connections in Russia,” specifically from retired and current Russian intelligence officials in or near the Kremlin [1/5/18, NY Times]. From the moment the dossier began to be leaked to the American media, this seemed highly implausible (as reporters who took his bait should have known) for several reasons:

§ Steele has not returned to Russia after leaving his post there in the early 1990s. Since then, the main Russian intelligence agency, the FSB, has undergone many personnel and other changes, especially after 2000, and especially in or near Putin’s Kremlin. Did Steele really have such “connections” so many years later?

§ Even if he did, would these purported Russian insiders really have collaborated with this “former” British intelligence agent under what is so widely said to be the ever-vigilant eye of the ruthless “former KGB agent” Vladimir Putin, thereby risking their positions, income, perhaps freedom, as well as the well-being of their families?

§ Originally it was said that his Russian sources were highly paid by Steele. Arguably, this might have warranted the risk. But subsequently Steele’s employer and head of Fusion GPS, Glenn Simpson, wrote in The New York Times that “Steele’s sources in Russia…were not paid.” If the Putin Kremlin’s purpose was to put Trump in the White House, why then would these “Kremlin-connected” sources have contributed to Steele’s anti-Trump project without financial or political gain—only with considerable risk?…

And indeed we now know that Steele had at least three other [non-Russian] “sources” for the dossier, ones not previously mentioned by him or his employer. There was the information from foreign intelligence agencies provided by Brennan to Steele or to the FBI, which we also now know was collaborating with Steele. There was the contents of a “second Trump-Russia dossier” [1/30/18, UK Guardian: “The Shearer memo was provided to the FBI in October 2016. It was handed to them by Steele –who had been given it by an American contact.”] prepared by people personally close to Hillary Clinton and who shared their “findings” with Steele. And [third] most intriguingly, there was the “research” provided by Nellie Ohr, wife of a top Department of Justice official, Bruce Ohr, who, according to the Republican memo, “was employed by Fusion GPS” to assist in the cultivation of opposition research on Trump. Ohr later provided the FBI with all of his wife’s opposition research.” Most likely, it found its way into Steele’s dossier. (Mrs. Ohr was a trained Russian Studies scholar with a PhD from Stanford and a onetime assistant professor at Vassar, and thus, it must have seemed, an ideal collaborator for Steele.)”…

[Added: Ohr and his Russia scholar wife are mentioned in US Senate Judiciary Committee letter of 1/4/18, 2/6/18 version with fewer redactions. page 5, pdf p.7: ("Filings" in first sentence refers to Christopher Steele's then recent relevant court filings in UK):

More on Ohr: 12/11/2017: “A senior Justice Department official [Bruce Ohr] demoted last week for concealing his meetings with the men behind the anti-Trump “dossier” had even closer ties to Fusion GPS, the firm responsible for the incendiary document, than have been disclosed, Fox News has confirmed: The official’s wife worked for Fusion GPS during the 2016 election.

Contacted by Fox News, investigators for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) confirmed that Nellie H. Ohr, wife of the demoted official, Bruce G. Ohr, worked for the opposition research firm last year [2016]. The precise nature of Mrs. Ohr’s duties – including whether she worked on the dossier – remains unclear but a review of her published works available online reveals Mrs. Ohr has written extensively on Russia-related subjects. HPSCI staff confirmed to Fox News that she was paid by Fusion GPS through the summer and fall of 2016.” 12/11/2017, “Wife of demoted DOJ official worked for firm behind anti-Trump dossier,“ James Rosen, Jake Gibson, Fox News]

(continuing): “We are left, then, with a vital, ramifying question: How much of the “intelligence information” in Steele’s dossier actually came from Russian insiders, if any? (This uncertainly alone should stop Fox News’s Sean Hannity and others from declaring that the Kremlin used Steele—and Hillary Clinton—to pump its “propaganda and disinformation” into America. Such [seemingly] pro-Trump allegations, like those of Russiagate itself, only fuel the new Cold War, which risks becoming actual war any day, from Syria to Ukraine.)

And so, Cohen concludes, we are left with even more ramifying questions:

§ Was Russiagate produced by the primary leaders of the US intelligence community, not just the FBI? If so, it is the most perilous political scandal in modern American history, and the most detrimental to American democracy. And if so, it does indeed, as zealous promoters of Russiagate assert, make Watergate pale in significance. (To understand more, we will need to learn more, including whether Trump associates other than Carter Page and Paul Manafort were officially surveilled by any of the agencies involved. And whether they were surveilled in order to monitor Trump himself, on the assumption they were or would be in close proximity to him, as the president once suggested in a tweet.)

§ If Russiagate involved collusion among US intelligence agencies, as now seems likely, why was it undertaken? There are various possibilities. Out of loathing for Trump? Out of institutional opposition to his promise of better relations—“cooperation”—with Russia? Or out of personal ambition? Did Brennan, for example, aspire to remaining head of the CIA, or to a higher position, in a Hillary Clinton administration?

§ What was President Obama’s role in any of this? Or to resort to the Watergate question: What did he know and when did he know it? And what did he do? The same questions would need to be asked about his White House aides and other appointees.

Whatever the full answers, there is no doubt that Obama acted on the Russiagate allegations. He cited them for the sanctions he imposed on Russia in December 2016, which led directly to the case of General Michael Flynn (not for doing anything wrong with Russia but for “lying to the FBI”); to the worsening of the new US-Russian Cold War; and thus to the perilous relationship inherited by President Trump, who has in turn been thwarted by Russiagate in his attempts to improve relations through “cooperation” with Putin.

§ With all of this in mind, and assuming Trump knew most of it, did he really have any choice in firing FBI Director Comey, for which he is now unfairly being investigated by Mueller? We might also ask, given Comey’s role during Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign (for which she and her team loudly condemned him), whether as president she would have had to fire him.

Listening almost daily to the legion of former US intel officers condemn Russiagate skeptics ever more loudly and persistently in the media,we may wonder if they are increasingly fearful it will become known that Russiagate was mostly Intelgate. For that we will need a new bipartisan Senate Church Committee of the 1970s, which investigated and exposed misdeeds by US intelligence agencies and which led to important reforms that are no longer the preventive measures against abuses of power they were intended to be. (Ideally, everyone involved would be granted amnesty for recent misdeeds, ending all talk of “jail time,” on the condition they now testify truthfully.) But such an inclusive investigation of Intelgate would require the support of Democratic members of Congress, which no longer seems possible.”
……………………

Added: Linked above, “Second Trump-Russia dossier,” “the Shearer memo” is among at least 3 other “Russiagate” sources in addition to alleged “Russians:”

“The Shearer memo was provided to the FBI in October 2016. It was handed to them by Steele –who had been given it by an American contact.”

1/30/18, “Second Trump-Russia dossier being assessed by FBI,” UK Guardian, and

“The FBI inquiry into alleged Russian collusion in the 2016 US presidential election has been given a second memo that independently set out some of the same allegations made in a dossier by Christopher Steele, the British former spy.

The second memo was written by Cody Shearer, a controversial political activist and former journalist who was close to the Clinton White House in the 1990s….

The Guardian has been told the FBI investigation is still assessing details in the “Shearer memo” and is pursuing intriguing leads….

The Shearer memo was provided to the FBI in October 2016. It was handed to them by Steele – who had been given it by an American contact – after the FBI requested the former MI6 agent provide any documents or evidence that could be useful in its investigation, according to multiple sources.

The Guardian was told Steele warned the FBI he could not vouch for the veracity of the Shearer memo, but that he was providing a copy because it corresponded with what he had separately heard from his own independent sources.

Among other things, both documents allege Donald Trump was compromised during a 2013 trip to Moscow that involved lewd acts in a five-star hotel.

The Shearer memo cites an unnamed source within Russia’s FSB, the state security service. The Guardian cannot verify any of the claims….

Steele’s dossier, his motives for writing it and his decision to share it remain controversial….He says he approached the FBI about concerns he had about links between Russia and the Trump campaign after he was commissioned to investigate the matter by a private investigative firm called Fusion GPS on behalf of the firm’s clients.”…
……………………

Comment: British subject Christopher Steele had not set foot in Russia or made any up-to-date contacts there for over two decades at the time he assembled the “explosive” 2016 Trump-Russia “dossier.” His entire career in Russia was at most 3 years. Of that time, in the first year and few months Russia didn’t even exist as an independent country. The Soviet Union didn’t dissolve until Dec. 1991. Steele arrived in late 1990 and left in 1993 to return to the UK. Source: Steele was married in the UK in July 1990 and “was posted to Moscow months later.” Steele left Russia sometime in 1993. And, “Steele has not returned to Russia after leaving his post there in the early 1990s.” He couldn’t enter Russia–or have many phone calls or emails returned from “contacts” there–after 1999 because his name was on a list of outed spies or former spies, if anyone needed such confirmation. Most reports of this 1999 event and names involved have been scrubbed, though a 1999 NY Times article, not mentioning names of those outed, describes the calamity for the UK that many spies’ names were published online in an act of vengeance by former M.I.6 spy Richard Tomlinson:

5/14/1999, “Britain Closes Web Site With Spies’ Names,” NY Times, Warren Hoge

“An embittered former British spy has used the Internet to make public the names of a large number of secret agents, but officials in London said today that the Web site had been shut down and that no duplicates had surfaced.

The Foreign Office said…the lives of more than 100 people were put in jeopardy by the action, which it attributed to Richard Tomlinson, 35, an agent of the Secret Intelligence Service, formerly known as M.I.6, who was let go in 1995 and later served a jail term for violating Britain’s Official Secrets Act.”…

A Jan. 2017 Daily Mail article mentions in passing that in 1999 Steele and his partner Burrows were among those named as MI6 agents on a list published online by disaffected former British spy Richard Tomlinson. Tomlinson is also mentioned in above 1999 NY Times excerpt. The Daily Mail article doesn’t elaborate on the significance of this as it relates to Steele and Russia. Although Steele left Russia in 1993 and was assigned other duties by the UK government, publication of his name on that list confirmed he had worked undercover as a spy at some point. This likely wasn’t news to anyone in the spy business in Russia, but it’s preferable not to have such information publicly documented:

1/12/2017, “Kremlin blames UK for Trump ‘sex storm’ as top Tory says relations with Russia are ‘about as bad as it could get’ without us being at WAR,“ UK Daily Mail, by Larisa Brown, Defence Corresondent for The Daily Mail, and Martin Robinson, Sam Greenhill, Sam Tonkin, and Dave Burke for Mailonline

“Mr Steele’s business partner Christopher Burrows was also named as a former MI6 agent, but has not been linked to the dossier….

Both men were named as MI6 agents in 1999 when they appeared on a list published online by former British spy Richard Tomlinson.”…

Below is screen shot of the above sentence referencing the 1999 outing of names of many past and present UK spies including Steele:

Intelgate: Deeply corrupt US Senate Intelligence Committee implies that all countries must accept what it terms "the US led liberal international order," apparently by fiat of the US, and countries that don't submit to this "order" are said to be "undermining" it. US voters and taxpayers have never agreed to dictate or police a world order

.
The American people are grateful for any country not on board with a so-called "U.S.-led liberal international order." Such an "order" puts American lives in danger. For example, after Obama's effectively bombing Iran via Stuxnet cyber attacks, every country in the world would be justified in bombing the US in retaliation: “Achieving, with computer code, what until then could be accomplished only by bombing a country or sending in agents to plant explosives….“This is the first attack of a major nature in which a cyber attack was used to effect physical destruction,” said former CIA chief Michael V. Hayden. “No country’s infrastructure is more dependent on computer systems, and thus more vulnerable to attack, than that of the United States. It is only a matter of time, most experts believe, before it becomes the target of the same kind of weapon that the Americans have used, secretly, against Iran.”” 6/1/2012, “Obama Order Sped Up Wave of Cyberattacks Against Iran,“ NY Times, David E. Sanger (“This article is adapted from “Confront and Conceal: Obama’s Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power,” [by David E. Sanger of the New York Times] to be published by Crown on Tuesday.”)

The newly released, unclassified 7-page report -- whose conclusions the Republican-led committee previewed in May -- put to rest some questions that had arisen about the integrity of the assessment and the political agenda of the agencies that authored it."....

Comment: To CBS News: No report from this corrupt committee "puts to rest" any questions on any subject. If this so-called "Republican controlled" committee wants wants to provide us with the original hard evidence of what it considers to be "proof," that would be a beginning. But it can't do that of course----it's "classified."

Trump allows Intelgate to continue: Another criminal 'Diversity Lottery' recipient, Pakistani Imran Awan agrees to plea deal for bank fraud offiered by Trump DOJ Chief Sessions

.
7/3/18, "Sessions DOJ Declares ‘No Evidence’ Imran Awan Broke Law with Congress’s Computer Systems," Breitbart, R. Kraychik, Plea deal "allows Awan to plead guilty to making a false statement on a loan or credit application."

Imran Awan applied to the US Diversity Lottery program at age 14. He and his family were chosen. He arrived at age 17, is now age 38. Being "shared" US government employees exempted Awans from usual oversight. For extended periods they worked from their native Pakistan:

Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, "Federal probe into House technology worker Imran Awan yields intrigue, no evidence of espionage," Washington Post, Shawn Boburg

"Chosen in a lottery"

"Imran Awan, now 38, was a 14-year-old living in Pakistan when he filled out an application for a U.S. program that provides limited green cards through a lottery system, his lawyers said. He and his family were chosen. [Approx. 1993] He arrived at 17, got a job working at a fast-food restaurant and went to community college in Northern Virginia. He transferred to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and earned a degree in information technology.

Awan became a U.S. citizen in 2004, his lawyers said, the same year he was hired for a part-time job as an IT specialist in the office of Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Fla.). Awan had gotten to know some of Wexler’s staffers as an intern for a company that provided services to the office.

As an IT specialist, Awan set up printers and work email accounts for new employees, and did technical troubleshooting. Charismatic and accommodating, he became a popular choice among House Democrats and soon cobbled together more than a dozen part-time jobs as what is known as a “shared employee” on the Hill, floating between offices on an as-needed basis.

Such arrangements came under scrutiny in 2008 when House Inspector General James J. Cornell testified that there was “inadequate oversight” over shared employees.

“In most instances, they have all the freedom of a vendor and all the benefits of an employee without the accountability one would expect with an employee,” Cornell told lawmakers. IT specialists, he noted, “present an additional risk in that they often have access to multiple office’s data outside of both the oversight of congressional office staff and the visibility of House security personnel."

As demand for Awan’s services grew, he began recommending his family members, who had less formal training. His brother Abid, 33, started working on Capitol Hill in 2005. His wife, 33, joined in 2007. A friend, Rao Abbas, 37, who had most recently worked as a manager at a McDonald’s, was hired in 2012. And Imran’s youngest brother, Jamal, 24, started in 2014. Each held part-time jobs in multiple Democratic congressional offices."...

"(P.L. 101-649) to stimulate “new seed” immigration from parts of the world that are under-represented in the U.S....To be eligible, applicants must have a high school education or its equivalent, or 2 years experience in an occupation which requires at least 2 years of training or experience, and must be admissible under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The applicant or the applicant’s spouse must be a native of one of the countries that qualify for the diversity visa lottery. Applications must be submitted electronically. Lottery winners are selected randomly by a computer, and the State Department notifies the winners. Winners then have a short time period to file the necessary paperwork demonstrating that they are admissible as legal permanent residents. In person interviews are then scheduled. Lottery winners may also bring their spouses and minor children to the U.S. as derivatives."...

Added: "Treason" fans suddenly silent on Awan brothers who were invited into US taxpayer funded government offices by members of Congress who allowed them to remain for 12+ years. Awans did much of their US government work from their native Pakistan, being "shared employees" exempted them from  usual oversight. GOP "leadership" silent about their Democrat pals who kept Awans around:

10/30/17, "California’s Attorney General Xavier Becerra And The Awan Scandal," Disobedient Media, Kenneth Whittle (Becerra is former US Rep. Xavier Becerra. He's among democrats who first hired Imran Awan in 2004. Becerra remained in congress until Jan. 24, 2017)

"Representatives of the House leadership, who have yet to offer any support for a formal investigation into the ongoing scandal, were absent from hearing when Freedom Caucus members Louie Gohmert (TX), Jim Jordan (OH), Steve King (IA), Ron DeSantis (FL), and Scott Perry (PA), interviewed Luke Rosiak of the Daily Caller and Tom Fitton, President of Judicial Watch.

Rosiak, the journalist responsible for breaking coverage of the Awan scandal, opened the hearing by voicing his concerns regarding the continued silence from Capitol Hill in relation to the unfolding allegations of misconduct. He said that there had been “substantial misinformation put into the public realm about this matter, both maximizing it and minimizing it.”

Rosiak went on to explain that investigators have learned that Imran Awan and his family had not only accessed a congressional server without authorization 5,400 times, but that Imran Awan would conduct House IT work for months at a time while he was located in Pakistan.

Rosiak’s statements were followed by Judicial Watch’s Tom Fitton, who added: “The best-case scenario ain’t all that great. You had an ongoing criminal enterprise operating under the noses of 40 House members, and the responsible administrative officials here in the House of Representatives, and put all of the details of his scandal aside, inflammatory details, what is the House doing right now to make sure this isn’t going on right now?”

According to Sara Carter, of Circa, Fitton expressed concern that the Justice Department might not raise these issues for fear of embarrassing members of both parties.

After hearing about Imran’s access to congressional servers while in Pakistan, Rep. Gohmert (TX) responded: “I did not realize that we had someone who would live in Pakistan and get paid the maximum that any House employee could get paid and he was doing his information technology work, his computer work, for the House of Representatives from Pakistan. This is just mind boggling,”

Rep. Perry (PA) also chimed in, voicing concerns regarding an increasingly overt two-tier justice system. Perry explained:..."We have a Justice Department, FBI… the ferocity with which laws are enforced– it’s just not...uniform lately.”

Rep. King (IA) stated, “that Democratic members of Congress who serve on intelligence committees would, by the nature of their work, correspond about sensitive information.” His sentiments refuted claims made by former DNC chairwoman, Rep. Wasserman-Schultz, who argued that the Awans did not have access to any sensitive material.

The concerns expressed at this latest hearing, or the issues surrounding California Attorney General Xavier Beccera, are extremely significant in terms of national security. That the press has shown so little interest in the scandal is alarming. Disobedient Media will continue to report on revelations stemming from the Awan scandal as they unfold."

"The Washington Post has reported that investigators found that Awan and his relatives made unauthorized access to a congressional server 5,400 times, but Wasserman Schultz has defended Awan calling the entire matter a “right-wing media circus fringe.”...

Following discussion, Rep. Gohmert spoke to The DC [Daily Caller] and was shocked to learn that Awan would do House IT work months at a time while in Pakistan....

Gohmert continued..."But for a month, two months, three months to be handling that clear across the other side of the world for months at a time — that I had no idea anybody would even think about trying to do something like that.”"...

Midsummer tankers trapped in ice near Russian Arctic port in Gulf of Ob, icebreakers called in-Barents Observer

.
"«The global warming, which there has been so much talk about for such a long time, seems to have receded a little and we are returning to the standards of the 1980s and 1990s,» says company representative Andrey Smirnov."

6/21/18, "At midsummer, tankers get ice-trapped near Russian Arctic port," thebarentsobserver.com, by Atle Staalesen

"Shipping in the Gulf of Ob is paralysed and the situation complicated, icebreaker company Rosatomflot says."

"It is late June, but the winter has not abandoned the Gulf of Ob. The shallow bay, which houses two of Russia’s biggest Arctic out-shipment terminals for oil and gas, remains packed with fast ice. It has created a  complicated situation, Rosatomflot says.

The state company which manages the Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers, confirms that  independent shipping in the area is «paralysed» and that LNG carriers and tankers are stuck.

The shipping companies had expected the Gulf of Ob to be free of ice in the course of June and that icebreaker assistance would not be necessary. They were wrong.

According to Rosatomflot, there appears to be a need for icebreaker services in the area at least until after the first week of July. There are currently two nuclear-powered icebreakers in the Gulf of Ob, the «Taymyr» and the «Vaygach». In addition, there are several smaller tugs and icebreakers working in the waters around the Sabetta port.

According to the icebreaker company, this is the first summer in four years that the Gulf of Ob is packed with this much ice.

«The global warming, which there has been so much talk about for such a long time, seems to have receded a little and we are returning to the standards of the 1980s and 1990s,» says company representative Andrey Smirnov.

The Yamal LNG plant is fully dependent on smooth shipping to and from the port of Sabetta. A fleet of 15 powerful top ice-class carriers are being built for the project. The ships are capable of independently breaking through more than two meter thick ice. Commercial shipments from Sabetta started in early December 2017.

Further south, company Gazprom Neft is operating the Novy Port project, which is built to be able to deliver up to eight million tons of oil per year. A fleet of six tankers are being built for the Novy Port. The first vessels of the new fleet, the «Shturman Albanov» and the «Shturman Malygin» were put on the water in early 2016. The third fleet tanker, the “Shturman Ovtsyn” set course for the history books when it in mid-winter 2017 left the yard of the Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea, made it through the Bering Strait and sailed all the way to Yamal. Later, also the «Shturman Shcherbinin» and the «Shturman Koshelev» were built.

Data from the Northern Sea Route Administration show that three of the Novy Port tankers and three of the Yamal LNG carriers currently are in the waters of the sea route. The «Christophe de Margerie» and the «Vladimir Rusanov» are near Sabetta, the «Boris Vilkitsky» is out in the Kara Sea.

Information from ship tracking service MarineTraffic shows that there also are a number of cargo vessels in Sabetta."

Summer of rage? No thanks, says former Democrat voter who's 'Walking Away' from abuse, rage, and ugliness of Democrat Party. NY City gay man Brandon Straka leads 'silent minority' from urban gay men to staunch liberal grandmothers in WalkAway campaign to leave Democrat Party-The Epoch Times

.
"For Ricky Roberts, the moment came after the Orlando nightclub shootings. “Trump said he was going to protect gay men, and he did, [with] the travel ban. Hillary was telling Americans not to ‘pick on all Muslims because of this,’” and that did not feel like protection, Roberts says."

6/28/18, "Viral ‘Walk Away’ Videos Highlight Growing Movement of Democrats Leaving the Party," The Epoch Times, by Celia Farber, News Analysis

"When actor James Woods tweeted out the hashtag “#WalkAway” in late June, even the alt-right missed the enormity of what lay beneath it. The Democratic Party had, in fact, struck an iceberg.

Brandon Straka
Some 5 million people on Facebook and YouTube have seen the video by now. A very handsome gay man, who you just assume is about to scold you on progressive talking points, instead says this:

“Once upon a time, I was a liberal. Well, to be honest, less than a year ago, I was still a liberal.

“I reject a system which allows an ambitious, misinformed and dogmatic mob to suppress free speech, create false narratives, and apathetically steamroll over the truth.”

And then this devastating line—the Rosa Parks moment of the video:

“I reject hate.”

If Democratic strategists were still able to watch the rest of the video without suffering a nervous breakdown, they’d see that it quickly got worse.

“These are the reasons why I became a liberal. And these are the same reasons why I am now walking away.”

Tidal Wave

Meet Brandon Straka, the unlikely liberator and new face of the “silent minority” of Americans who’ve been cast out by family and friends, fired from jobs, and forced into silent social ghettos for their failure to “get it” about how hateful and dangerous Donald Trump is, and why he and all his supporters should be subjected to an ever-expanding social and professional fatwah.

Since Straka published his confessional video on May 26, his life as a New York City hairdresser and aspiring actor has been overtaken by a tidal wave.

While speaking to The Epoch Times about the explosion of his #WalkAway campaign, Straka had to occasionally stop to go style a client’s hair, all while fielding a constant barrage of newcomers’ testimonial letters, videos, and emails—over 1,000 a day.

They gather at his two Facebook groups, “The Unsilent Minority” and “WalkAway Campaign.” Those who have the courage post their own video testimonials about the moment when the abuse, rage, and ugliness of the Democrats caused them to finally leave the party and “walk away.”

“This is so much more than a hashtag on Twitter,” he said. “This is a testimonial campaign, a grassroots movement that is going to change the political landscape of this country.”

And that’s the astonishing twist here: If these people have been driven into the arms of Donald Trump, who’s left on the left?

Lifelong Democrats

Those who are walking away are not Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables,” but rather, in many cases, lifelong Democrats who simply could not take it any longer and have longed for this very moment, when somebody like them would make it safe for them to come out of the closet and speak their minds.

From urban gay men to staunch liberal grandmothers, from a punk drag queen with black lips to a tattooed lesbian with a mohawk, those posting testimonials all had a breaking point, a moment when they decided to “walk away.”

Lea Anna Bright, in a mohawk, looks into the camera and says in a slow, simmering voice: “This is a Vice article I am reading right now. It says, ‘The activist left doesn’t give a shit about your calls for civility. Get ready for a summer of rage.’” She looks up. “This is where the party is going, and this is why I chose to walk away. Peace. Not for me. Bye.”

A man adjusts his video camera and sits back. The walls behind him are a tasteful grey-blue. He’s a gay, affluent, native New Yorker, and he’s coming out of the second closet of his life. For Ricky Roberts, the moment came after the Orlando nightclub shootings.

“Trump said he was going to protect gay men, and he did, [with] the travel ban. Hillary was telling Americans not to ‘pick on all Muslims because of this,’” and that did not feel like protection, Roberts says. “I swear to God, wanted to throw my shoe through the TV.

“At that point I was like, I can’t do it anymore. I really can’t.

“You know, listen, I’m a gay guy from New York City, but before that, I’m an American, I’m a patriot. I’m now an uncle.”

His assessment of the Democrats: “From immigration to everything, they are just a disaster.

“They’re anti-American, anti-common sense, rational—anything good, they’re against it.”

Manipulating Fear

Straka, who grew up in a small town in Nebraska, was on board with the fear and loathing campaign around Trump until he began asking people back home why they had voted for him. To his astonishment, they told him about Obama-era regulations that had crippled their small businesses.

He started to research media canards like the one about Trump supposedly mocking a disabled reporter. When he found that it was a total distortion, he kept going, his anger rising.

He eventually became “completely ‘red-pilled.'” And isolated. He told himself that he would have to give up his lifelong dream of becoming an actor if he hit the “publish” button on his video, but, encouraged by one conservative gay friend, he decided to go ahead.

“This was a matter of the media specifically using and manipulating people’s deepest fears, based on legitimate traumas,” he explained.

“Many gay people have experienced very serious homophobia and even physical violence. Can you imagine manipulating a domestic violence survivor’s fears just for political purposes? It’s insane.

“I was afraid of losing all my friends. As I began posting about these things on social media, people started attacking me and unfriending me.

“But I thought, ‘You know what, this is too important.’ Maybe it’s the fact that I’m a gay man and I’ve already been through this—people making up lies about what it means to be gay and trying to shame me. I was like, ‘I’m not doing it. I’m not doing this twice.’

“The more resentment I received, the stronger I got. Finally, I thought, ‘To hell with it. I’m just going to blow the lid off this whole thing and make this video.’”

The video has garnered 1.3 million views on his Facebook page and has been shared on many other popular pages. It is estimated to have reached some 5 million viewers so far.

There are some 27,000 followers of the Facebook group, with new people posting both video and text testimonials every day. Straka calls them “the patriots.”

“Initially, my focus was on the gay community because I was so angry at how they were [being terrorized],” Straka said. “Then I thought, why should I limit it to just us? They’re doing the same thing to black people. And Hispanic people. And frankly, they’re doing the same thing to everybody in one way or another.

“But it’s really the minorities in America who don’t feel like we have a choice. That’s what they keep telling us over and over:

‘You’re not safe on the right. They don’t want you on the right. They hate you on the right. You’re only safe with us. We are here to protect you.’

“Meanwhile, are you kidding me? You’re here to ‘protect’ me? All you are doing is use my fears to scare the [expletive] out of me—to terrify me and to try to manipulate the way that I vote.”

Libby Albert, one of the WalkAway Facebook group members, said,

“This is taking off,” citing the snowstorm of thousands of hashtags on Twitter. “It’s kind of incredible.”

Said another: “It’s kind of incredible. It’s OK. Walk away.”"

"Do you remember when Kathy Griffin made a  video of herself holding a stylized head of President Trump? Most of us thought that had ruined her career.  Nope. Take a look at this Seattle events magazine announcing an upcoming Kathy Griffin show.  I think you'll be interested to see the progression / regression of opinion as laid out by this announcement. This is far more than a left/right divide. This is an indicator of the difficulty in speaking truth to people who have tacitly agreed to destroy anyone who doesn't go along to get along, and to celebrate anyone who does."

Yes, yes, yes, George Soros said almost gleefully as he predicted riots in US streets-Newsweek, Jan. 23, 2012

"“Yes, yes, yes,” he (Soros) says, almost gleefully, predicting riots on US streets, which will be an excuse for strong arm tactics constraining individual liberty, "a break with the tradition of the United States."-Newsweek, Jan. 2012

1/23/2012, "George Soros on the Coming U.S. Class War," Newsweek.com, John Arlidge

"You know George Soros. He’s the investor’s investor—the man who still holds the record for making more money in a single day’s trading than anyone. He pocketed $1 billion betting against the British pound on “Black Wednesday” in 1992, when sterling lost 20 percent of its value in less than 24 hours and crashed out of the European exchange-rate mechanism. No wonder Brits call him, with a mix of awe and annoyance, “the man who broke the Bank of England.”...

Occupy Wall Street...will grow. It has “put on the agenda issues that the institutional left has failed to put on the agenda for a quarter of a century.” [Soros says]...(parag. 16)

“Yes, yes, yes,” he says, almost gleefully.

“It will be an excuse for cracking down and using strong-arm tactics to maintain law and order, which, carried to an extreme, could bring about a repressive political system, a society where individual liberty is much more constrained, which would be a break with the tradition of the United States.”"...(parag. 17, 4th parag. from end)
