NY Times editorial says Obama must create new taxes, carbon tax, VAT tax, financial transaction tax, says last election was mandate to drain private sector for massive gov. programs, work programs, no spending cuts. NY Times was bailed out by Mexican billionaire so has no money worries

.
12/29/12, "Why the Economy Needs Tax Reform," NY Times editorial

"The main problem is that the current tax code is incapable of raising the revenue needed to pay for the goods and services of government. Over the last four years, federal revenue as a share of the economy has fallen to its lowest level in nearly 60 years, a result of the recession, the weak recovery and a decade’s worth of serial tax cuts. Even with deep spending cuts, the chronic revenue shortfall is expected to continue, swelling the federal debt — unless taxes go up. To stabilize the debt over the next 10 years while financing more investment would require

at least $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion in new revenue

above what could be raised by letting the top income tax rate revert to its pre-Bush-era level of 39.6 percent.

A logical way to help raise the additional needed revenue would be to tax capital gains at the same rates as ordinary income. Capital gains on assets held for more than a year before selling are taxed at about the lowest rate in the code, currently 15 percent and expected to rise to 20 percent in 2013. That is an indefensible giveaway to the richest Americans. Research shows that the tax breaks do not add to economic growth but do contribute to inequality. Currently, the top 1 percent of taxpayers receive more than 70 percent of all capital gains, while the bottom 80 percent receive only 6 percent....

Mr. Obama would be wise to instruct the Treasury Department to start work on tax reform now, exploring carbon taxes, both to raise revenue and to protect the environment; a value-added tax, coupled with provisions to protect lower-income taxpayers from higher prices, to tax consumption and encourage saving; and a financial transactions tax, to ensure that the financial sector, whose profits have substantially outpaced those of nonfinancial corporations, pay a fair share.

Not all of the proposed new taxes would gain support, but all deserve to be part of the debate. Controlling the terms of that debate, and then advancing from debate to action, could well be the toughest challenge of Mr. Obama’s second term and, if met,

Obama knows GOP no longer exists so announces he won't engage in 'debt ceiling' talks. 14th amendment, sec. 4 allows. Thanks to the Bush crowd for destroying the GOP

.
The GOP should end this insult and dissolve into the democrat party. They even run fake presidential candidates. The debt ceiling is just
a charade to hide the real issue which is that Obama hasn't passed a budget in over three years.

1/1/13, "Obama: No more debt ceiling," Human Events, Neil McCabe

"“One last point I want to make,” said the president flanked by Vice-President Joseph R. Biden Jr., whose Capitol Hill summitry closed the deal on a “fiscal cliff” compromise. “I will negotiate over many things, I will not have another debate with this Congress over whether or not they should pay the bills, they have already racked up through the laws they have passed.

This is a critical pivot for the president, who previously dismissed the idea floated among liberals that Section 4 of the 14th Amendment, one of the three amendments passed at the end of the Civil War, authorizes the executive to borrow the funds to make good federal debt payments.

It reads:

"The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned"

Obama framed his assumption of the authority to borrow funds, regardless of a statutory debt ceiling, in the context of the upcoming fight to raise it—a fight Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R.-S.C.) called “Round 2” because the senator said Republicans had been beaten in the negotiations to avoid the “fiscal cliff” or “Round 1.”

The president was direct. Either Congress raises the debt ceiling or he will go ahead and borrow the money to pay the bills on his own in order to avoid damage to the U.S. and world economies.

Let me repeat, you can’t not pay bills that we have already incurred,” he said.

If Congress refuses to the United States government the ability to pay these bills on-time, the consequences for the entire global economy would be catastrophic—far worse than the impact of a fiscal cliff,” he said.

“People will remember back in 2011, the last time this course of action was threatened, our entire recovery was put at risk,” he said.

We can’t go down that path again.”"

Obama budget defeated 97-0 in the Senate, May 2011:

5/30/11, "Washington is Broken, and Needs Leadership. Where is President Obama?" Senator Ron Johnson, RedState.com

"Last week, President Obama’s FY 2012 Budget was defeated in the Senate by a vote of 0-97. Let me repeat that, ZERO to 97. The President’s budget that was unveiled as THE solution to our long-term fiscal problems did not receive a single vote in the United States Senate.

This is a stunning indictment of the President’s lack of leadership and seriousness. I don’t know how many thousands of man-hours that over four inch thick, 2400-page budget document took to create, but it was a total waste of time and resources. That is a very sad fact. Instead of acknowledging this failure, the Administration and members of the President’s party have been viciously demagoguing the only other budget plans offered, and engaging in

a concerted effort to scare the American public

and financial markets over the debt ceiling limit."...

Commenter suggests to GOP, next time don't initiate negotiations before asked to...or with yourself...which is what led to this outcome. Unless of course the GOP feels it's on the same side as Obama, then fine

.
1/1/13, "Conservatives being Played for Fools," RedState.com, mtmnd diary

commenter Checkmate 2012 says:

"Conservatives are fools for trying to be the saviors of the cliff while letting the Dem majority sit on the sidelines and ridicule Reps. The prez and Reid should have been forced to fix the cliff with legislation, not just state they'd veto or not even take a vote on anything the House passes. Today, the Senate said they won't take up an amended bill from the House if it happens that way. Who cares what they say; just do what's right and let Reid sit on a bill and take the heat.
+
Boehner let them off the hook just after the election with offering revenues before the talks even started! It was a monumental mistake and led us to today. He didn't have to negotiate a thing, just say the Senate has HR 8 that the House passed last Aug and will respond to that once the Senate passes or amends and sends it back.
+
Now we're in a worse situation now that McConnell took up the baton as the savior with Biden and put Senate Reps. at risk for raising tax rates and putting pressure on the House Reps.! Where the hell are Reid and Obama? On the majority side with no fingerprints on this mess, ready to pounce on blaming the Reps!

Note to Republicans: don't initiate negotiations before asked to or with yourself, and don't initiate talks since you are the minority

Let the president lead and Reid pass a bill before stating your position."

Ed. note: This whole thing was a charade. Obama and the GOP are on the same side. They just put on a show because Boehner likes being on TV. Obama hasn't submitted a budget in over 3 years. The GOP is fine with that.

Reports say DSK rape accuser illegal alien got at least $5 million settlement

.
12/31/12, "DebbieSchlussel.com 2012 Winner of the Year: Guess Who," DebbieSchlussel.com

"On December 10th, the Muslim alien from Guinea, who committed immigration fraud to get a green card and then committed more fraud to shake down and take down the International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director, walked out of a Bronx, New York courtroom with a reported $6 million settlement from French billionaire and former IMF-chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, after lying about an alleged rape. It’s probably the most expensive “Lewinsky” ever.

But, far worse, it sends a huge message to the rest of the world that immigration fraud by Muslim aliens is not only rewarded in America, but then you can entrap a billionaire and walk out a rich woman who never has to work again. Only in America. And, yet, they claim the movie “Pretty Woman” is fiction (except that in this case, it would be titled “Hideous Woman,” and no opera-going was involved, but same difference). And Diallo, the phony who claimed to be a devout Muslim who donned a headscarf, never ever was seen in an actual headscarf before.

But after walking out of court a newly rich chick, the smiling Diallo donned a leopard-print hijab, a symbol of solidarity with the Muslim let’s-screw-America-and-the-West mentality of the “Religion of Peace. And religion of $6 million BJs. She had help in all of this from Bronx County Judge Douglas McKeon, who promised her “a fair shake” and gave her far more than that in helping pressure the parties to this absurd settlement. He said, “I’ve developed a great affection for all of you, and have gotten to know Ms. Diallo through the time that I spent with her.” Yup, sounds like a fair and impartial judge to me . . . NOT.

And she had help from federal authorities, who refuse to prosecute Diallo for immigration fraud and strip her of all rights to be in the U.S., despite the fact that she admitted to lying to U.S. authorities in writing about being gang-raped by fellow Muslims and falsely claiming to be the victim of female genital mutilation in Guinea, her sole claims to asylum here in the States. The feds also refused to prosecute Diallo, despite the fact that wiretaps of conversations with her drug dealer boyfriend–an illegal alien in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention–and checks of her bank account records showed that she was illegally money-laundering over $100,000 for the drug dealer illegal alien. And from New York authorities, who refused to prosecute Diallo, after those same phone wiretaps recorded Diallo telling her boyfriend that she wasn’t raped but that she set the whole thing up to shake DSK down. 12/11/12, "Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn settles with hotel maid," AFP

"Prior to the hearing, Mr Strauss-Kahn's lawyers had dismissed as "dramatically inaccurate" a report in France's Le Monde newspaper that Ms Diallo would be paid $6 million.

But former prosecutor Matthew Galluzzo said the figure was plausible and predicted a sum of around $5 million.

Pre-trial settlements are common in US civil suits as a way to avoid a costly jury trial. A settlement is not an admission of guilt and it allows the accused to avoid having to give their version of events."...

Republicans Deserved to Lose-Thomas Sowell

.
1/1/13, "Republicans Deserved to Lose," Thomas Sowell, National Review

"My choice for the prediction of the year award goes to Bret Stephens of the Wall Street Journal for his column of January 24, 2012, titled: “The GOP Deserves to Lose.”

Despite reciting a litany of reasons why President Obama deserved to be booted out of the White House, Stephens said, “Let’s just say right now what voters will be saying in November, once Barack Obama has been re-elected: Republicans deserve to lose.”

To me, the Republican establishment is the eighth wonder of the world. How they can keep repeating the same mistakes for decades on end is beyond my ability to explain.

Bret Stephens said, back at the beginning of 2012, that Mitt Romney was one of the “hollow men,” and that voters “usually prefer the man who stands for something.”

Yet this is not just about Mitt Romney. He is only the latest in a long series of presidential candidates backed by a Republican establishment that seems convinced that ad hoc “moderation” is where it’s at — no matter how many of their ad hoc moderates get beaten by even vulnerable, unknown, or discredited Democrats....

It is not just Republican presidential candidates who cannot be bothered to articulate a coherent argument, instead of ad hoc talking points. Have you yet heard House Speaker John Boehner take the time to spell out why Barack Obama’s argument for taxing “millionaires and billionaires” is wrong?

It is not a complicated argument. Moreover, it is an argument that has been articulated many times in plain English by conservative talk-show hosts and by others in print. It has nothing to do with being worried about the fate of millionaires or billionaires, who can undoubtedly take care of themselves.

What we all should be worried about are high tax rates driving American investments overseas, when there are millions of Americans who could use the jobs that those investments would create at home.

Yet Obama has been allowed to get away with the emotional argument that the rich can easily afford to pay more, as if that is the issue. But it will be the issue if no one says otherwise.

One of the recent sad reminders of the Republicans’ tendency to leave even lies and smears unanswered was a television replay of an old interview with the late Judge Robert Bork, whose nomination to the Supreme Court was destroyed by character assassination.

Judge Bork said that he was advised not to answer Ted Kennedy’s wild accusations because those false accusations would discredit themselves. That supposedly sophisticated advice cost the country one of the great legal minds of our time — and left us with a wavering Anthony Kennedy in his place on the Supreme Court.

Some people may take solace from the fact that there are some articulate Republicans like Marco Rubio who may come forward in 2016. But with Iran going nuclear and North Korea developing missiles that can hit California, it may be too late by then." via Free Republic

Missing Breitbart. Breibart was one of few reasons any Republican had a ghost of a chance, especially one, Romney, we now find loathed the whole idea of running for president

.
1/1/13, "Missing Breitbart," Tom Blumer, PJMedia

"I could not help but wonder whether November’s presidential election might have turned out differently if Andrew had not died on March 1....

Breitbart is one of the main reasons why a Republican candidate, and especially one who we have since learned really didn’t want to run for the office, even had a ghost of a chance against Obama....

What Breitbart understood, and what all too many establishment Republicans and even conservatives don’t, is that there is no accommodating the left, and there is no hope of receiving fair treatment

from the left-dominated establishment press.

The left is hellbent on fundamentally transforming the country into a socialist utopia which has never succeeded anywhere it has been tried, and the press is determined to help them do that. Folks, no matter what you do, they’re going to hate you

(and hate is the right word).

So you might as well do the right thing and follow your beliefs and principles (John “Plan B” Boehner, please note)....

Despite all the establishment press hype about Barack Obama’s “convincing” victory, the fact remains that he won with a smaller percentage of the popular vote (50.6%) than every successful incumbent in the past century except three, all Democrats who failed to achieve popular vote majorities: Bill Clinton in 1996, the second time he won with only a minority of the popular vote; Harry Truman in 1948 in a four-way race; and Woodrow Wilson in 1916.

Fewer than 200,000 switched votes in four battleground states

would have changed November’s outcome

to a Romney win....

This country now has a government headed by the most radical president in U.S. history, one with the worst economic record since Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal extended the Great Depression by eight years. He nevertheless won reelection largely because his opponent conceded too much ground

and wouldn’t fight hard enough for what remained.

Barack Obama and the left believe they have only just begun. Sensible, Constitution-anchored conservatives need to start acting as an army of Breitbarts." ....via Lucianne
