"The U.S. goal in Afghanistan "is not to build a country in America’s image, or to eradicate every vestige of the Taliban," President Obama told Americans Tuesday night in a prime-time address from Bagram Air Base in Kabul.

Hours later, Taliban fighters -- reportedly disguised in burqas -- attacked a compound housing foreign contractors in Kabul, killing at least seven people. The Taliban said the attack was a response to Obama's surprise visit.

This was the second major attack in Kabul in less than three weeks, and it demonstrates the Taliban's continued ability to strike in the heavily guarded capital even at a time of heightened security because of President Obama's visit, the Associated Press reported....

"In coordination with the Afghan government, my administration has been in direct discussions with the Taliban," he (Obama) said. "We’ve made it clear that they can be a part of this future if they break with al Qaeda, renounce violence and abide by Afghan laws." He said "many members of the Taliban" are interested in reconciliation.

But Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid disputed the president's comment about reconciliation: Wednesday's attack in Kabul "was a message to Obama that those are not real Afghans that are signing documents about this country," Mujahid said. "The real Afghan nation are those people that are not letting foreign invaders stay in this country or disrespect the dignity of our country.""...via Lucianne

Ed. note: Will the media say the blood of the dead is on Obama's hands?
