US taxpayers armed and trained Syrian "rebel" forces now en route to Syria from Qatar, Obama assures his pal McCain US taxpayers will pay for "rebel" (Al Qaeda) mercenaries

"The first cell of Syrian rebels trained and armed by the CIA is making its way to the battlefield, President Barack Obama has reportedly told senators."

------------------------------------------

9/3/13, "CIA-Armed And Trained Syrian Rebels "On Way To Battlefield"," Zero Hedge

"It seems that the reason why Obama has been such a staunch supporter of a Syrian campaign without a land component, is because US-armed and trained Qatari mercenaries, also known elsewhere in the media as "rebels", are about to take to the battlefield (ignoring for a moment prior reports that American, Israeli and other troops have already long operated on Syrian territory).

The Telegraph reports that "the first cell of Syrian rebels trained and armed by the CIA is making its way to the battlefield, President Barack Obama has reportedly told senators. During a meeting at the White House, the president assured Senator John McCain that after months of delay the US was meeting its commitment to back moderate elements of the opposition. Mr Obama said that a 50-man cell, believed to have been trained by US special forces in Jordan."

More:
The deployment of the rebel unit seems to be the first tangible measure of support since Mr Obama announced in June that the US would begin providing the opposition with small arms.

Congressional opposition delayed the plan for several weeks and rebel commanders publicly complained the US was still doing nothing to match the Russian-made firepower of the Assad regime.

Mr McCain has been a chief critic of the White House's reluctance to become involved in Syria and has long demanded that Mr Obama provide the rebels with arms needed to overthrow the regime.
Still, one can't help but wonder why only 50 people? After all, if the Assad regime is so proficient with chemical weapons, all that would take to wipe out the Syrian version of the A-Team would be one relatively well placed WMD hit. After all, just like in Iraq, they serve WMDs at ever regime-controlled coffee shop, both grande and venti variations, right?

As for the punchline, or what happens after the surgical intervention is over?
"They're not trying to replace one dictator, Assad, who has been brutal... to only have al-Qaeda run Syria," Lindsey Graham said.
No, just replace it with a pro-Qatari/pro-Syria regime, which just may have a few Al-Qaeda participants in it, and which like in the case of Egypt, will last about two years top before it too is toppled in a countercoup. What happens then?"

"John McCain Blasts Fox News Over 'Allahu Akbar' Criticism (VIDEO) Huffington Post, September 3, 2013.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) blasted Fox News' Brian Kilmeade on Tuesday for questioning members of a Syrian opposition groups' use of the phrase "Allahu Akbar" after what Kilmeade said "looks like a fighter jet being shot out of the sky."

“I have a problem helping those people screaming that after a hit,” Kilmeade said.

McCain criticized Kilmeade for his skepticism of the phrase, which means "God is greater" or "God is the greatest" in Arabic.

“Would you have a problem with an American person saying ‘Thank God? Thank God?'" McCain said. “That’s what they're saying. Come on! Of course they're Muslims, but they're moderates and I guarantee you they are moderates.”

McCain said on NBC's "Today" show he would support President Barack Obama's request for action, but didn't agree with the president that any military force should "be designed to be limited in duration and scope." McCain said he's hoping for resolution of intervention that includes authority to degrade Syria's air defenses."...

Solar panels impede firefighters from extinguishing 11 alarm NJ warehouse blaze, danger of electrocution from solar panels forced firefighters to fight blaze from a distance

.
9/2/13, “Solar Panels Growing Hazard for Firefighters,” nbcphiladelphia.com, by Vince Lattanzi

“Concerns over electrocution and a lack of roof access hampered firefighting efforts at Dietz & Watson blaze.”

“Firefighters battling the massive 11-alarm blaze at the Dietz & Watson distribution center in South Jersey faced an unlikely foe during the fight — solar panels.

A solar array with more than 7,000 photovoltaic panels lined the roof of the nearly 300,000 square-foot refrigeration facility which served as a temporary storage center for the company’s deli meats and cheeses. But the panels, while environmentally sustainable and cost-saving, may have led to the complete destruction of the warehouse.

Fighting the fire under bright blue skies Sunday, Delanco Fire Chief Ron Holt was forced to keep firefighters from attacking the blaze from the roof because of electrocution concerns.

“With all that power and energy up there, I can’t jeopardize a guy’s life for that,” said Holt. Those electrocution fears combined with concerns of a collapse forced firefighters to simply spray the building with water and foam from afar.

Ken Willette from the National Fire Protection Association, a nonprofit that develops standards for firefighting, says electrocution is one of the hazards firefighters are increasingly facing fighting blazes at structures where solar panels are deployed.

“Those panels, as long as there’s any kind of light present, whether it’s daylight or it’s electronic lamp light, will generate electricity,” he said.

A 2011 study from the Underwriters Laboratory found solar panels, being individual energy producers, could not be easily de-energized from a single point like other electric sources. Researchers recommended throwing a tarp over the panels to block light, but only if crews could safely get to the area.

“Very often they’re not wired like your home, where you have a master breaker. Even if you turn the breaker off, the panels still generate electricity and you need to cover them and prevent any light from getting into them,” Willette said.

Flooding a roof with solar panels also presents access issues that can stop firefighters from making ventilation holes used to extinguish the fire.

Willette says the issues force firefighters to take a defensive approach to fighting the flames by staying away from the building – rather than going inside and attacking the fire source.

“It definitely impedes the firefighting operation and any time you impede firefighting operation, you slow down suppression efforts,” he said.

From 2010 through 2012, photovoltaic solar panel installations have jumped nearly 300-percent, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). Forecasts show the trend will continue to increase sharply through 2017.

The SEIA also says New Jersey has the second highest solar capacity in the United States.
With the continued growth of solar panels and other alternative energies, Willette says code officials, builders and developers need to work with local fire departments to ensure installations are designed with firefighting in mind.

“The new paradigm is firefighters might encounter building systems they have little or no knowledge of,” Willette said. “It used to be homes and commercial buildings had roofs and walls and heating and ventilation systems that the fire service was used to dealing with…modern technology, both in building construction and these other alternative energy systems, have changed that.””

9/3/13, “11-Alarm Fire Guts Dietz & Watson Warehouse,” nbcphiladelphia.com, by Kelly Bayliss, Danielle Johnson and Dan Stamm

“Fear of electrocution, collapse forced fire chief to pull back crews.”

“It took more than 24 hours to bring a massive fire at a Dietz & Watson storage plant in Delanco, N.J. under control. Company officials say the fire shouldn’t affect costs at the deli counter.  A massive fire that destroyed a South Jersey food warehouse has finally been contained, more than a day after it broke out.

The fire broke out at the Dietz & Watson cold storage facility on Cooperstown Road in Delanco, Burlington County, N.J. around 1:30 p.m. Sunday and caused the roof, lined with thousands of solar panels, to collapse within hours. Thick, black smoke could be seen billowing from the facility miles away.

“It’s just an intense fire,” said Delanco Fire Chief Ron Holt. “It’s going to take some time, and we don’t know what it’s going to do.”

By Monday morning, the blaze continued to burn as water issues, the threat of electrocution and other factors hindered firefighting efforts. Crews began to arrive before 9 a.m. While fire officials were finally able to contain the blaze early Monday evening, they also say it will likely continue to smolder for the next few days.

More than 200 firefighters from Burlington, Mercer, Gloucester, Camden and Atlantic Counties were brought to the distribution center which is about 300,000 square feet — roughly the size of five football fields.

SOLAR PANELS POSE HAZARD

Firefighters had to pull back at some points because the fully-charged solar panels posed the risk of electrocution.

“With all that power and energy up there, I can’t jeopardize a guy’s life for that,” said Holt.
Officials say the fire was focused between the trusses and solar panels on the roof. There have been two explosions so far and at least one wall collapsed.

In 2010, the company installed more than 7,000 solar power modules, which officials claimed would reduce the facility’s energy use by nearly 20 percent. Buildings with solar power systems “can present a variety of significant hazards” for firefighters including poor air quality and electrocution, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

The Burlington County hazmat team was called to the scene to test the air quality and concluded that there is no hazard at this time. However, residents received a reverse 911 message from the Beverly and Edgewater Park Joint Office of Emergency Management which warned them to stay inside their homes, close their windows and avoid breathing in the smoke.

“Unless you’re standing right there and breathing, it’s dissipating before it hits ground,” said Chief Holt. “That’s why we called the health department and hazmat team… (If they say close your window) that’s their expertise, that’s what I go with.”
No residents were evacuated.

Around 5 p.m. Sunday, fire officials were concerned that the water and foam used to fight the blaze would cause the roof to collapse and called all firefighters out of the building as a precaution.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries including Chief Holt who broke his foot.
“If the building collapses, it collapses…it can be replaced. I’m not sending a man in to lose a life,” said Holt.

DRAINING THE PUMPS

Trucked-in water is being dumped into large temporary pools, which are then connected to hoses and sent spraying on the building.

The Camden Fire Boat crew also responded to the scene to help stretch a water pipeline from the Rancocas Creek.

New Jersey American Water asked customers in Edgewater Park, Beverley, and Delanco to limit their water usage as crews battle the blaze.

“Due to the large volumes of water being used by firefighters to tackle the six-alarm blaze, we ask that customers restrict their home water usage until such time as the fire is successfully brought under control. Additionally, you may experience periods of low pressure as we try to direct as much water to the firefighting efforts as possible,” according to Communications Director Peter Eschbach.

“That’s major because (without water) you are not putting the fire out,” said Holt.

ONLY MINOR INJURIES

The Delanco Riverside Bridge was closed around 7 p.m. Officials did not indicate when it would reopen.

Sandy Iwanicki, who lives near the warehouse, said she initially thought a plane had crashed. “It looked to me like the kind of scene you would see if a plane crashed the black smoke was immense it was amazing,” said Iwanicki.

Dietz & Watson officials released a statement on their website shortly after the blaze....

Dietz & Watson employs more than 130 workers at the facility….

Officials say the facility was not operating Sunday. Two security guards were working outside the building. The company, founded in 1939, opened the center in 2007. It is their main distribution center. They also have processing facilities in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Corfu, New York.

The cause of the fire likely won’t be known until the blaze is extinguished and investigators can get inside.” via caller to Red Eye Radio

NY Times only known acknowledgment of the existence Mark Levin's new book is on its page of best seller lists

.
9/1/13, "Why are major media outlets ignoring bestselling writer Mark R. Levin?" NY Post, opinion, by Kyle Smith

"To read the book reviews in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post or The Boston Globe, you might be unaware of the existence of the work of Mark Levin.

Unless you skip to the page with the bestseller lists.

Levin’s new book “The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic,” last week hit No. 1 on all three New York Times bestseller lists for which it qualified — hardcover nonfiction, e-book nonfiction and the combination of the two. Yet the paper, like the others mentioned and their counterparts on the magazine rack, continues to ignore Levin, whose book signing at Book Revue in Huntington, Long Island led to huge lines on Aug. 17.

So, who is this man of mystery considered unfit for mention despite selling millions of books?
Levin is one of the most successful nonfiction writers working and the host of a popular Tea Party-friendly conservative talk radio program that airs nationwide, weekdays at 6 p.m. on WABC here in New York. It claims 5 million listeners.

Levin is a polemicist. On the radio show, he comes across as Rush Limbaugh with a law degree. He calls for the impeachment of “Barack Milhous Nobama,” denouncing “French Republicans” (they give up too easily, and possibly eat fancy cheeses) and declares, in response to a threat to shut him down that, he said, came from a Republican congressman he wouldn’t identify, “I’m not going to put up with fascism on my watch.”

In a typical broadcast, he’ll start with the mellow tone of voice of a soporific late-night jazz deejay, then build into a full-on shout about, say, the perfidy of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for accepting an expansion of Medicaid in his state: “Screw Chris Christie!” he screamed last March.

Actually, there’s a bipartisan aspect to ”The Mark Levin Show.” If you like the sound of Republicans being provided with new bodily apertures without anesthesia, you can expect plenty to delight you.

Levin once said, “Who the hell died and made Karl Rove queen for the day?” Of John Boehner, “Get the hell off the stage, Boehner, you’re a screwup!” Of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program, co-hosted by Republican Joe Scarborough, he said, “This is a program that has as its mission the destruction of conservatism.” He called John McCain “John McLame,” slammed Ann Coulter for being too nice to Mitt Romney and thwocked Glenn Beck for “acting like a clown” and “dividing us.”

His books carry a different tone: Here Levin is a bit more the professor than the bomb-thrower.
Levin’s new one, which is informed by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and the Federalist papers — a favorite phrase, “soft tyranny,” comes straight from Alexis de Tocqueville — isn’t just a collection of radio-ready zingers.

It’s thoroughly reasoned and ably backed up with quotations such as this one (from Jefferson): “It was by the sober sense of our citizens that we were safely and steadily conducted from monarchy to republicanism, and is by the same agency alone we can be kept from falling back.”

“The Liberty Amendments” are 11 theoretical new constitutional amendments designed to re-emphasize a healthy suspicion of centralized authority. Levin suggests term limits of 12 years for senators and members of Congress, a balanced-budget amendment, term limits for Supreme Court justices, a voter-ID amendment and a sunset provision for federal agencies to automatically expire after three years unless renewed.

Some of his ideas might command bipartisan support (now might be a particularly good time to renew the term-limits fight, with Congress polling at about the same approval rating as Lyme disease), but given that effectively two-thirds of Congress and three-quarters of states would have to approve any constitutional updates, most of the Levin amendments stand almost no chance of being passed. Especially the wittiest one: moving tax day to the day before Election Day.

That doesn’t mean the proposals are unworthy of discussion.

The likes of the Times may prefer to ignore Levin as a fringe figure, but that isn’t likely if he’s at the top of the bestseller list. His liberal equivalent, Michael Moore, enjoys saturation coverage in every paper and magazine every time he has a new product to promote.

Levin is speaking for millions when he says that DC is guilty of overreach, of stretching the Constitution’s boundaries until it becomes meaningless, and of sending us the bill.

Levin taps into the disgust with a system that isn’t able to pass budgets on time, consistently spends far more than it takes in and is beholden to lobbyists gaming the system who Obama falsely said would be unwelcome in his administration.

It isn’t just tinfoil-hat birthers who mistrust ObamaCare, which recently hit a disapproval rating of 54% and was seemingly designed to embody the Levin view of the government as capricious, unfair and whiplashed by unintended (but predictable) consequences such as companies cutting back workers to 29-hour weeks.

Levin reader-listeners feel left out of the national debate, and mostly the national media has responded by...trying to pretend he doesn’t exist."

40,000 longshoremen quit AFL-CIO citing ObamaCare among main grievances, private sector union membership falls to all time low

.
9/2/13, "Citing Obamacare, 40,000 Longshoremen Quit the AFL-CIO," Breitbart, Huston

"In what is being reported as a surprise move, the 40,000 members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) announced that they have formally ended their association with the AFL-CIO, one of the nation's largest private sector unions. The Longshoremen cited Obamacare and immigration reform as two important causes of their disaffiliation.

In an August 29 letter to AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, ILWU President Robert McEllrath cited quite a list of grievances as reasons for the disillusion of their affiliation, but prominent among them was the AFL-CIO's support of Obamacare.

"We feel the Federation has done a great disservice to the labor movement and all working people by going along to get along," McEllrath wrote in the letter to Trumka.

The ILWU President made it clear they are for a single-payer, nationalized healthcare policy and are upset with the AFL-CIO for going along with Obama on the confiscatory tax on their "Cadillac" healthcare plan.

The Longshoreman leader said, "President Obama ran on a platform that he would not tax medical plans and at the 2009 AFL-CIO Convention, you stated that labor would not stand for a tax on our benefits." But, regardless of that promise, the President has pushed for just such a tax and Trumka and the AFL-CIO bowed to political pressure lining up behind Obama's tax on those plans.

McEllrath also went on to say that they support stronger immigration reform than the AFL-CIO is supporting.

One ILWU committeeman was even harsher on both the AFL-CIO and the President. ILWU Coast Committeeman Leal Sundet criticized the AFL-CIO telling LaborNotes.com that Trumka was marching "in lockstep" with Obama both on the "Cadillac healthcare tax" as well as immigration.
Sundet slammed Obama's immigration plan saying it is "designed to give [only] highly-paid workers a real path to citizenship."

Taliban attacks US base in Afghanistan, main supply road closes

"A group of suicide bombers attacked a US base near the border with Pakistan on Monday morning, leading to multiple explosions, a gunfight and the closure of a key road used by NATO supply trucks, officials said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the strike in the Torkham area. In a statement, NATO confirmed "a series of explosions" in the area but said none of its personnel were killed. The military alliance does not release information on any of its troops who may have been wounded.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province, said several suicide bombers staged the attack, and that Afghan and US forces have been exchanging gunfire with the militants. He said NATO helicopters were flying over the base.

The highway between Jalalabad city and Torkham, an important route for NATO supply trucks, has been closed, Abdulzai said."...
